Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: October 2010
Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months. And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?
This post features 45 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.
Please notice:
- all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
- you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?
So what wallpapers have we received for October 2010?

Time Intensity
"I was sorting out all my brushes in Photoshop and started playing around with loads of variations of brush strokes that I actually forgot I had. I was trying to create a cloudy hole and have a fetish with time and time traveling at the moment and it turned out to be something in between a black hole and some sort of disrupted void in the space time continuum. I liked it that much afterwards I thought I’d use it for my own desktop and then thought I’d share it on smashingmag :)" Designed by Rik Hopkinson from UK.

September 30th, 2010 2:23 amHi, I come here to get my monthly desktop, regularly! And I always find something I love! But, this month, I’m not so sure… :( Do all October desktop backgrounds have to be about Halloween?! Here in India, we don’t celebrate Halloween all that much. In fact, almost no one does!! And all I can find is one very dank and dreary picture of Gandhi… the message on it is nice, but not what I was looking for. Something bright, even something related to autumn…but bright….would have been nice…anyway, I guess I’ll just have to wait till next month to see something I like.
Keep up the good work at smashing magazine, guys! I really mean that…just feeling a little let down this time around.
Vitaly Friedman
September 30th, 2010 2:28 amActually, many wallpapers are not related to Halloween at all, especially the ones on the top of the page.

September 30th, 2010 9:51 amDear, I don’t think you have any idea about creativity. Prove me wrong and let’s see if you can create something like expectation for next month.

October 1st, 2010 10:34 amI think there is only half of the wallpapers about Halloween. Mine (Above The Clouds) is quite bright I think, and no ghost or witch in it, just a cute giraffe :).
Is Smashing Magazine famous in India?

September 30th, 2010 3:33 amHey, great collection!
I think it would be cool if you could subscribe to “Smashing Calendar Channel” via Google homepage, so it would change automatically at the beginning of the month, maybe every artist would have his own channel or something.
Just a thought

September 30th, 2010 3:36 amNot going to lie, the last couple months I have been bummer because it seemed the selection was not amazing, but October has come through. Great job this month guys!

September 30th, 2010 4:11 amLove Olivia’s Hibernating designs, obviously got a foot fetish this month. Also love Montana Moon and Heavy Equipment = powerful photographs!

September 30th, 2010 4:18 amVery low level this time d0des :/
I really don’t understand Hibernating 1 and Hibernating 2. There is nothing creative. Just regural photos.

September 30th, 2010 4:38 amThank you for the great wallpapers. My favourite is Any Browser, though others are good as well. What about urging designers to create wallpapers for netbooks as well? 1024×600 for instance. That would be great.

September 30th, 2010 4:38 amGreat selection as always. Bummed my calender wasn’t featured but will send one in till it is featured!!

September 30th, 2010 5:08 amHi,
Does anyone know where I can find a tutorial to create a calendar, with days showing in one line, at the bottom of the image (like, for example, on The Colours of October)?
Thanks in advance,

September 30th, 2010 5:25 amThank you so much for featuring my work at the very tippy top of your page! :)
The other designers were also very creative this month and I can’t pick a favorite!
Chris S
September 30th, 2010 5:45 amWhy does “Hibernating” scare me a little… (dead body?) Maybe that’s a good thing considering it’s the month of October? A picture of just feet in black and white screams Morge. All you need is a tag on the toe… I hope I don’t offend the designer. Good concept though.

September 30th, 2010 6:04 amOlivia Bell’s wallpaper is amazing thumbs up for a brilliant design!

September 30th, 2010 6:25 amHi everyone!!!

September 30th, 2010 6:28 amWhy is there a full-page Scion ad in the background behind the post when I click the back button? It’s kind of obnoxious. Anyway, nice wallpapers.

September 30th, 2010 6:52 amOnly the Pumpkin Spice Spookster wallpaper is available in 1600×900, but that’s not the one I wanted. Oh well.

September 30th, 2010 7:14 amNice selection, although I’m curious about the guidelines. I submitted for October and it’s not posted here. Just curious – I spent a lot of time selecting and preparing all the different sizes, etc. I’m not motivated to do all that again…
Artur
September 30th, 2010 7:15 amI like most “Childish” – this is a cool message and:
“The words I’ve never said to you” – I like the photo and the possibility to think about never said words

September 30th, 2010 8:06 amHey Smashing Mag, thanks so much for posting my wallpaper! And great work by all the other designers as well.

September 30th, 2010 8:13 amWhile all of these come from clearly talented artists, I’m getting kind of tired of the toddler-centric art work. How about something more adult focused. I will often apply these wallpapers to work computers and if half my choices are kiddie art, I’m left searching elsewhere.
Lexi
September 30th, 2010 8:23 amThanks!

September 30th, 2010 8:29 amAll wonderful, as always … but my favorite this month is Violeta Dabija’s Halloween. It’s beautiful and truly “haunting” … with such glowing, jewel-like colors. Lovely and just a little spooky.

September 30th, 2010 12:01 pmThis might be my favorite collection EVER! I was struck immediately by Turning Leaves, and it immediately went straight to my desktop. However, at some point I might have to swap for Childish. I wish Creepy Ice Cream came as a t-shirt. :-) Great job, everybody!

September 30th, 2010 4:11 pmThank you for including me in this month’s wonderful collection! Thank you, beatrix! I did think of going more “halloween” but decided on a more subtle approach. Ok, it wasn’t that subtle ;) “The Colors of October” is my fave, beautiful simplicity. Thank you again!

October 6th, 2010 12:00 pmHi Guys!
You have to follow this link, everything is explained (by Smashing Magazine its self):
http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/03/19/desktop-wallpaper-calendar-join-in/
Smashing Magazine receives a lot of wallpapers each month so there is a selection. If you’re selected, you’ll be published with all of us :)
Be patient and have fun! :)

September 30th, 2010 4:14 pmI thought there were MANY lovely choices this month, though a bit Hallows/Autumn heavy, even though it does apply to me, and even though Hallowe’en is my fave day of the year! :D I looked at October 2009′s picks yesterday, and noted that it was also Halloween/Autumn heavy last year.
I dl’d to use (mostly w/cals.): Liquify, Colours of Oct, 10/10 (because it is 10/10!), Intensity, Pumpkin Spice Spookster, Smoked (esp the #s, though she seemed a bit too blurry), Harvest Sunset (love sunflowers), Ghostober was cute as were Halloween1, Happy Halloween, TrickOrTreat, Halloween, JackOcalendar. Purple fall is right on-trend (and my fave color), and Childish was nicely done, along with OctoberCalender (3d) , and DeadNight (nice texture!). Even though just listing these names does validate that the collection was Hallows/kid-friendly, many in the online world will be celebrating some sort of autumnal/fall/harvest-y/Hallows time, and there were others that were also very specific to their country.
I also liked Benoit’s, Matteo’s, Rosana’s, Respect the Artist, October Moon, and my nephew will like MonthRocks!

September 30th, 2010 9:03 pmCan any one help me saying, how to submit the design?
I submitting, But my I don’t see my design here :(
Kim
October 1st, 2010 7:42 amHello Jaffer … I can try and help you walk through the process. I have only submitted two so far, so I am no expert.
I have the correct file size set up, design in one size and create other sizes.
The thing to watch out for … you must follow the format of naming convention and submitting process TO THE LETTER. I am sure there are lots of emails, and files submitted and they can’t be responsible for renaming, etc. If you have more questions jump over to my blog and send me an email ;) Keep submitting, if you following procedure … it is great practice, it is good for our egos to get chosen but great preparation for life we are NOT.
Keep designing! Cheers Kim

I submitted my design, But i don’t see my design here :(

October 1st, 2010 3:16 pmThey may not have chosen it, for whatever reason…as Kim noted, you might have messed up the naming convention, or the art wasn’t chosen. You may want to publish it yourself on your blog/site/portfolio, and on art sites like deviantArt.com or behance.net

September 30th, 2010 10:06 pmThe Colours of October by Anna-Lena Lewerenz looks awesome , I love it
great job Anna
Marc
September 30th, 2010 10:26 pmI like the fresh breathe and the hibernating wallpaper as well, although the pictures tell completely different stories. On the one hand I like the freshness of cool air and I do like autumn anyway. On the other hand the idea of just staying in bed a little longer than usual while it is still dark outside anyway, is also very tempting.
I like photographs, but very often they are not very useful as a desktop wallpaper. Both pictures are, so it is difficult to decide.
Besides there are some more really cool calendars this month. I also like a dark desktop background. And it is time for Halloween – so like the spooky dead night too and even another one: Gandhi. It is dark, it looks good and it is about a very impressive person. Thanks to all art workers.
By the way: I also like the cowgirl – what is it about these Bell-guys – are you all related to each other? Obviously a very talented family – and the modeling Rosanna makes really beautiful web layouts – check it out!
Olivia Bell
October 3rd, 2010 4:47 amMarc, yes we are related – we are all sisters in fact! :)

October 8th, 2010 1:49 amHi Olivia,

October 1st, 2010 12:01 amNice collection this month. I like the 3d-October wallpapers probably my favorite this month. Its really simple, but represents October and autumn really well with the different shades of green and the fallen leaves.
I also like the smart-crow wallpaper because of the artistic influence.
Thanks.
Masty
October 1st, 2010 12:28 amDiffucult choice this month! I went for the “dead night” on my office computer and mayber “trick or treat ” on my personal computer… Or maybe the “Chillin’ Gnomies”… Not decided yet!

October 1st, 2010 1:11 amNice collection but doesn’t feel like a Smashing magazine collection. The last month collection was way too better.

October 1st, 2010 1:52 amColor of October had a beautiful concept. I liked Mahatma Gandhi wallpaper and Dead Night, since I like simpler designs. And, not to mention Bell sisters’ photography: Breath of fresh air, Cowboy girl and Hibernating.

October 1st, 2010 3:37 amI liked only Martin’s (Latvia) wallpaper, and made it the desktop background on my PC. Frankly speaking, all other wallpapers are not that nice compared to that of the previous months.
Also, surprised for not seeing any Durga Puja (its a 4-day festival, starting from 14 this month) wallpapers. It is one of the most important, widely celebrated Hindu festivals in India, next to Diwali.

October 1st, 2010 3:48 amAwesome, I particularly like “Any Browser”. Good job by all the designers.
Jessica
October 1st, 2010 4:20 amI think most of them are great, but personally as a designer I think wallpapers should consider the icons that most of us have in our desktops. I certainly don’t have too many but when I choose a wallpaper I keep that in mind. Saying that I think the majority of these are very cluttered and work great as simple graphics but not in a context. Anyway I think they look great.

October 1st, 2010 7:25 amI look forward to these collections every month (That’s why I am here on the 1st)!
This month I love Harvest Sunset, Pumpkin Spice Spookster, and Jack O’ Cal.
Wish there more more Halloween themes.

October 1st, 2010 7:48 amI really like how the weekend dates are missing from “October Sentense” but I will be going with one with more of a Halloween theme, so it is down to, one of the “Halloween” posters, the “Happy Halloween” poster or “Jack O Cal”
Keep up the great work everyone, I think this is my one year anniversary of getting my monthly calendar from this site! Thanks!

October 1st, 2010 8:43 amI love how on Windows 7 I don’t have to stick anymore with just one background image. I just take them all and have them change randomly at specified intervals.
That said, could you package the different resolutions into just one file, for next time?
That would be awesome.
