Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: November 2010

Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use a specific wallpaper for a longer period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers for over 12 months. To make them a little more distinctive than the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you happen to be searching for a specific day of the month, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?

This post features 50 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe for November 2010. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.

Please notice:

  • all images can be clicked on and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
  • you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?

So what wallpapers have we received for November 2010?

Update (02.11.2010): You can also download the Windows 7 Wallpapers Pack with all wallpapers featured in this post.

Can someone design a spring one as it is spring in Australia….and maybe next mth a summer one for a Oz???

    Greatly appreciated

    • 108

I was trying to design several that incorporated major nations’ holidays, and both hemispheres (reversed) seasons…but I ended up running out of time [got sick, as did my PC :( ]. It’s a difficult proposition to try and fit a lot of different needs into one wallpaper, and definitely bucks the trend of ‘minimalist’ design, so it won’t please those trendoids…I was going to have Thanksgiving, Diwali, Dia de Muertos and Guy Fawkes (firey, autumnal colors as unifying theme) along with contrast of green (fading from green into harvest) along with some other motifs. Will start soon on Dec….summer vs. winter solstice and various holidaze of lights. Wish me luck!

I would suggest that you could “re-edit” seasons, with changed calendars. For example:
In December winter begins in North Hemisphere, and summer on south, you could reedit the june wallpapers, changing the calendar to december to us on the south hemisphere, doesn´t need to be a new one.
I would not mind having a calendar/wallpaper that was previously released, but matches the calendar and the season I´m currently in.
The season thematic calendars are great, but seems odd to use them here on south hemisphere, since our seasons are opposed to yours.

I’m not a designer, but LOVE design! My faves this month are Flying, Reprieve, November Tree, November Rain, Stereo is Better, La Calaca, Myriad of Stars, and Diwali Greetings. I like a lot of these, though I can’t/won’t use any that feature people. Great work!

That being said, I do think that ones with typos or completely wrong calendars should be instantly disqualified. It does make one question the selection process. I understand getting inundated with 200 calendars, but is it so hard to review the final 50 before the post goes up?

    +3
    • 126

I think it would be mean to disqualify those pictures, I think you should just have someone correct the mistakes.

      +2
      • 127

Or the designer should correct the mistake, or review before submitting, or have someone else review it before they submit. It’s not about being mean. if SM is choosing the best of the ones they received, shouldn’t the best be free of errors?

    Hi people…

Last two months i send my wallpaper, but i received this message:

because of the unexpectedly high number of submissions, our automatic system that processes these submissions reports problems.

Your submission contains errors and therefore can not be considered for the contest.

But please notice that we have changed the rules for the desktop wallpaper submissions.

    Please carefully review rules: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/03/19/desktop-wallpaper-calendar-join-in/
one more time and send us the files in the right resolutions.

Please do not send us your wallpapers multiple times – it makes the processing of your submissions
more difficult and may result in ignoring the wallpapers because of the spamming.

    With warm greetings,

So, i review the rules and cannot find my mistakes… I send the wallpaper in jpg and in right resolutions…

    Please, somebody can help me?

    Thanks…

After hearing so much about them, I went and checked for myself the plagiarism accusations against Sasha Bell.

From what I’ve seen, it looks like she’s quite clearly someone who mooches off others’ work. Maybe a publication as influential as SM should be more careful about who it promotes on it’s website.

Another point, if SM gets about 150 – 200 submissions, couldn’t you add some more variety instead of just putting up the uncannily similar works of the Bell sisters?

I like Calaca for D’d de los Muertos because at least it is more relevant for me since there isn’t a turkey or cornucopia around. P.S. I’m not too fond of the Bells either.

I would thank all the people who made these designs with keen interest and with different themes and ideas, but if it is required to select and suggest one, then i would suggest Diana Samoila’s design.

Though I no longer do any serious graphic arts work, I follow the articles in Smashing magazine. I love the monthly calendar choices. This month I have November Girl on my screen at work. People stop by and comment “where did you find that?”, or “I LOVE your screen background!” I tell them about Smashing magazine and often send the link to calendar choices to people every month, so this is good advertising. If I could have one wish though it would be that the artists remember function. Most people have all of their desktop folders on the left side of their screens – bad place to put the calendar or any part of the design that will obscure the folders.

Best collection as always. But as always, the glitch is – the smashing magazine logo.

you should put it at a predefined place, like a corner or so, and add some transparency to it.

putting it anywhere looks an eyesore in otherwise gorgeous designs.

Even though most of Sasha Bells’ illustration work has been removed from several websites for blatant plagiarism (DeviantArt, PlurkLayouts, Facebook and even your own website), Smashing Magazine still continues to support her by featuring the Bell Sisters, without fail, every single month. For a website with as much influence as you have, it’s really disappointing. As designers, shouldn’t we be discouraging this kind of behaviour? When you receive 200 submissions each month, featuring four wallpapers by the same family is a little excessive – the photography might be popular, but at what cost?

    I really like Expanse.

I’m never one to throw negativity out there and I know I’ll probably be chastised for saying this but I’m so tired of the Bells’ works (yaaaaaawwwwnnn). Sorry girls.

I agree. The Bell sisters make money by selling plagiarised works and it’s a shame to keep supporting them :(

I use the ‘change picture’ / ‘random order’ options on my desktop background. It would be really cool if I could download all of these (for a specific resolution) as a set (one file) that I could drop into a folder.

Bit of a pain having to go through them all one by one ;)

I felt there is an overdose of the bell sisters… If you really get 150-200 wallpapers don’t you think you should be giving others equal opportunity?!

    Nice collection!

But just as an FYI, Movember isn’t just “No Shave Month” for some “weird reason”. It is an organized campaign to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer. The idea is that participants grow a silly moustache (a “mo”) all month which allows them to transform into a walking billboard for the Movember campaign. It’s sure to strike up plenty of spontaneous conversations about how to get involved and where to make donations! It’s fun but also very productive in raising money for the cause!! :)

Hi, thank you for those great wallpapers. Btw, I have created a simple tool that downloads all wallpapers of a specified size so that I don’t have to download them manually. I think this could help some of you too: http://baud.cz/blog/batch-downloading-of-smashing-magazine-desktop-wallpapers

Yeah, I totally agree about the Bell sisters, I think something dodgy’s going on! What I don’t like is the way that she won’t publish critiscism on her website, it doesn’t make it look very legitimate!

Or she’s very talented. Sasha, your work is gorgeous, it’s just not my style of wallpaper. But in terms of the images themselves, I love ‘favourite pair’ and ‘autumn afternoon’!

Another lovely collection, including several evocative photographs, though my faves were the very pretty, water-colory Pink Morning, November Girl Calendar (a little after-Hallows afterglow), the interesting Symbian Morning, the attitude of gratitude (always apropo) in Thanks for Giving, Bon Voyage was pretty but limited size, November Tree, Autumn w/Gecko, and I was hoping there would be ones for world holidays Calaca for El d’a de Muertos and Diwali Greetings, Hendrix Fire and Myriad of Stars were great, Movemeber was funny, Knitting Fall felt comfy and warm, bright and happy for the coming winter, and I liked the concept of Expanse.

Movember in Australia is a charity event. Don’t shave for a month – grow a badass mo, organise parties, raise money/awareness for men’s health issues. In Australia I think it has a bent towards prostate cancer and depression.

    Anyway, just an info note.

Thanks to all for doing these. I like to use the with-calendar versions but always have to look to make sure the calendars start their weeks on the right day (Sunday, for me). I would be confused if I downloaded a Monday-first-day calendar. So difficult to please everyone :)

It’s a fun part of the month to see people’s creativity.

    Thanks again.
