Smashing Book 2 Is Coming: Add Your Name To The Book!

Update:(30.01.2011) The Smashing Book 2, with 2.970 names of our readers, is now available in the Smashing Shop.

Update: (30.01.2011) If you are planning to write an article or review of Smashing Book 2, please feel free to use the Smashing Book 2 Media Kit (.zip, 7 Mb). The kit contains images, illustrations and photos that you might find useful for your article. Also, please don’t forget to tweet the link to the review with the hashtag #smbook2, so we can track it and add it to our list of reviews. Your help is sincerely appreciated. Thank you for your time and your efforts, guys!

We’ve got some exciting news: the printed Smashing Book 2 is coming. We will launch pre-orders in January 2011 and will start shipping the book in February 2011. We are just putting the final touches on the brand new book, and we are confident that it will be a valuable, timeless and affordable book for you, our dear readers, and all designers and developers worldwide.

After much difficulty with the first book, we have learned our lessons: Smashing Book 2 will have a much better stitched binding, a hardcover, more pages and a bit larger in size.

Book cover

Our Readers Deserve Credit

It’s not unusual for authors to dedicate their books to people they care about: loved ones, family or perhaps friends or colleagues. In our case, we would like to dedicate this new book to all of our readers: you. But we don’t want to just do it with a short acknowledgment in the preface. Anyone could do that! We have a slightly better idea.

We would like to print the names of our readers in the book. To do this, we have reserved a double-page on which we will print together all of the names of readers who comment on this article in the shape of the Smashing Magazine logo: ASCII art at its best! If necessary, we will add two more double-pages so that everyone fits.

Leave a Comment and Add Your Name to the Book!

It’s simple: just write a short comment on this post and tell us why you read Smashing Magazine and how we can improve it. You may use your full name or an alias; the length allowed is between 4 and 35 characters. Your name may consist of at most four parts (for example, Patrick Michael Philips or John F. Doe or Alberto de la Cruz). Special characters are allowed. Please note that we will moderate the names, and spammy submissions will not be accepted.

What’s So Different About the New Book?

The Smashing Book 2 will be published in February 2011 and can be pre-ordered at a big discount in January. It will cost $29.90 and will contain 360 pages. It is a real hardbound book, with sewn binding, a bookmark and four-color printing. Just as we did last time, we will pack it well, too.

Delivery times and shipping are different this time. All orders will be shipped via air mail. The shipping cost will be low and will be the same for every customer, no matter where they are located.

As with our first printed book, The Smashing Book 2 is a collaboration of talented and knowledgeable folks, among them Mike Rundle, Christian Heilmann, Francisco Inchauste, Vivien Anayian, Susan Weinschenk, Alexander Charchar, Matt Ward and others. The book will feature exclusive full-page illustrations for each chapter. Here we’ve got something special for you as well, but more on that next time.

Rules and Guidelines

  • How to participate?
Just write a short comment on this post and tell us why you read Smashing Magazine and how we can improve it.
  • How many names can fit onto the two pages?
Of course, it depends on the length of the names. We expect around 6,000 readers will be able to fit onto the two pages.
  • How much time do I have to join in?
The deadline is 26th of November 2010, 11:59 PM CET. We do want to make it to the printer on time after all.
  • Can anyone take part?
Yes, but you’d better hurry: first come, first served.
  • Are there any restrictions on the names?
The length of the person’s name (both first and last) must be between 4 and 35 characters. It may contain at most three empty characters. Please note that we will moderate the names, and spammy submissions will not be accepted.

Extra Goodie: Exclusive SM Book 2 Poster!

To make participation even more enticing, we are giving away 50 exclusive Smashing Book 2 posters to participants. The winners will be picked randomly from among all users who comment on this post.

We are working very hard to make the Smashing Book 2 an extremely valuable and useful resource for all designers and developers. We hope to meet your expectations with the new book. Please stay tuned for updates. And don’t forget to leave the comment.

We love high-quality content and we care about little details. We believe that good content and design are crafts worth sharpening. Located in the lovely city of Freiburg, Germany. Mostly Vitaly (vf), Iris (il), Stephan (sp) and Sven (sl).

Smashing Magazine – and the first book – is always a great source of inspiration. No matter how much experience you might have, you always find something you didn’t know. Btw, I didn’t have any problems with the binding and I liked the small size and the soft cover. Meh.

I was recently asked, in a survey, what 2 design and tech sites I loved most, and Smashing Magazine was my first choice. The combination of learning and inspiration is what keeps it special, I believe. The only improvement suggestion I can make is this: more freebies! :)

This online magazine is as the british say, simply smashing. No other name would be as fit. Each time I’m exercising my mind to learn a new topic or find inspiration, the magazine bizarrely reads my mind and writes a post which seems just for me. The only thing I would suggest for improvement of this new Smashing Magazine book is to resolve the woeful shipping issues that plagued all the readers last time. Thank you!

Have been reading Smashing Magazine after a friend of mine RT’d one of your articles many moons ago. Love the work that you do.

As someone who is more of a programmer than a designer, I rely on your network to help me keep on top of trends and tips in the design world.

    Keep it up!

I read Smashing Magazine ’cause it’s a hub for intelligent discussion about all aspects of design and development on the web. I’ve been making sites for 6 or 7 years but have only produced professional results in the last few years. I owe that the to wealth of resources and the inspiration found, largely, on Smashing Magazine.

Thanks so much guys, I look forward to your second book!

My name is John Rooney. I’m a web designer, so naturally I’m attracted to Smashing’s content. If there were anything I could think of improving about Smashing magazine, I would say: delve further into experimental topics like SVG, CSS3, HTML5 and jQuery plugins for the likes. Instead of just introduction articles, I would suggest more useful, hands-on tutorials regarding these new technologies. Cheers for the new book!

Hmm, I will probably add this one to my collection as well! And it would be even cooler if my name is in there!

The reason why I read Smashing Magazine is because of its mixture of different topics: from running a business to coding. For me, I would like to see a bit more topics on coding ;) Further: keep up the good work. I pay a visit more than once per day.

smashing magazine is the one …
… newsletter i look forward to every time
… twitter account i have favorited most tweets of
… source i usually go to first, when i am looking for inspiration
… place i ordered a book from online last year (i usually buy offline)
… site online, i seriously consider getting in touch with, everytime there is a job opening
… page i keep telling partners and students about, whenever i find out they don’t know it yet

THANK YOU for this seemingly endless source of creativity, inspiration and best practices.

As for suggestions: I’d like to see a bit more content in the web development field — actual coding (PHP, jQuery, SQL but also API integration examples such as FB or Twitter). All in all I wouldn’t mind, if the page keeps the direction as it is though.

p.s.: if the twitter handle is too much, i can do with the name only too ;)

The first book was a very helpful and enjoyable read. I’ll pre-order the second book. As for Smashing Magazine, the online version is a great resource. I would subscribe to the print version if that option were available in the States. Smashing Magazine mixes technology and design which is most helpful in my role as a multi-media project coordinator. The writing style is fun to read, too.

What I like about SmashingMag: your approach to articles. Some articles are not for everybody, but I appreciate the hard work you are doing to put the high quality content together. More articles on Fireworks would be great!

Regarding the SM Book 2: what an excellent idea! I am really excited about the book, especially with the remarkable line-up of writers you’ve got there. Looking forward to Francisco Inchauste’s and Alexander Charchar’s pieces, as I have been reading their blogs for a while.

    Exciting! :-) Nice work, guys!

Many an afternoon has been lost surfing the sites from one of those ‘The best X something’ articles you guys publish. Keep it up and I’ll definitely be adding book 2 to the shelf next to book 1.

I read Smashing Magazine because you have thoughtful and thorough articles about everything web development and design. Most of the articles are easy to read, even if you’re not a web developer. My favorite articles are those on design and typography. I’d like to see some articles on the visual design of games in the future, that would make SM an even more must read for me. I’m really looking forward to the second book, this is a must buy :).

    Why i read smashing magazine:

If i get stuck whilst i’m developing or designing, the first thing that comes in to my head is “ah smashing magazine will know” and nine times out of ten you have an article or a resource to help me out.

    How to improve Smashing Magazine:

Develop a mobile version of your site, you could even make an app. I would love to read your articles and cartoons on the go!

    Hi,
I pre-ordered the first edition of the smashing book and when it arrived I read it within a week. But I like that this book is more than a one-time-reading-book. It’s one of my best “friends” in my bookshelf!
And I love “The Guide to Fantastic Color Usage In Web Design and Usability” … thumbs up!

Is the second edition going to be a “reloaded” version or do you plan to provide new content? That would be perfect, of course!

Btw. love the idea to be a part of the 2nd smashing book! Thanks!

I absolutely love Smashing Magazine! It’s a great resource for broad info on everything design/technology.

There is very little that could be done to improve it, thought I do have a cool suggestion! It’d be neat if your twitter followers could vote on what they want to hear about next. If smashing mag was deciding between two article topics for instance, the twitter followers could tweet @ smashing mag and vote for what they want to read most!

I also think it’d be cool to have maybe a “Celebrity” article contribution every so often. Get well known designers, developers, entrepreneurs, etc. to contribute an article on their expertise.

Keep up the great work, guys!

Smashing Magazine is my first reference point. If something related to web dev is not here it just doesn`t exist.
All I can say, after 2 and half years since I`m a fan, it`s: good job, guys – I don`t have enough words to fully describe how grateful I am…

    Thank you.

    Smashing Magazine:: the web-design pez-dispenser.

The website is clean, clear and simple. Its content is relevant, useful and always interesting. The book (mk2) has me eagerly waiting its release.

The downsides to SM?.. As with most websites, adverts are an eyesore, and this one is no exception. The ads take up more than 30% of the pages’ width in some areas ..
And unfortunately for SM’s readers, we only get one article a day :(

The SM has quality articles, but also has a wonderful, understandable and exciting articles and team. As I would not want a copy of this book for me with my name on it? You are my heroes! If it was something better, invest in a more practical way to find the content here (cataloging / themes).

When I first started as a freelance web developer, the first resource I was told to check out was SM. Two years later I still read this blog following every new post.

What really brings me back here every morning to check if there’s a new post is the high quality of the articles. Its amazing how most of your articles somehow cover all the readers, be it a newbie or an experienced designer.

The Smashing Book 1 has helped me greatly and I cant wait to get my copy of TSB2

Smashing Magazine is my favorite source for web design related news and inspiration… One thing I would like it the ability to subscribe to a specify category of posts — like, have a separate feed for Graphics, Inspiration, Design, and Code.

Keep up the good work and cheers on the new book!

Smashing Magazine has answers to most of my questions related to design, css and all kind of inspiration. Whenever I have a new design project or need inspiration for small design elements i-e buttons, banners etc, I come back to SM. Moreover, daily articles play great help in keeping up with new design/coding techniques and developments.

Smashing Magazine gave me the incentive to work harder, to do better in web developing. I found myself many times reading articles about things that don’t know or want to take up. The way that those articles make you crave for more and want to learn new things, is the best. YOU are the best! Keep Up!!!
