Smashing Book 2 Is Coming: Add Your Name To The Book!
Update:(30.01.2011) The Smashing Book 2, with 2.970 names of our readers, is now available in the Smashing Shop.
Update: (30.01.2011) If you are planning to write an article or review of Smashing Book 2, please feel free to use the Smashing Book 2 Media Kit (.zip, 7 Mb). The kit contains images, illustrations and photos that you might find useful for your article. Also, please don’t forget to tweet the link to the review with the hashtag #smbook2, so we can track it and add it to our list of reviews. Your help is sincerely appreciated. Thank you for your time and your efforts, guys!
We’ve got some exciting news: the printed Smashing Book 2 is coming. We will launch pre-orders in January 2011 and will start shipping the book in February 2011. We are just putting the final touches on the brand new book, and we are confident that it will be a valuable, timeless and affordable book for you, our dear readers, and all designers and developers worldwide.
After much difficulty with the first book, we have learned our lessons: Smashing Book 2 will have a much better stitched binding, a hardcover, more pages and a bit larger in size.
Our Readers Deserve Credit
It’s not unusual for authors to dedicate their books to people they care about: loved ones, family or perhaps friends or colleagues. In our case, we would like to dedicate this new book to all of our readers: you. But we don’t want to just do it with a short acknowledgment in the preface. Anyone could do that! We have a slightly better idea.
We would like to print the names of our readers in the book. To do this, we have reserved a double-page on which we will print together all of the names of readers who comment on this article in the shape of the Smashing Magazine logo: ASCII art at its best! If necessary, we will add two more double-pages so that everyone fits.
Leave a Comment and Add Your Name to the Book!
It’s simple: just write a short comment on this post and tell us why you read Smashing Magazine and how we can improve it. You may use your full name or an alias; the length allowed is between 4 and 35 characters. Your name may consist of at most four parts (for example, Patrick Michael Philips or John F. Doe or Alberto de la Cruz). Special characters are allowed. Please note that we will moderate the names, and spammy submissions will not be accepted.
What’s So Different About the New Book?
The Smashing Book 2 will be published in February 2011 and can be pre-ordered at a big discount in January. It will cost $39.90 and will contain 360 pages. It is a real hardbound book (+ free eBook), with sewn binding, a bookmark and four-color printing. Just as we did last time, we will pack it well, too.
Delivery times and shipping are different this time. All orders will be shipped via air mail. The shipping cost will be low and will be the same for every customer, no matter where they are located.
As with our first printed book, The Smashing Book 2 is a collaboration of talented and knowledgeable folks, among them Mike Rundle, Christian Heilmann, Francisco Inchauste, Vivien Anayian, Susan Weinschenk, Alexander Charchar, Matt Ward and others. The book will feature exclusive full-page illustrations for each chapter. Here we’ve got something special for you as well, but more on that next time.

Rules and Guidelines
- How to participate?
Just write a short comment on this post and tell us why you read Smashing Magazine and how we can improve it. - How many names can fit onto the two pages?
Of course, it depends on the length of the names. We expect around 6,000 readers will be able to fit onto the two pages. - How much time do I have to join in?
The deadline is 26th of November 2010, 11:59 PM CET. We do want to make it to the printer on time after all. - Can anyone take part?
Yes, but you’d better hurry: first come, first served. - Are there any restrictions on the names?
The length of the person’s name (both first and last) must be between 4 and 35 characters. It may contain at most three empty characters. Please note that we will moderate the names, and spammy submissions will not be accepted.
Extra Goodie: Exclusive SM Book 2 Poster!
To make participation even more enticing, we are giving away 50 exclusive Smashing Book 2 posters to participants. The winners will be picked randomly from among all users who comment on this post.
We are working very hard to make the Smashing Book 2 an extremely valuable and useful resource for all designers and developers. We hope to meet your expectations with the new book. Please stay tuned for updates. And don’t forget to leave the comment.

November 24th, 2010 10:01 pmI bought the first Smashing Book and I bought also the “HTML 5 for web designers” from “A list Apart”. Sicerenly, I feel robbed by them. The book is VERY short, the content has nothing special and the price is SO high (‘almost’ the same than Smashing Book).
I would love to buy the second book.
Keep the good work, you know how ;)
Thanks.

November 24th, 2010 10:59 pmI had pre-ordered the first printed book and can’t wait to pre-order the second one :-) I just wish there be more printed books rather than eBooks. My boss at Alienworkers.com said that if they were printed ones, we would have bought them all. So please provide printed books rather than eBooks.
Anyway love the website, love the book(s).

November 24th, 2010 11:01 pmI’m sure this is going to be a great sequel to the first one!
I hope you consider supporting shipping via more reliable means aside from snail mail. The previous experience with the PH customs was a nightmare. I wouldn’t mind paying extra for something this valuable. :)
Making this available in ePub/PDF (DRM-free or otherwise) would also be great.

November 24th, 2010 11:37 pmSmashing Magazine’s greatest feature is probably the detail of the information. It’s one of the few places where you can go and KNOW you’re going to get great, up-to-date information. Keep up the good work!

It keeps me updated about the latest in Design and more (seriously some of the stuff you guys write about is beyond just design). Keep it up!
How you can improve?
I really have no idea! You guys are doing such a great job, so much heart. Maybe you could improve on having more social involvement with the readers? like hosting online event just for the readers and maybe some contest and such :)
much ♥,

I got the first edition next to my desk and will get the sequel whenever it’s out. One question though on the multiformat support : what about code download, example preview, test pages, PSDs or even full PDF / ebook / epub / iPad versions ?
Thanks

November 25th, 2010 1:19 amI like reading the articles on SM. They are well-written and very informative. I also find the tools that you are introducing very useful. I started to use some of them daily when I am prototyping.
As a suggestion, it would be nice to have articles on the findings of recent usability studies.
The first book was great…excited for the second one!

Smashing in my opinion is the best resource for web design professionals, for everyone, beginner or advanced. You guys keep me inspired and up-to-date with the latest trends and techniques.
As for suggestion, I’d really love it if you guys could develop a mobile version (or even an app) of your website. I’m one of those who read Smashing on my BB before I doze of to sleep at night :)

November 25th, 2010 2:07 amLove Smashing Magazine! I can hardly wait for this one! Is there a table of contents available?
I read Smashing Magazine because they are quality articles and always ahead of the game.
I would love to see a video tutorials section with the same quality as the articles. Also, I would love to see full video or text tutorial series that teach a variety of subjects from start to finish such as jQuery, HTML5, CSS3, PHP, XML, or WordPress.

November 25th, 2010 2:11 amSmashing folks, you guys are one of the nicest-to-read feeds in my feedreader!
But there’s one thing:
Please get rid of the twitter-icon at the right top of smashingmagazine.com.
Every time I hope it’s being replaced. And still
But overall, I love you folks!

November 25th, 2010 2:15 amWith Internet web-design developing at a blinding speed, I depend a great deal on the S*Mag Team and trust the resorces presented by them. S*Mag consistently brings to light the best-of-the-best in new design techniques, tools and trends . . . saving me huge amounts of time which I would otherwise be forced to spend researching (instead of doing what I love).
. . . an Austin-Texas-sized “Thanks” for your genuine dedication!
Michał Kowalski Szczecin
November 25th, 2010 2:21 amI read the smashing book because it’s simply one of the best conclusions of complete designer knowledge in a pill. And I’m so happy that soon I’m going to choose the red pill with the giant S on it again. Let’s just see how deep the rabbit hole really is.

November 25th, 2010 2:37 amI read Smashing Magazine because the content is well written, the subjects covered are of interest, and new content is delivered at a good rate. To improve the site perhaps add support for IE6, and perhaps a small fee for readers who don’t want advertisements.

November 25th, 2010 2:50 amI love Smashing Magazine’s awesome design. I am a programmer by trade, and I don’t have much design sense, so the tutorials, awesome themes & icons and all the other resources you provide make my prototypes at least passable, if not extremely beautiful!
Thank you for letting me do my job better. Smashing Magazine is excellent just how it is.

November 25th, 2010 3:00 amSmashing keeps me updated in the webdesign-world and if I ever need inspiration I know where to go.
Finding it hard to suggest improvements but maybe a custom search and a design library (One stop shop for resources) would be good.
Maybe a few posts on the best hardware to use.
Great stuff look forward to reading the new book

November 25th, 2010 3:42 amThere’s no need for *why* I follow this blog, I just think I need to thank you guys for the work that goes into this very, very much, because my design skills have improved quite a lot since starting to follow this site. Well, if I have to give a reason, it’d be that it’s great for inspiration and design theory, and that articles are pretty good reads with their depth. Oh, and for the free fonts!
What could be improved? Can’t think of much… right now it’s just nitpicking. A link to tutorials up the top as well, not just the bottom, and consolidating the Twitter/Facebook sharing links above and below the author info box.

November 25th, 2010 4:05 amI bought the previous book and will be buying this book as well. Smashing magazine always seems to bring out its articles just in time for me to apply to my projects which really helps. Learning from some of the articles which has really enables me to complete my projects faster and learn more at the same time.
Also the freebies being all in one place really helps me find what I need, instead of searching through the internet.

November 25th, 2010 4:13 amA Smashing Hi to the Smashing Magazine Team !
Since i discovered the website i bookmarked it and i go everyday on it (at least when im at my work place).
I like the fact that there are often updates and new articles (almost everyday !!! great job !!) so keep it up.
I believe there is a room for improvment though. Maybe more articles about really techy stuff and good practices would be welcome (especially regarding Javascript).
Nowadays, JS is deeply part of design in general and interaction. As a web front-end developer, i’d love to see some really technical articles :)
Can’t wait for the new book (i already got the first one on my desk)
