Smashing Book 2 Is Coming: Add Your Name To The Book!

Update:(30.01.2011) The Smashing Book 2, with 2.970 names of our readers, is now available in the Smashing Shop.

Update: (30.01.2011) If you are planning to write an article or review of Smashing Book 2, please feel free to use the Smashing Book 2 Media Kit (.zip, 7 Mb). The kit contains images, illustrations and photos that you might find useful for your article. Also, please don’t forget to tweet the link to the review with the hashtag #smbook2, so we can track it and add it to our list of reviews. Your help is sincerely appreciated. Thank you for your time and your efforts, guys!

We’ve got some exciting news: the printed Smashing Book 2 is coming. We will launch pre-orders in January 2011 and will start shipping the book in February 2011. We are just putting the final touches on the brand new book, and we are confident that it will be a valuable, timeless and affordable book for you, our dear readers, and all designers and developers worldwide.

After much difficulty with the first book, we have learned our lessons: Smashing Book 2 will have a much better stitched binding, a hardcover, more pages and a bit larger in size.

Book cover

Our Readers Deserve Credit

It’s not unusual for authors to dedicate their books to people they care about: loved ones, family or perhaps friends or colleagues. In our case, we would like to dedicate this new book to all of our readers: you. But we don’t want to just do it with a short acknowledgment in the preface. Anyone could do that! We have a slightly better idea.

We would like to print the names of our readers in the book. To do this, we have reserved a double-page on which we will print together all of the names of readers who comment on this article in the shape of the Smashing Magazine logo: ASCII art at its best! If necessary, we will add two more double-pages so that everyone fits.

Leave a Comment and Add Your Name to the Book!

It’s simple: just write a short comment on this post and tell us why you read Smashing Magazine and how we can improve it. You may use your full name or an alias; the length allowed is between 4 and 35 characters. Your name may consist of at most four parts (for example, Patrick Michael Philips or John F. Doe or Alberto de la Cruz). Special characters are allowed. Please note that we will moderate the names, and spammy submissions will not be accepted.

What’s So Different About the New Book?

The Smashing Book 2 will be published in February 2011 and can be pre-ordered at a big discount in January. It will cost $39.90 and will contain 360 pages. It is a real hardbound book (+ free eBook), with sewn binding, a bookmark and four-color printing. Just as we did last time, we will pack it well, too.

Delivery times and shipping are different this time. All orders will be shipped via air mail. The shipping cost will be low and will be the same for every customer, no matter where they are located.

As with our first printed book, The Smashing Book 2 is a collaboration of talented and knowledgeable folks, among them Mike Rundle, Christian Heilmann, Francisco Inchauste, Vivien Anayian, Susan Weinschenk, Alexander Charchar, Matt Ward and others. The book will feature exclusive full-page illustrations for each chapter. Here we’ve got something special for you as well, but more on that next time.

Rules and Guidelines

  • How to participate?
Just write a short comment on this post and tell us why you read Smashing Magazine and how we can improve it.
  • How many names can fit onto the two pages?
Of course, it depends on the length of the names. We expect around 6,000 readers will be able to fit onto the two pages.
  • How much time do I have to join in?
The deadline is 26th of November 2010, 11:59 PM CET. We do want to make it to the printer on time after all.
  • Can anyone take part?
Yes, but you’d better hurry: first come, first served.
  • Are there any restrictions on the names?
The length of the person’s name (both first and last) must be between 4 and 35 characters. It may contain at most three empty characters. Please note that we will moderate the names, and spammy submissions will not be accepted.

Extra Goodie: Exclusive SM Book 2 Poster!

To make participation even more enticing, we are giving away 50 exclusive Smashing Book 2 posters to participants. The winners will be picked randomly from among all users who comment on this post.

We are working very hard to make the Smashing Book 2 an extremely valuable and useful resource for all designers and developers. We hope to meet your expectations with the new book. Please stay tuned for updates. And don’t forget to leave the comment.

The Smashing Editorial loves high-quality content and cares about little details. We also believe that content and design are crafts worth sharpening.

Great news! My 5 cents. So, why I read Smashing Magazine:

    * Allows me to follow latest trends in web design and usability
    * Gives me examples of cool css and js implementations
    * Has fresh posts
    * Quick website

How Smashing Magazine can be improved:

    * Some posts have limited depth of research or/and analysis of the subject
    * A section similar to “Read More” after each posts would be beneficial
    * Profanity config and ordering on comments

    Hope this helps!

I read smashing magazine because it’s way more fun than all the stuff I’m doing in my I.T. Degree!!! Although I love my degree really, Smashing magazine gives me a welcome and interesting break from studying – I would like to see more best practice examples such as when to use html 5 as opposed to xhtml 1.0 and loads more javascript, PHP, Flash tutorials

    Thanks for this oppurtunity.

Why I love Smashing & Noupe mag:

*Awesome inspirational articles that visualize webtrends
*Insightful technical articles that spread knowledge about the science of design and typography
*Socializing community articles that remind us of the importance of the world outside our offices
    *Freebies. Everyone loves freebies ;)
*Interaction with with readers: comments are not moderated even if they are critical of the articles or this website

What sucks about Smashing (hopefully I was right with my previous point):
*No forum, I would love to see a vBulletin deployment on smashing
*My last book got lost in mail ant took months to deliver
    *Not enough attention for Drupal!

Hopefully it is clear that the pros are much more important than my cons, I will order the 2nd book as soon as I spot the pre-order form!

I’m always looking for good references that I can learn from myself and recommend to other designers. Smashing Book is one of them. In my opinion it is the reference with the highest value in modern webdesign out there. And that surely is reason enough for me to buy Smashing Book #2 as well ;)

Great work guys, keep on smashing :D

Why do I read Smashing Magazine online and how can it be improved?

Smashing Magazine is the quintessential online magazine for designers and web developers – fact. Having this invaluable resource at your fingertips is fantastic – the site is full of current, relevant content covering a diverse range of hot design / development topics and acts as a daily source of inspiration. Checking into Smashing Magazine has been part of my daily routine for as long as I can remember. If you don’t already, I’d strongly recommend checking into Smashing Magazine on a daily basis too! :)

    How can it be improved?
Maybe Smashing could produce a weekly, (roundup), podcast on the site delivering useful and innovative information to Web designers and developers – #useful :)

    Cheers

    Mike

    Hi there!

I love Smashing Magazine, but unfortunately I haven’t had so much time anymore to read all the posts about webdesign, interfaces and UX (my fav subjects).

Since I have been working and an ecommerce and digital marketing consultant, my actual needs right now are for HIRING PROFESSIONALS and search for online softwares and apps. I always use the “search bar” for the later matter, but it’s not so usefull, since I may miss something similar just because it’s written in another word that I may be not familiar with. Anyway, my suggestions are:

1- A freelance job board with a detailed description and if the professional works for jobs in other countries (I’m from Brazil).

2- A “library” of online softwares and applications for a quick search. I don’t think there is anything like this in the web, so it would be a huge help for your desperate reader who’s looking for a mind map feature, for example.

Congrats for your new book. I’ll definitely buy it to support you guys!

Smashing Book was a great reference book to go over and be reminded what my design lacked, but what I enjoied the most is the “working with the professionals” section. It gave me very useful tips when I started freelancing. I’d love to see new improved tips or just new approaches to clients as things might have changed.
    Thanks Smashing!

I’m an avid reader of SM though I admit I don’t comment as often as I should (I was featured once as well, but my site since has been going through a revamp session) . This is a great idea though, seeing as how SM’s format is a give and take – you guys give us tips, tricks, KNOWLEDGE, and we (try) to give feedback that will help future articles.

Smashing has been my go to source for web design-related media for a good year or so. I didn’t get to purchase the first book around BUT I’m definately pre-ordering this one. Can’t wait for this to be released!

I just read this magazine because many things are a source of information for totally different domains, apart from web-design.

Smashing Magazine is THE design resource. I come here for articles, quality, inspiration and info about typography. To make it better, you should consider adding more jquery resources and articles ;)

The Smashing Magazine taught me half of the things that I know about design. For a person with no formal training in this profession to be able to work professionally speaks volume about the content and insight of the book.

Smashing Mag is one of the best resources for web design. I suggest you guys continue focusing on web design only, as this is what you’re known for. Throwing very technical discussions on algorithms and programming might drive people away, as what happened to other websites. Good job SM!

What I like about SmashingMag: your approach to articles. Some articles are not for everybody, but I appreciate the hard work you are doing to put the high quality content together. More articles on Fireworks would be great!

Regarding the SM Book 2: what an excellent idea! I am really excited about the book, especially with the remarkable line-up of writers you’ve got there. Looking forward to Francisco Inchauste’s and Alexander Charchar’s pieces, as I have been reading their blogs for a while.

    Exciting! :-) Nice work, guys!

    Hi,
I pre-ordered the first edition of the smashing book and when it arrived I read it within a week. But I like that this book is more than a one-time-reading-book. It’s one of my best “friends” in my bookshelf!
And I love “The Guide to Fantastic Color Usage In Web Design and Usability” … thumbs up!

Is the second edition going to be a “reloaded” version or do you plan to provide new content? That would be perfect, of course!

Btw. love the idea to be a part of the 2nd smashing book! Thanks!

    Why i read smashing magazine:

If i get stuck whilst i’m developing or designing, the first thing that comes in to my head is “ah smashing magazine will know” and nine times out of ten you have an article or a resource to help me out.

    How to improve Smashing Magazine:

Develop a mobile version of your site, you could even make an app. I would love to read your articles and cartoons on the go!

I absolutely love Smashing Magazine! It’s a great resource for broad info on everything design/technology.

There is very little that could be done to improve it, thought I do have a cool suggestion! It’d be neat if your twitter followers could vote on what they want to hear about next. If smashing mag was deciding between two article topics for instance, the twitter followers could tweet @ smashing mag and vote for what they want to read most!

I also think it’d be cool to have maybe a “Celebrity” article contribution every so often. Get well known designers, developers, entrepreneurs, etc. to contribute an article on their expertise.

Keep up the great work, guys!

I read Smashing Magazine because you have thoughtful and thorough articles about everything web development and design. Most of the articles are easy to read, even if you’re not a web developer. My favorite articles are those on design and typography. I’d like to see some articles on the visual design of games in the future, that would make SM an even more must read for me. I’m really looking forward to the second book, this is a must buy :).

Smashing Magazine is my favorite source for web design related news and inspiration… One thing I would like it the ability to subscribe to a specify category of posts — like, have a separate feed for Graphics, Inspiration, Design, and Code.

Keep up the good work and cheers on the new book!

When I first started as a freelance web developer, the first resource I was told to check out was SM. Two years later I still read this blog following every new post.

What really brings me back here every morning to check if there’s a new post is the high quality of the articles. Its amazing how most of your articles somehow cover all the readers, be it a newbie or an experienced designer.

The Smashing Book 1 has helped me greatly and I cant wait to get my copy of TSB2

    Smashing Magazine:: the web-design pez-dispenser.

The website is clean, clear and simple. Its content is relevant, useful and always interesting. The book (mk2) has me eagerly waiting its release.

The downsides to SM?.. As with most websites, adverts are an eyesore, and this one is no exception. The ads take up more than 30% of the pages’ width in some areas ..
And unfortunately for SM’s readers, we only get one article a day :(

The SM has quality articles, but also has a wonderful, understandable and exciting articles and team. As I would not want a copy of this book for me with my name on it? You are my heroes! If it was something better, invest in a more practical way to find the content here (cataloging / themes).

Smashing Magazine has ever been a great blog for bringing quality contents to its readers. Having a hard copy of those post as handy as a smashing book is pretty much a great resource for us. It would be great if there are different categories to focus per chapter. Both in web-development, designing as well as the business world.

Great job as always! SM! :D

On my personal humble opinion, this website has came a long way since day one and I believe it will go even further in the future.
