Smashing Book 2 Is Coming: Add Your Name To The Book!

Update:(30.01.2011) The Smashing Book 2, with 2.970 names of our readers, is now available in the Smashing Shop.

Update: (30.01.2011) If you are planning to write an article or review of Smashing Book 2, please feel free to use the Smashing Book 2 Media Kit (.zip, 7 Mb). The kit contains images, illustrations and photos that you might find useful for your article. Also, please don’t forget to tweet the link to the review with the hashtag #smbook2, so we can track it and add it to our list of reviews. Your help is sincerely appreciated. Thank you for your time and your efforts, guys!

We’ve got some exciting news: the printed Smashing Book 2 is coming. We will launch pre-orders in January 2011 and will start shipping the book in February 2011. We are just putting the final touches on the brand new book, and we are confident that it will be a valuable, timeless and affordable book for you, our dear readers, and all designers and developers worldwide.

After much difficulty with the first book, we have learned our lessons: Smashing Book 2 will have a much better stitched binding, a hardcover, more pages and a bit larger in size.

Book cover

Our Readers Deserve Credit

It’s not unusual for authors to dedicate their books to people they care about: loved ones, family or perhaps friends or colleagues. In our case, we would like to dedicate this new book to all of our readers: you. But we don’t want to just do it with a short acknowledgment in the preface. Anyone could do that! We have a slightly better idea.

We would like to print the names of our readers in the book. To do this, we have reserved a double-page on which we will print together all of the names of readers who comment on this article in the shape of the Smashing Magazine logo: ASCII art at its best! If necessary, we will add two more double-pages so that everyone fits.

Leave a Comment and Add Your Name to the Book!

It’s simple: just write a short comment on this post and tell us why you read Smashing Magazine and how we can improve it. You may use your full name or an alias; the length allowed is between 4 and 35 characters. Your name may consist of at most four parts (for example, Patrick Michael Philips or John F. Doe or Alberto de la Cruz). Special characters are allowed. Please note that we will moderate the names, and spammy submissions will not be accepted.

What’s So Different About the New Book?

The Smashing Book 2 will be published in February 2011 and can be pre-ordered at a big discount in January. It will cost $39.90 and will contain 360 pages. It is a real hardbound book (+ free eBook), with sewn binding, a bookmark and four-color printing. Just as we did last time, we will pack it well, too.

Delivery times and shipping are different this time. All orders will be shipped via air mail. The shipping cost will be low and will be the same for every customer, no matter where they are located.

As with our first printed book, The Smashing Book 2 is a collaboration of talented and knowledgeable folks, among them Mike Rundle, Christian Heilmann, Francisco Inchauste, Vivien Anayian, Susan Weinschenk, Alexander Charchar, Matt Ward and others. The book will feature exclusive full-page illustrations for each chapter. Here we’ve got something special for you as well, but more on that next time.

Rules and Guidelines

  • How to participate?
Just write a short comment on this post and tell us why you read Smashing Magazine and how we can improve it.
  • How many names can fit onto the two pages?
Of course, it depends on the length of the names. We expect around 6,000 readers will be able to fit onto the two pages.
  • How much time do I have to join in?
The deadline is 26th of November 2010, 11:59 PM CET. We do want to make it to the printer on time after all.
  • Can anyone take part?
Yes, but you’d better hurry: first come, first served.
  • Are there any restrictions on the names?
The length of the person’s name (both first and last) must be between 4 and 35 characters. It may contain at most three empty characters. Please note that we will moderate the names, and spammy submissions will not be accepted.

Extra Goodie: Exclusive SM Book 2 Poster!

To make participation even more enticing, we are giving away 50 exclusive Smashing Book 2 posters to participants. The winners will be picked randomly from among all users who comment on this post.

We are working very hard to make the Smashing Book 2 an extremely valuable and useful resource for all designers and developers. We hope to meet your expectations with the new book. Please stay tuned for updates. And don’t forget to leave the comment.

The Smashing Editorial loves high-quality content and cares about little details. We also believe that content and design are crafts worth sharpening.

I read Smashing Magazine because is simply great when it comes to all content related to the web and about making it beautiful and useful.

This magazine can be improved by adding more content and reorganize the content into even more categories so older posts are still easy to find. Look forward to the second book!

The SM has quality articles, but also has a wonderful, understandable and exciting articles and team. As I would not want a copy of this book for me with my name on it? You are my heroes! If it was something better, invest in a more practical way to find the content here (cataloging / themes).

I read this book because it is not like the other books, this one give information that is current and relevant to the current time. Its like seeing a new car model online then seeing that same car model on the street as soon as you get up open the door and go outside now that’s amazing.

In terms of improvements not sure think you guys did a great job on the first book.

I’m just looking forward to seeing what the new book will contain.

by the way I’m a reader from Trinidad & Tobago so your book is reaching far.

As a Graphic Designer, from the time of being a student to now Smashing Magazine has been an important part of my inspiration, filling bored time, and finding amazing, great resources for my designs and related projects. I’ve recommended the book to be purchased by the school library, and Follow avidly via RSS. I love Smashing Magazine, It’s one of the best design resources out there and I’m happy to be a part of that, even if it’s only reading it.

Smashing Magazine added itself to my list of go-to web sites not long after it came to my attention. Even with fantastic long-running sites like A List Apart, Think Vitamin and others, Smashing Magazine set itself apart by providing good links and information that easily fill in the cracks between other publications. Even better Smashing Magazine isn’t afraid to offer constructive commentary to feed the community discussion and the mind.

Well, that’s excelent news about comming SMB#2. It’s hard to say how much SMB#1 helps me in my bussiness life. All the stuffs in first book is pretty familiar to me but the way how everything is arranged in a meaningful whole is simply unbelievable.
How to improve SM … I’d like to see app in AppStore which will compound all the content (or maybe not all) from the SM web, and if it is possible, putting SMB#1 & #2 to the BookStore would be terrific!

There are thousands of web design resources to be found on the Web. However, Smashing Magazine is one of-a-kind and beats its competition without a word. SM provides an insight into every single aspect of the Web; the articles are versatile and everyone can find a topic that interests him the most. What I’m trying to say, is that SM is not only about design or programming or technology or inspiration or social media, etc. — it’s really all about everything! And that’s what makes it so influential and popular. We, designers are interested in many sides of our field; and every one of us has different needs. That’s my reason I love to read Smashing Magazine because it provides meaningful information on the topics I am interested in.

I bought my first book because I knew it was worth it! Even my college professor recommended it for his students! And I can’t wait to get 2nd issue.

I have just small suggestion — to add a Facebook and Twitter icons/buttons at the top of SmashingMagazine.com home page. I think that might be really beneficial for new visitors.

Thank you guys, one more, time for great content and for influencing/improving our Web community!

I read smashing magazine because of the way it keeps up with current trends in the industry. However I would like to see some more “back to basics” stuff as I’m just getting back into the design process after many years away -and could do with some more primers on the current standards.

What I would like to improve – add custom search for smashing network, also i would welcome some fine Android app for reading the posts.

Loving SM since the day I found it. It just gives me good info about design and shows me neat tricks. Which probably got me from beginner to regular and hopefully will get me to advanced!

I just can not help returning again and again to Smashing Magazine due to the variety of quality topics you cover and oh the inspiration. Many an afternoon has been lost surfing the sites from one of those ‘The best X something’ articles you guys publish. Keep it up and I’ll definitely be adding book 2 to the shelf next to book 1.

What I like about SmashingMag: your approach to articles. Some articles are not for everybody, but I appreciate the hard work you are doing to put the high quality content together. More articles on Fireworks would be great!

Regarding the SM Book 2: what an excellent idea! I am really excited about the book, especially with the remarkable line-up of writers you’ve got there. Looking forward to Francisco Inchauste’s and Alexander Charchar’s pieces, as I have been reading their blogs for a while.

    Exciting! :-) Nice work, guys!

    Hi,
I pre-ordered the first edition of the smashing book and when it arrived I read it within a week. But I like that this book is more than a one-time-reading-book. It’s one of my best “friends” in my bookshelf!
And I love “The Guide to Fantastic Color Usage In Web Design and Usability” … thumbs up!

Is the second edition going to be a “reloaded” version or do you plan to provide new content? That would be perfect, of course!

Btw. love the idea to be a part of the 2nd smashing book! Thanks!

    Why i read smashing magazine:

If i get stuck whilst i’m developing or designing, the first thing that comes in to my head is “ah smashing magazine will know” and nine times out of ten you have an article or a resource to help me out.

    How to improve Smashing Magazine:

Develop a mobile version of your site, you could even make an app. I would love to read your articles and cartoons on the go!

I absolutely love Smashing Magazine! It’s a great resource for broad info on everything design/technology.

There is very little that could be done to improve it, thought I do have a cool suggestion! It’d be neat if your twitter followers could vote on what they want to hear about next. If smashing mag was deciding between two article topics for instance, the twitter followers could tweet @ smashing mag and vote for what they want to read most!

I also think it’d be cool to have maybe a “Celebrity” article contribution every so often. Get well known designers, developers, entrepreneurs, etc. to contribute an article on their expertise.

Keep up the great work, guys!

I read Smashing Magazine because you have thoughtful and thorough articles about everything web development and design. Most of the articles are easy to read, even if you’re not a web developer. My favorite articles are those on design and typography. I’d like to see some articles on the visual design of games in the future, that would make SM an even more must read for me. I’m really looking forward to the second book, this is a must buy :).

Smashing Magazine is my favorite source for web design related news and inspiration… One thing I would like it the ability to subscribe to a specify category of posts — like, have a separate feed for Graphics, Inspiration, Design, and Code.

Keep up the good work and cheers on the new book!

When I first started as a freelance web developer, the first resource I was told to check out was SM. Two years later I still read this blog following every new post.

What really brings me back here every morning to check if there’s a new post is the high quality of the articles. Its amazing how most of your articles somehow cover all the readers, be it a newbie or an experienced designer.

The Smashing Book 1 has helped me greatly and I cant wait to get my copy of TSB2

    Smashing Magazine:: the web-design pez-dispenser.

The website is clean, clear and simple. Its content is relevant, useful and always interesting. The book (mk2) has me eagerly waiting its release.

The downsides to SM?.. As with most websites, adverts are an eyesore, and this one is no exception. The ads take up more than 30% of the pages’ width in some areas ..
And unfortunately for SM’s readers, we only get one article a day :(

The SM has quality articles, but also has a wonderful, understandable and exciting articles and team. As I would not want a copy of this book for me with my name on it? You are my heroes! If it was something better, invest in a more practical way to find the content here (cataloging / themes).

Smashing Magazine has ever been a great blog for bringing quality contents to its readers. Having a hard copy of those post as handy as a smashing book is pretty much a great resource for us. It would be great if there are different categories to focus per chapter. Both in web-development, designing as well as the business world.

Great job as always! SM! :D

I am a fan, I have the book and every time someone says “I need inspiration” I always recommend a visit to smashing magazine.

On my personal humble opinion, this website has came a long way since day one and I believe it will go even further in the future.
