Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: December 2010

Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use a specific wallpaper for a longer period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers for over 12 months. To make them a little more distinctive than the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you happen to be searching for a specific day of the month, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?

This post features 40 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe for December 2010. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.

Please notice:

  • all images can be clicked on and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
  • you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?

So what wallpapers have we received for December 2010?

Update: you may be interested in Smashing Magazine January 2011 Windows 7 Theme (calendar) and Smashing Magazine January 2011 Windows 7 Theme (no calendar).

Good luck to the Bells. They are working hard. Lack of diversity is in the eye of the beholder. All the calendars have a northern European or American feel. Here in Australia, it is summer….we are not thinking blue and silver, frost on windows and the like. Cold weather is optional!. Will we see one from China when Spring Festival comes around? All the submissions are in good faith. Each month I seem to find one that I like enough to put on my desktop.
So… my thanks to all who submit one or more.

Why can’t a send the image to my desktop? I usually just select my size with calendar and when the new screen with the image pops up, I right click and send to desktop, or set as background, but now when I click on any of the sizes or the preview it takes me to the image but I can’t right click, I get a zoom in or out option only. Adrienne,

I designed December Dream. I’m very glad you like it! I emailed SM to ask about the problems that everyone seems to be having when they try to open up the wallpaper. The wallpapers open just fine for me (I use the Safari browser on my Mac). I’m not sure what the problem is, and SM said it worked fine for them as well. They wonder if it’s the browsers and versions that people are using.

I like December Dream and Happy Festivus the best, because they aren’t as ‘snowy’ as most of them (I don’t live in a region where it snows) and the calendars are in a region that I won’t have my icons. And I can read the calendars quickly! When the numbers are in a straight line, they look awesome, but my slow brain can’t pick up which number is next week Wednesday.

But keep up the great (and free!) work!

I really enjoyed this months post of wallpapers. Downloaded a couple already. But I am really shocked at the comments. @superbuddha @jenny @stephen seriously you people which planet are you from. If three talented sisters who are amazing and unique share their work…. how the hell is it your problem! People if you say SM is branding them or so….. reality check they just keep the show on by their amazing work. If you guys feel that 3 sisters are over powering the whole SM post I think you better find another link to get wallpapers. These sisters are talented and deserve the space they get on the post. BTW 3 wallpapers in comparison to the whole post doesn’t make it a Bell post! And I hope SM does come out someday with a Bell sister wallpaper post. @buddha your statistic speak for itself. You just gave everyone a glimpse of how talented these girls are. At last all I want to say is @oliviabell @sashabell you are amazing in your own way. Keep it coming.

    • 147

You realise that there was a minimum of 3 calendars by the bell sisters OVER THE LAST FIVE MONTH EVERY MONTH IN EVERY ISSUE, and their work is always so similar that the guys from SM posted this month the same sock calendar than last month.

      +1
    • 148

Jonathan, have they payed you to say this?
I’m sorry but I fail to see what makes them so much better than the rest, I’m not trying to say that they have no talent but there’s nothing which really distinguishes them from the rest.

so much bell talk. I never even noticed, probably because I don’t use the photography calendars. Maybe they just have more things up because it’s easier to slap a calendar from 1 of the many photos they have taken. what takes longer? an illustration or photo processing.

If we submitted under different names, what would the difference be?

We may have the same surname, but we’re our own people. Smashing Mag haven’t said who can or cannot submit. Although we’re sisters, I don’t feel that means we shouldn’t be able to submit a wallpaper just because one sister has…

If that were the case, there wouldn’t be much love between us – I’m surprised anyone thinks there is any difference between 3 random people submitting and 3 sisters.

If you note, the calendars each of us submitted are different… it isn’t like we all submitted a red apple ;)

I personally don’t understand why the Bell sisters have to face so much persecution every single month. I’m pretty sure this must constitute as some sort of bullying.

If you don’t like the fact that their designs get in every month, enter your own; SM only accept a limited amount. The more designs they get, the more chance you get your wish (and for what reason I’ll never know) of the Bell sisters not being featured.

Come on guys; be good sports.

I’m from south america….and i’m always around this magazine….the articles are excellent…..but when it comes to monthly wallpaper collections………I don’t know…..I think more designers from south should submit wallpapers….there’s a lot of wallpapers about winter….but none about summer (we are in summer here…remember?)….

    Thx anyway….
    and sorry about my english…

I am currently clarifying the copyright issues with Sasha Bell. It is very important for us to respect designer’s rights. We’ll certainly keep that in mind for the next month.

I think the criticism is unavoidable (unfortunately), because You are not only sharing the name but also taste in design…
BUT i like Your photography and maybe for some people it’s nice to get similar design every month. I’m cool with that. I think if SM can pick more designs from others than I don’t care how many picks Bell sisters get… as far as i can choose something nice :)

That post is nothing to do with me, I just feel for the artist(s) whose work is being used without permission or credit to generate publicity and profit for others. It’s nothing personal, and the Bell sisters are clearly talented – I really like a lot of their photography – this issue just rubs me up the wrong way :-/ Anyway, I’m going to let the matter drop now, sorry if I was too harsh.

I appreciate the issue is contentious, I really do. As someone who deals with the Internet all the time, it’s not just visuals that people use without permission; code gets stolen frequently, but when others start dragging names through the snow (I thought it appropriate given the current weather conditions ;] – Just lightening the mood) it just gets awfully messy…

I think it’s also important to note that all “offending” artworks (if you want to call them that, I call them a mistake at best…) have been removed from all of the sites the bell sisters own, they are not selling them any further… All works henceforth are absolute works from the artists’ minds… I appreciate it’s SM’s responsibility to make sure that all work is the Copyright holders’.

When one continues to perpetuate an issue which has been settled, it harms all parties involved, not just those being accused.

Glad to see that it struck some chords, though, and I’m glad for your apology – I’m sure Sasha will be much more pleased to hear it than I.

    Thanks for your response.

I feel like this is very immature and “unprofessional” … of all the people complaining. I don’t believe desktop wallpapers should be something to whine about. Maybe if you were PAYING for a Smashing Magazine subscription or something, but you’re not. Be thankful for what both SM and the Bell Sisters are doing. Stop being babies please.

I agree with Jonathan full heartedly.

Yum – on time this month! It has been difficult to decide for a favorite… I might swap it over half way through the month for some variety.

I first went for Khaos, but couldn’t find a version which was legible on my widescreen monitor, so I settled for “Inspiring Wall” by Peter Lee!

I also like “Frozen”, except that the calendar would be completely covered by my desktop icons, and “Burnout 2010″ – which will be my next choice for the second half of December… [I'm getting tired of the "Bell" family.]
