Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: December 2010
Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use a specific wallpaper for a longer period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers for over 12 months. To make them a little more distinctive than the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you happen to be searching for a specific day of the month, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?
This post features 40 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe for December 2010. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.
Please notice:
- all images can be clicked on and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
- you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?
So what wallpapers have we received for December 2010?
Update: you may be interested in Smashing Magazine January 2011 Windows 7 Theme (calendar) and Smashing Magazine January 2011 Windows 7 Theme (no calendar).

December 1st, 2010 3:06 pmI’m sorry to say but I’ve just about had my fill of the Bell sisters’ stuff.. yawn. Nothing personal, they’re just so samey, and the fact that the designers themselves are unethical isn’t helping.

December 2nd, 2010 3:48 amGood luck to the Bells. They are working hard. Lack of diversity is in the eye of the beholder. All the calendars have a northern European or American feel. Here in Australia, it is summer….we are not thinking blue and silver, frost on windows and the like. Cold weather is optional!. Will we see one from China when Spring Festival comes around? All the submissions are in good faith. Each month I seem to find one that I like enough to put on my desktop.
So… my thanks to all who submit one or more.

December 2nd, 2010 6:50 amWhy can’t a send the image to my desktop? I usually just select my size with calendar and when the new screen with the image pops up, I right click and send to desktop, or set as background, but now when I click on any of the sizes or the preview it takes me to the image but I can’t right click, I get a zoom in or out option only. Any help?

December 2nd, 2010 7:17 amI’m dissappointed this month. I was expecting more ‘Christmas’ themed wallpapers.

December 2nd, 2010 9:58 amI love December Dream, but the image links won’t pull up the photo for me…
Beth
December 2nd, 2010 10:33 amCan someone fix “DECEMBER DREAM?” I absolutely love it and want it without the calendar. None of the links are working for it. Just an “x” pops up. I tried the preview link and it works, but it’s just too grainy on my desktop. Thanks and happy holiday!

December 2nd, 2010 10:34 amGreat Wallpapers…but I can’t get December Dreams to open on my computer. Is anyone else having that problem? It’s a beautiful picture and I’d really love to use it for the month. Thanks!

December 2nd, 2010 12:24 pmI love Flower Bokeh, Sad Waters and Winter Wicklow but my favourite is Casual Catwalk! So well done Nathalie, I love what you did with the shadows! And well done to everyone else who I’ve mentioned here!

December 2nd, 2010 12:49 pmCan you fix the December Dream wallpaper. I love it but not having the size for my screen makes it all grainy.
P.s. I love the artists series with the trees, I’d like to replace her November tree with her December tree.
Thanks!

December 6th, 2010 12:44 pmAdrienne,
I designed December Dream. I’m very glad you like it! I emailed SM to ask about the problems that everyone seems to be having when they try to open up the wallpaper. The wallpapers open just fine for me (I use the Safari browser on my Mac). I’m not sure what the problem is, and SM said it worked fine for them as well. They wonder if it’s the browsers and versions that people are using.

December 3rd, 2010 2:37 ami love the work of Nathalie Ouederni …such a creative idea

December 3rd, 2010 4:57 amI like December Dream and Happy Festivus the best, because they aren’t as ‘snowy’ as most of them (I don’t live in a region where it snows) and the calendars are in a region that I won’t have my icons. And I can read the calendars quickly! When the numbers are in a straight line, they look awesome, but my slow brain can’t pick up which number is next week Wednesday.
But keep up the great (and free!) work!

December 3rd, 2010 7:07 amThanks a lot to all designers that gave those wallpapers to us !

December 4th, 2010 6:22 amI really enjoyed this months post of wallpapers. Downloaded a couple already. But I am really shocked at the comments. @superbuddha @jenny @stephen seriously you people which planet are you from. If three talented sisters who are amazing and unique share their work…. how the hell is it your problem! People if you say SM is branding them or so….. reality check they just keep the show on by their amazing work. If you guys feel that 3 sisters are over powering the whole SM post I think you better find another link to get wallpapers. These sisters are talented and deserve the space they get on the post. BTW 3 wallpapers in comparison to the whole post doesn’t make it a Bell post! And I hope SM does come out someday with a Bell sister wallpaper post. @buddha your statistic speak for itself. You just gave everyone a glimpse of how talented these girls are. At last all I want to say is @oliviabell @sashabell you are amazing in your own way. Keep it coming.
Stephan
December 7th, 2010 6:40 amYou realise that there was a minimum of 3 calendars by the bell sisters OVER THE LAST FIVE MONTH EVERY MONTH IN EVERY ISSUE, and their work is always so similar that the guys from SM posted this month the same sock calendar than last month.
Jenny
December 15th, 2010 11:33 amJonathan, have they payed you to say this?
I’m sorry but I fail to see what makes them so much better than the rest, I’m not trying to say that they have no talent but there’s nothing which really distinguishes them from the rest.

December 4th, 2010 6:40 amChristmas past is my fave.

December 4th, 2010 11:51 amWould have really liked Burnout 2010 in 1280 x 800, it is a standard size for all macbook 13’3 inch. It’s my fav but doesn’t come in my size :-(

December 4th, 2010 4:47 pmso much bell talk. I never even noticed, probably because I don’t use the photography calendars. Maybe they just have more things up because it’s easier to slap a calendar from 1 of the many photos they have taken. what takes longer? an illustration or photo processing.

December 5th, 2010 8:04 pmMy favorites this month are Starleaves, Fun in the Snow and New Santa… New Gifts. FYI – I also liked December Dream but I had a problem opening the preview to download it. I tried two different sizes and both of them just came up with error messages. Thank you to everyone who submits their work. The wallpapers here are by far the most interesting I have seen on the web!

December 6th, 2010 12:47 pmSmashing Magazine,
Thank you so much for including me in this month’s collection!!
Everyone else,
I designed December Dream, and I understand that many of you are having trouble trying to open up the wallpaper. I emailed SM to ask about the problems that everyone seems to be having. The wallpapers open just fine for me (I use the Safari browser on my Mac). I’m not sure what the problem is, and SM said it worked fine for them as well. They wonder if it’s the browsers and versions that people are using.
I’m sorry for the inconvenience and hope I find out why the wallpaper isn’t opening. If anyone is interested, then I can email you the wallpaper!
