Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: December 2010
Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use a specific wallpaper for a longer period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers for over 12 months. To make them a little more distinctive than the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you happen to be searching for a specific day of the month, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?
This post features 40 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe for December 2010. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.
Please notice:
- all images can be clicked on and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
- you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?
So what wallpapers have we received for December 2010?
Update: you may be interested in Smashing Magazine January 2011 Windows 7 Theme (calendar) and Smashing Magazine January 2011 Windows 7 Theme (no calendar).

December 1st, 2010 1:38 pmYour calendar issue starts to be the personal showcase of the Bell sisters. This is totally unprofessional from smashing magazine.
Olivia Bell
December 1st, 2010 2:04 pmIf we submitted under different names, what would the difference be?
We may have the same surname, but we’re our own people. Smashing Mag haven’t said who can or cannot submit. Although we’re sisters, I don’t feel that means we shouldn’t be able to submit a wallpaper just because one sister has…
If that were the case, there wouldn’t be much love between us – I’m surprised anyone thinks there is any difference between 3 random people submitting and 3 sisters.
If you note, the calendars each of us submitted are different… it isn’t like we all submitted a red apple ;)
Jonathan
December 1st, 2010 2:29 pmI personally don’t understand why the Bell sisters have to face so much persecution every single month. I’m pretty sure this must constitute as some sort of bullying.
If you don’t like the fact that their designs get in every month, enter your own; SM only accept a limited amount. The more designs they get, the more chance you get your wish (and for what reason I’ll never know) of the Bell sisters not being featured.
Come on guys; be good sports.
Jenny
December 1st, 2010 3:35 pmBut it’s not about the fact that your sisters, it’s about the fact that your work as individuals always get submitted no matter what, well at least you and Sasha’s work, I’d better not include Rosanna in this since she seems to be new to Smashing Magazine.
Superbuddha
December 1st, 2010 4:12 pmBetween you three you had:
3 calendars in this issue,
4 in the November issue,
3 in October,
4 in September,
and 3 in August.
Well I think that’s a lot.
Stephan
December 1st, 2010 4:55 pmDefinitely too much Bells! Where’s the diversity?
JKuik
December 2nd, 2010 11:20 amI think the criticism is unavoidable (unfortunately), because You are not only sharing the name but also taste in design…
BUT i like Your photography and maybe for some people it’s nice to get similar design every month. I’m cool with that. I think if SM can pick more designs from others than I don’t care how many picks Bell sisters get… as far as i can choose something nice :)
msdahl
December 15th, 2010 2:25 pmI can’t believe how catty all of these people are being just because two people happen to be related and submit their artwork. Maybe their artwork gets “submitted no matter what” because they’re talented? Besides, what is the big deal? Can’t you all just enjoy the FREE goodies Smashing has to offer without turning in to a bunch of sniveling babies?
Vitaly Friedman
December 1st, 2010 5:03 pmI am currently clarifying the copyright issues with Sasha Bell. It is very important for us to respect designer’s rights. We’ll certainly keep that in mind for the next month.
Darcy
December 3rd, 2010 6:12 amThe Bell sisters get featured every month because they are amazing artists. Smashing Magazine is a reputable site and is allowed to choose whom they want featured. I doubt they look at all the Bell girl’s work and try to pick at least three.Olivia, Rosanna and Sasha’s work is hardly similiar other than the last names of the artists. Let the girls to continue to create and wow us every month.
Olivia, Rosanna and Sasha am a huge fan and look forward to your new creations every month! Keep up the amazing work!
-Darcy

December 4th, 2010 11:19 amI feel like this is very immature and “unprofessional” … of all the people complaining. I don’t believe desktop wallpapers should be something to whine about. Maybe if you were PAYING for a Smashing Magazine subscription or something, but you’re not. Be thankful for what both SM and the Bell Sisters are doing. Stop being babies please.
I agree with Jonathan full heartedly.

November 30th, 2010 6:15 amI like this very idea of changing wallpapers every month and the smashing magazine gives the ammo for this creative weapon to us for free. Thanks for this, thanks to the artists for doing such impressive work and have a very happy christmas time out there.

December 2nd, 2010 5:46 amHi! I really like the results of your work! I know it’s not easy, I can’t even imagine how complex it is, but I was used to have a new wallpaper everyday, and a special one every month, so I miss it!
Thank you!
PS: By the way, wouldn’t you like to have a volunteer? I know nothing about it (I study Business Administration) but I enjoy it so much that I’m willing to learn! ;D

November 30th, 2010 11:58 amHi,
I’m from south america….and i’m always around this magazine….the articles are excellent…..but when it comes to monthly wallpaper collections………I don’t know…..I think more designers from south should submit wallpapers….there’s a lot of wallpapers about winter….but none about summer (we are in summer here…remember?)….
Thx anyway….
and sorry about my english…
Ria
December 1st, 2010 3:50 pmMy thoughts too! Our Christmas time is all about BBQs, beaches and sunbathing. I thought more people would have submitted from the south, or maybe they just don’t get accepted.
Wyle Keaton
November 30th, 2010 12:04 pmFun in the Snow is fun.
Inspiring Well is nice.
..and again with the Bells? Oi! It’s like that movie Groundhog’s Day only without the humor and sweet ending. Especially so because the one with the socks is merely a repeat from last month. I know – it’s been “illustrated”… now they’re ripping their OWN work off…
roaring50s
December 1st, 2010 9:52 amCould this be explained. Is the photography or illustration not the work of the calendar author/s? Have I been commending many of these artists for just using someone else’s freeware/artistry and designing a calendar on it. Hell, I could do that with the right software. If the photograph/illustration is the calendar creator’s, however, I sometimes think it or something similar could be used over and over again for different months.
I think the issue needs clarified. I really won’t participate if the artistry is not original to the calendar creator. I’ll make my own from what I find on the net.
Jonathan
December 1st, 2010 2:34 pmThat post is ridiculously libellous, and could actually pose a counter lawsuit for the girls.
You cannot wrap all three of the Bell sisters in one package; the mistake of one of them does not constitute for the defamation of the other two. Sasha is ONE person, not “The Bell Sisters”.
I recommend you change that post as the title is untrue and defamatory.
Laura
December 1st, 2010 5:13 pmThat post is nothing to do with me, I just feel for the artist(s) whose work is being used without permission or credit to generate publicity and profit for others. It’s nothing personal, and the Bell sisters are clearly talented – I really like a lot of their photography – this issue just rubs me up the wrong way :-/ Anyway, I’m going to let the matter drop now, sorry if I was too harsh.
Jonathan
December 1st, 2010 5:38 pmI appreciate the issue is contentious, I really do. As someone who deals with the Internet all the time, it’s not just visuals that people use without permission; code gets stolen frequently, but when others start dragging names through the snow (I thought it appropriate given the current weather conditions ;] – Just lightening the mood) it just gets awfully messy…
I think it’s also important to note that all “offending” artworks (if you want to call them that, I call them a mistake at best…) have been removed from all of the sites the bell sisters own, they are not selling them any further… All works henceforth are absolute works from the artists’ minds… I appreciate it’s SM’s responsibility to make sure that all work is the Copyright holders’.
When one continues to perpetuate an issue which has been settled, it harms all parties involved, not just those being accused.
Glad to see that it struck some chords, though, and I’m glad for your apology – I’m sure Sasha will be much more pleased to hear it than I.
Thanks for your response.
Wally
November 30th, 2010 12:16 pmAwsome job again guys, i look forward to this each month, if only people would submit more from Autralia, there is nothing like Xmas in the bush. I’ll have to put something togeather for Jan

November 30th, 2010 1:00 pmYum – on time this month! It has been difficult to decide for a favorite… I might swap it over half way through the month for some variety.
I first went for Khaos, but couldn’t find a version which was legible on my widescreen monitor, so I settled for “Inspiring Wall” by Peter Lee!
I also like “Frozen”, except that the calendar would be completely covered by my desktop icons, and “Burnout 2010″ – which will be my next choice for the second half of December… [I'm getting tired of the "Bell" family.]
Jenny
December 1st, 2010 1:18 pmYeah, one of the reasons I really dislike the way they continue to publish the Bell’s work is because they involve the same models half the time. I wouldn’t mind so much if it was a bit more varied!
CG
November 30th, 2010 1:54 pmwow… This series is the best of all! Love all of them!
And as usual, the Bells` wallpapers filling up my desktop for another month!
Keep it up guys! ^_^

November 30th, 2010 2:39 pm“New Santa – new gifts” will decorate my screen for the next month (or so). :-)

November 30th, 2010 2:44 pmLove-able, likable and enjoyable as always for last 11 months. Bit chilly yet festive and charming. Thumbs up to burn-out to show feel of 12th month. Time evaporates leaving memories behind. So wonderful.
Wish there would be some flashy Christmas lights with bright smiles filled wallpapers or some feel good warm milk – cookie kind sweeter feels occupied wallpapers , for this grand finale of the months.
Thanks a ton SmashingMagazine for these adorable wallpapers and all other great goodies. :)
See you in 2011 with January wallpapers…till then chill out. :)

November 30th, 2010 4:06 pmThese calendars showed up with Bells on!

November 30th, 2010 4:15 pmA lot of fine artistic works this month, but “Frosted Glass” is the only one I find fitting for a desktop. It has the overall simplicity that keeps it from being a distraction in a functional environment, with enough detail to make it interesting.

December 1st, 2010 12:22 amWhat’s with the Bell sisters? Are you going to put their stuff month after month after month?
Also do you realise that most of these wallpapers cannot actually be used as calendars? Nearly all of them have the calendar part written too small or placed behind icons.
I don’t know how you select these wallpapers but I found your standards dropping over the course of 2010.

December 1st, 2010 1:58 amBeautiful wallpapers. I think you should cover summer too since that’s the season in the southern hemisphere.
@Vitaly: Would blue/green illustrations out of Sasha Bell’s socks calender be regarded as legitimate work?

December 1st, 2010 1:59 amDecember Dream is very pretty BUT it doesn’t open properly so I can’t set it as a desktop background. I wonder what the problem is?

December 1st, 2010 5:34 amI really love a lot of these wallpapers for the design, but always find myself wishing that the artists would use more traditional calendar setups. If the calendar isn’t functional, it’s just pretty wallpaper.

December 1st, 2010 9:43 amThe Frosted Glass by Shawn Rinkenbaugh153 from United States is the most innovative conceptually. I await further like steamed glass, rainfall glass, endless glass… every month the concept could be done with different view themes…
