We always try our best to challenge your artistic abilities and produce some interesting, beautiful and creative artwork. And as designers we usually turn to different sources of inspiration. As a matter of fact, we’ve discovered the best one — desktop wallpapers that are a little more distinctive than the usual crowd. This creativity mission has been going on for almost two years now, and we are very thankful to all designers who have contributed and are still diligently contributing each month.

As the new year begins, we will continue to nourish you with a monthly spoon of inspiration for the next 12 months. This post features 65 free desktop wallpapers created by artists across the globe for January 2011. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free. It’s time to freshen up your wallpaper!

Please note that:

  • You can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our Desktop Wallpaper Calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?

    This is terrible!
I know this is not “constructive criticism” but this is how I see it. I clicked “dislike” on every piece, because there’s nothing here I wish to see on my desktop.
You should emphasize on quality over quantity. There are maybe one or two noteworthy designs here but they’re overwhelmed by the massive crap pile.

I am not a troll, I bought your Smashing Book but… as days go by, I see this website worse and worse. And it’s a pity, because there’s also good content here…

    • 13

I completely agree with this, there is not even a single creative one! Thumb down [SM]

      -16
    • 14

Most are very good, some even very good, but there are also ones who are just plain bad!
The party of 2011, thats not happy! Not to mention the crappy quality, I have seen better ones.

Good to see most are brilliant and very beautiful.
      Happy new year everybody.

      5
    • 15

It’s not easy to say this in a nice way. But the vast bulk of this collection is very far from being of any real artistic or creative value. Most of it is really embarassing.

      18
    • 16

I agree. Usually I’m always able to find a couple that I really like in each month’s calendar collection, but despite there being 65 to choose from, there were only a few quality ones (severely restricting my choices), and the rest were…well, disappointing. I was very surprised to see 2 Drupal 7 calendars on here as well. I find myself asking, why would any non-Drupal user be interested in this?

      9
    • 17

I agree. I think i just put 2 positive rates this “month”:)

      2
  11. 18

I think they are all pretty. However, I don’t like the thumbs up, thumbs down feature. It’s rude.

    22
    • 19

I agree. People are really abusing this feature with their bitchiness.

      21
    • 20

I agree….People seem to be abusing “thumbs down”.. :(

      21
      • 21

Definitely… I guess that’s why Facebook only have “like”! Spread the love…

        16
      • 23

What makes you so sure people are abusing the “thumbs down” button? Did you ever stop to think (now this is going to sound totally crazy) that maybe, just maybe, the designs just aren’t that strong? Who do you know who has time to just jump on Smashing Magazine and hit all the thumbs down buttons for fun? Something tells me that (even if they’re “rude”) if the design is done well enough, folks are going to hit the thumbs up button. Am I missing something here?

        12
    • 24

I’m sorry, but what a bunch of whiny babies :)

If you don’t want your work criticized, then don’t submit a wallpaper. Criticism is an extremely important piece of becoming a better designer. Removing the “thumbs down” just so the designer can “feel better” is only a way to let individuals continue on with the delusion that there designs are good. Whether it “feels good” or not is irrelevant, the truth of the matter is what counts, whether we “like” it or not.

SM: Please do NOT do this great dis-service to growing the talent of designers by removing the thumbs down!

      15
  12. 25

My favourite is Twisted Winter. No doubt! Happy New Year!

    5
  13. 27

Ah, I wish I hadn’t been so busy this month, I’d have loved to design a wallpaper for January! In any case, a wonderful selection here. My personal favourite is “Door to a New Year”.

Congrats on an awesome year Smashing Team, and a Happy New Year to all =]

    5
  14. 28

My fav was “Silver Winter”. Thanks so much to everyone who posts these wonderful wallpapers! Also noted — the new rating system in place now.

I love many of the designs each month. Some months I use more than one. Thanks for the desktop wallpaper calendars! Love it!!

    3
  15. 29

But for two by my view, all the rest are simply lacking in creativity and “new” or “fresh” vision/eye. Not to be too harsh, but a 5-year old could have come up with as simple scenes, settings, graphics and images and used a vtech camera and done as well as almost all of these. Nice that SM has so many selections, though, keep that up. The vote up/down opportunity on the submissions is an excellent feature. Now for ability to make comment on each one in addition to below the fold would be much appreciated.

Winter light and frozen world could have captured so much more in my opinion. There’s promise there, but neither delivered for me this time around.

Snow goggles and Frost bitten could have been exceptional, but are just not all that. sorry there’s something there, but little risk-taking.
the two with a unique vision:

Thank you for commenting on ‘Frozen World’. Will try to challenge myself much more next time.

In my opinion, ‘Symbol of Love’ has a good idea, but has become too eclectic. Mixing cultures and styles is never easy, so thumbs up for the effort :-)

My personal favourite is Sasha Bell’s ‘Winter’s Warmth’. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for the comment! I appreciate it. One of my favorites, though, is “Winter Light” by Nathalie Ouederni. Beautiful colors!

I came here every month to take a wallpaper and use it on my laptop, but this month I see thumbs and I don’t like it because I think that detract merit to the aportation of each one of the contributors. For me every one of the wallpapers it’s beutiful and I dont think that put “like” or “dislike” it’s correct, thats my appreciation.

Thank you for make my laptop happy… and I wish you a very very happy New Year 2011.

I’d probably suggest only allowing rating up, just like on Behance.

    7
  21. 41

i’ve used this site every month.. but this has got to be the WORST selection i have ever seen… i understand being creative with the “calendar”.. but some of us like the standard, Sunday on the left, Saturday on the right.

    1
    • 42

The standard calendar format varies between countries. For example, here in the UK the Monday to Sunday calendar is more usual.

  28. 53

    happy new year ;)
i like the idea of yeah or nay from the standpoint of the observer, but i’m not so sure i’d like a lot of nay votes :(
could it just be yeah? then maybe the designer would not feel bad …
    anyway :)
lovely choices, i made one also, but did not send it in – it takes me a long time to make 5 diff resolutions : /
thanks for always giving us some nice things to look at!

“A Door to a New Year” is simple but significant.

Wow there are so many wonderful wallpapers this month – great to ring in the new year with these lovely backgrounds!
I downloaded eight to choose from, one of them – the Tea and Tiles – I downloaded that to base my kitchen remodel on, so not really to use as a wallpaper!
Hello 2011 and then Twisted Winter would have to be my favorites. Hello 2011 is the one I am using *right now*.

Happy new year to the world!

The people who hated on the calendars should submit something of their own and see how bad they get bashed!

Thank you for featuring my wallpaper!

It’s not bashing to offer constructive criticism to the designer/artist. I’ve said before anyone could go a few steps out of their residence and capture a closeup image and squeeze on a linear calendar. I view smashing as receiving something more than that. Most times they do. I don’t think the thumbs up or thumbs down is actually sufficient, alone. There should be a comment section right beneath each so praise can be heaped on or not. If that were in place, I’d have found something in each I could like, but I still would have opportunity to explain what was not liked or appreciated. For instance, not picking on this one, but New Life just didn’t deliver for the theme of the New Year. Yet, the promise is there in the juxtaposition of the year 2010 and 2011. The scene presents shadings of green and yellow surrounding both whereas 2010 should be disappearing if not appearing to shrink out of focus. Not attempting to ‘bash’ Symbol of Love, either. To most, I would think, love is not ‘surrounded’ by darkness. Love is light and one is lighthearted in love. What exactly in the design expresses hope for the world coming together when there is only one man standing alone? Maybe if the hot air ballon had a few tiny faces peeking out that would have added to the theme. The constructive criticism would include offering something like this: a touch of darkness somewhere with a symbol or two of war and hate, then gradations of light getting ever lighter as mankind reaches its full potential for peace and love. the theme for the New Year, casting off the misery in the world (we create ourselves) was excellent, the delivery not so much. I don’t mean to heart the artist’s feelings here, but Snow Walk to me just seemed a bit over the top. the poor dog didn’t even have ‘snow socks’ on its paws, and rather than looking free and awed in the new snow of the New Year, like my Siberian Husky always looked first time out, this little one looks pained. Had the designer captured a rare pawprint outside the deck that would have been awesome.

      5
  38. 66

Thanks for the effort people. 6 of the above appeal to me, possibly a record in the past few months.

I would say that the quality actually improved this time round. Keep this going SM – and for those who submitted wallpapers, don’t be daunted by the thumbs-down!

    5
  39. 67

Tea & Tiles! Love it — wish the calendar was horizontal/linear instead of a block, but that’s just being picky. :)

I loved Silent Winter and Winter Fun. I saved several more for later in the month but those two were my favorites.

I agree with most others writing today, please do away with the “thumbs down”. There are way too many reasons to push that button that have nothing to do with the charm of the wallpaper and it becomes hurtful instead of helpful.

I love the Frozen World. Wait, I will give my thumbs-up vote first :D

  52. 81

Wow, thanks for posting so many! Lots to choose from. Glad Win7 has automatic rotation of wallpaper!

It makes me feel sad to see people hating on the entries. I clicked on several thumbs up, but I don’t see any point in clicking thumbs down. Maybe you should just list how many downloads each one had.

  53. 82

Thank you,Vitaly! Do you a wonderful Website. Do not get tired wonder your talent. Happy New Year!

Jax I’m glad you like my wallapaper – I can email you this wallpaper in a resolution you need :)

  55. 85

The photos taken by Olivia and Sasha Bell take absolutely no talent or effort whatsoever. All of their sites are themes as well. I’m not trolling, i’m just saying they just take random photos, put some effects on them and somehow get a place into SM’s post.

    10
    • 86

You’re right, I noticed that a long time ago. However, many believe that the Bell sisters are excellent photographers. If you’ll do a bit of research, you’ll find that there are serious accusations of Sasha copying someone else’s work, and blatantly at that.

  57. 88

    Good… compilation…. Like that Drupal 7 Wallpapers … Also Happy New Year 2011 ..

    2
  58. 89

Why is the SmashingMag logo appearing on every one of them? If anything, it should be the original artists who deserve to have their name/brand on there.

AFAIK, there is no contractual agreement made between SM and the artists (I’ve checked the upload form), which receive no compensation for their work (other than a link, which ought to be a given, and not a favor) to begin with.
If I’m missing something here (other than “free exposure”, which, again…), please point it out in due manner.

I’m a big fan of this site, but that kind of crowd-sourcing/product placement seriously ticks me off.

    Albert

Brad Cerasani: you just made my whole day. one of the prettiest iron & wine tunes around. :)

    2
  62. 95

I recommend SM team to leave thumbs up and remove thumbs down.
There is no need to offend a wallpaper designer with thumb down if one did not like.
It is also interesting to show rank of wallpaper according to the number of thumbs up.

    5
  63. 97

Some people thumb down for no reason. There are many kind of people out there. Sometimes it can be a hate or even jealousy, those with big egos etc. Thumbs up and down are ways people either choose to use fairly or abuse.
In this case, I’m all for either removing both thumbs or only keeping the positive thumb.
Wouldn’t it be clearly seen if one gets 10 thumbs up and another 100 thumbs up that the latter is much better?

    3
  64. 98

Today I am sadly retiring December’s “Starleaves” which was so beautiful to view each day. Now, I have fallen for “Twisted Winter” by Colin Oakes of Canada. This is now my daily January Love. I was surprised to notice the thumbs up/down feature as I don’t recall seeing that in the past. I could never “thumbs down” any artistic endeavor! Thanks to ALL the artists for their offerings! Happy New Year!

Thanks a lot for choosing “Twisted Winter” as your January Wallpaper Mary, I really appreciate it.

I am for keeping thumbs up.
Better to vote then saying “I liked such and such wallpapers” on comments.

Lost in Winter’s Fog is the best

    1
  69. 105

The logos in the middle of the wallpapers really detracts. Why would I want a tacky advertisement for Smashing Magazine on my desktop, detracting from a lovely wallpaper?

    1
  70. 106

I am disappointed. I always try to find something inspirational and there’s nothing here.

    LUMANTI from NEPAL. I LIKE.

    Thanks for the feature Smashing!

    2
  74. 110

I’m going to be super creative and switch the grid of Sunday-Saturday to a Monday-Sunday grid, or yet better, just put all the dates in one row without the 7-column grid.

While I’m at it, I want to re-design the automobile wheels to be a pentagon cause it will be “creative” and “out-of-the-box” and design homes that have 5 ft ceilings because it’s “out there”.

Those are fucking useless modifications that ruin the usability of otherwise beautiful artwork.

    -6
    • 111

Most calendars in Europe start Monday as the first day. Creativity has nothing to do with it.

      2
  75. 112

If you feature content like “Happy 2011″, how are we supposed to believe anything you say about design? Now this person can say “I was featured in Smashing Magazine”. Do you really want that?
    :(

When I started to scroll through the top section all I thought was “Oh my God – so much Winter and snow and frost – - – get me out of here!” (In the southern hemisphere it’s SUMMER right now!!) – but then there were quite a few nice ones further down :D

I downloaded ‘Silent Love’ for the first half of the month.

Favorites on grounds of simplicity and neutral tone, making them most suitable for desktop wallpaper : “Drupal 7 is coming” and “Smashing Magazine 2011″.

Lovely collections. Loved the “Lumanti” typography.

Really great calendar wallpaper. I have personally hand picked them into collection of 50 wallpaper and uploaded on my sites in a single file. So, you don’t have to trouble yourself to download this wallpaper one after one.

It is mediafire download link =)

    Really nice once again.

Anyway to get an archive for all those calendar each month ? So we don’t have to clic each picture to get them ? (maybe 1 big archive for all resolutions, or X archives for each one)

Just wanted to chime in and say that although some of the photography ones don’t take as long to ‘design’, they’re my favs. I really liked quite a few in this batch! Thanks!

    Vey nice post, thank you

    Icy Tree Smashing. Awesome

  100. 138

Excellent collection. I love the monthly wallpapers – they are so inspiring. As a graphic designer, I love being able to catch a glimpse of my desktop in between projects and gain inspiration from another artist.

One suggestion though, can all of the files be assembled into one zip file each month for download? I generally download them all and have them rotate all month. It would be so much easier to have all the files in one download each month. Thanks for considering the suggestion.

    1
  101. 139

just an awesome post…thanks for the share!!!!

    2
  102. 140

How many more months in a row will the Bells be featured for? I’m getting rather tired of seeing the same sorts of pictures from them month in month out!

    3
  103. 141

My favourite this month is definitely Silver Winter – love it! I also like Lost In Winter’s Fog.

    0
  104. 142

I like this batch, especially since 1/5th of it isn’t reserved for the banal, repetitive work of the Bell sisters. Plz bring back thumbs down, I’d love to see some actual statistics as to how many people like and dislike each :)

    1
  105. 143

I think all the designs are great. Sometimes less is more. I’m sure this is the first feature for many of these artists, myself included (“Hello 2011″). Constructive criticism is fine, but if you’re only going to badmouth us and say that they all suck, then go tell it to your mother, because no one else cares to hear it.
Good job everyone. The negative comments probably only came from people who’s designs were rejected.

    3
  106. 144

  109. 147

Some really cool designs but they’re mostly focused on the northern hemisphere… In the South, January is actually a scorching hot month & it just doesn’t feel right to put up a wintery pic.. Otw some really great designs :)

    1
  110. 148

It would be sooo nice to use some of the wallpaper but I have so many icons on my desktop I woludn’t see them :( Long live my good old blue background. Good job, designers :)

There are many beautiful, but for my desktop I’ve chosen “Frozen World”

    1
  113. 151

Little Gizmo and Winter’s Fog were my favorites. I think these were better than December so I guess I’m in the minority here. Most of these would be beyond my abilities either technically or creatively so I can’t complain, great job everyone!

    1
  114. 152

My favorite is “A Handy New Year,” but it doesn’t fit my screen size.

I went with my second favorite, “Lost in Winter’s Fog.” Great selection this month!

  132. 172

i think creepy forest was my favorite. would have loved to see some brighter stuff through here though- i feel like 2011 is going to such a bright time! sad seeming cozy winter scenes don’t really match how i’m feeling about this year so far, or do much to motivate me while i work around my desktop. i’m always grateful for the smashing picks each month, though, i have fun finding a desktop image for every month. hasta luego web-loving peeps, and happy new year to you!

Found about a half dozen that suit my tastes. I especially like the racing strip one (One/2011) near the beginning.

But I am always annoyed by the Smashing logo. I don’t want the logo on my desktop and find it utterly unnecessary to include it on the wallpapers. Why not treat your loyal visitors by giving them logo-less wallpapers? Furthermore, sometimes the logo is really big, or poorly placed (such as on Frozen World).

“Winter Light” was my favorite calendar for January. I check each month to pick which will go on my two monitors. What a creative and useful idea – Many people have been introduced to your site because of it.

    Thanks!

  141. 182

Nice collection…I hadn’t had a chance (outta town, pc down, etc.) to get to these before now. Dl’d (and ‘thumbed up’ those)…enough to rotate a new one every hour of the day. Always surprised when so many chosen for smashing are simple photographs, even if lovely (though they do represent a large fraction of my dl’s). Would love to see more 3d-modeled ones. Interesting to see which ones have >/= (less than or equal) ~100 votes (some of my fave and least fave ones…these must be very ‘niche’); ones with more votes I mostly agree with, but not universally. Thanks again for all your work; another ‘smashing’ collection!

I like the ones without snow, and my faces are Hazy Dawn and Tea and Tiles. Nice work!

Thanks so much for these monthly calendars. For January, I’m using “New Year, New Goals” for its clean design and its calendar which starts on Sunday. I always choose the nicest design that’s got a traditional calendar beginning with Sunday and ending with Saturday. :-)
