December 31st, 2010 8:24 amThis is terrible!
I know this is not “constructive criticism” but this is how I see it. I clicked “dislike” on every piece, because there’s nothing here I wish to see on my desktop.
You should emphasize on quality over quantity. There are maybe one or two noteworthy designs here but they’re overwhelmed by the massive crap pile.
I am not a troll, I bought your Smashing Book but… as days go by, I see this website worse and worse. And it’s a pity, because there’s also good content here…

December 31st, 2010 9:42 amI completely agree with this, there is not even a single creative one! Thumb down [SM]

January 1st, 2011 2:34 amMost are very good, some even very good, but there are also ones who are just plain bad!
The party of 2011, thats not happy! Not to mention the crappy quality, I have seen better ones.
Good to see most are brilliant and very beautiful.
Happy new year everybody.

January 1st, 2011 9:31 amIt’s not easy to say this in a nice way. But the vast bulk of this collection is very far from being of any real artistic or creative value. Most of it is really embarassing.
Jenny
January 1st, 2011 11:13 amI agree. Usually I’m always able to find a couple that I really like in each month’s calendar collection, but despite there being 65 to choose from, there were only a few quality ones (severely restricting my choices), and the rest were…well, disappointing. I was very surprised to see 2 Drupal 7 calendars on here as well. I find myself asking, why would any non-Drupal user be interested in this?

January 1st, 2011 11:22 amI agree. I think i just put 2 positive rates this “month”:)

December 31st, 2010 8:27 amI think they are all pretty. However, I don’t like the thumbs up, thumbs down feature. It’s rude.
Rick
December 31st, 2010 8:53 amI agree. People are really abusing this feature with their bitchiness.

December 31st, 2010 9:44 amI agree….People seem to be abusing “thumbs down”.. :(

January 1st, 2011 12:39 amI agree. Just a thumbs up will do.
Common Sense
January 1st, 2011 2:54 pmWhat makes you so sure people are abusing the “thumbs down” button? Did you ever stop to think (now this is going to sound totally crazy) that maybe, just maybe, the designs just aren’t that strong? Who do you know who has time to just jump on Smashing Magazine and hit all the thumbs down buttons for fun? Something tells me that (even if they’re “rude”) if the design is done well enough, folks are going to hit the thumbs up button. Am I missing something here?
Common Sense
January 1st, 2011 1:25 pmI’m sorry, but what a bunch of whiny babies :)
If you don’t want your work criticized, then don’t submit a wallpaper. Criticism is an extremely important piece of becoming a better designer. Removing the “thumbs down” just so the designer can “feel better” is only a way to let individuals continue on with the delusion that there designs are good. Whether it “feels good” or not is irrelevant, the truth of the matter is what counts, whether we “like” it or not.
SM: Please do NOT do this great dis-service to growing the talent of designers by removing the thumbs down!
Martin

December 31st, 2010 8:51 amBut for two by my view, all the rest are simply lacking in creativity and “new” or “fresh” vision/eye. Not to be too harsh, but a 5-year old could have come up with as simple scenes, settings, graphics and images and used a vtech camera and done as well as almost all of these. Nice that SM has so many selections, though, keep that up. The vote up/down opportunity on the submissions is an excellent feature. Now for ability to make comment on each one in addition to below the fold would be much appreciated.
Winter light and frozen world could have captured so much more in my opinion. There’s promise there, but neither delivered for me this time around.
Snow goggles and Frost bitten could have been exceptional, but are just not all that. sorry there’s something there, but little risk-taking.

In my opinion, ‘Symbol of Love’ has a good idea, but has become too eclectic. Mixing cultures and styles is never easy, so thumbs up for the effort :-)

December 31st, 2010 9:43 amI came here every month to take a wallpaper and use it on my laptop, but this month I see thumbs and I don’t like it because I think that detract merit to the aportation of each one of the contributors. December 31st, 2010 10:45 ami’ve used this site every month.. but this has got to be the WORST selection i have ever seen… i understand being creative with the “calendar”.. but some of us like the standard, Sunday on the left, Saturday on the right.

i like the idea of yeah or nay from the standpoint of the observer, but i’m not so sure i’d like a lot of nay votes :(
could it just be yeah? then maybe the designer would not feel bad …

December 31st, 2010 4:35 pmWow there are so many wonderful wallpapers this month – great to ring in the new year with these lovely backgrounds!
I downloaded eight to choose from, one of them – the Tea and Tiles – I downloaded that to base my kitchen remodel on, so not really to use as a wallpaper!

January 3rd, 2011 5:36 amIt’s not bashing to offer constructive criticism to the designer/artist. I’ve said before anyone could go a few steps out of their residence and capture a closeup image and squeeze on a linear calendar. I view smashing as receiving something more than that. Most times they do. I don’t think the thumbs up or thumbs down is actually sufficient, alone. There should be a comment section right beneath each so praise can be heaped on or not. If that were in place, I’d have found something in each I could like, but I still would have opportunity to explain what was not liked or appreciated. For instance, not picking on this one, but New Life just didn’t deliver for the theme of the New Year. Yet, the promise is there in the juxtaposition of the year 2010 and 2011. The scene presents shadings of green and yellow surrounding both whereas 2010 should be disappearing if not appearing to shrink out of focus. Not attempting to ‘bash’ Symbol of Love, either. To most, I would think, love is not ‘surrounded’ by darkness. Love is light and one is lighthearted in love. What exactly in the design expresses hope for the world coming together when there is only one man standing alone? Maybe if the hot air ballon had a few tiny faces peeking out that would have added to the theme. The constructive criticism would include offering something like this: a touch of darkness somewhere with a symbol or two of war and hate, then gradations of light getting ever lighter as mankind reaches its full potential for peace and love. the theme for the New Year, casting off the misery in the world (we create ourselves) was excellent, the delivery not so much. I don’t mean to heart the artist’s feelings here, but Snow Walk to me just seemed a bit over the top. the poor dog didn’t even have ‘snow socks’ on its paws, and rather than looking free and awed in the new snow of the New Year, like my Siberian Husky always looked first time out, this little one looks pained. Had the designer captured a rare pawprint outside the deck that would have been awesome.

December 31st, 2010 7:54 pmThanks for the effort people. 6 of the above appeal to me, possibly a record in the past few months.
I would say that the quality actually improved this time round. Keep this going SM – and for those who submitted wallpapers, don’t be daunted by the thumbs-down!

January 1st, 2011 9:31 amI loved Silent Winter and Winter Fun. I saved several more for later in the month but those two were my favorites.
I agree with most others writing today, please do away with the “thumbs down”. There are way too many reasons to push that button that have nothing to do with the charm of the wallpaper and it becomes hurtful instead of helpful.

January 1st, 2011 9:39 amI love the Frozen World. Wait, I will give my thumbs-up vote first :D

January 1st, 2011 9:51 amWow, thanks for posting so many! Lots to choose from. Glad Win7 has automatic rotation of wallpaper!
It makes me feel sad to see people hating on the entries. I clicked on several thumbs up, but I don’t see any point in clicking thumbs down. Maybe you should just list how many downloads each one had.

January 1st, 2011 10:23 amThe photos taken by Olivia and Sasha Bell take absolutely no talent or effort whatsoever. All of their sites are themes as well. I’m not trolling, i’m just saying they just take random photos, put some effects on them and somehow get a place into SM’s post.
Sid
January 12th, 2011 3:43 amYou’re right, I noticed that a long time ago. However, many believe that the Bell sisters are excellent photographers. If you’ll do a bit of research, you’ll find that there are serious accusations of Sasha copying someone else’s work, and blatantly at that.

January 1st, 2011 11:19 amGood… compilation…. Like that Drupal 7 Wallpapers … Also Happy New Year 2011 ..
Albert
January 1st, 2011 11:43 amWhy is the SmashingMag logo appearing on every one of them? If anything, it should be the original artists who deserve to have their name/brand on there.
AFAIK, there is no contractual agreement made between SM and the artists (I’ve checked the upload form), which receive no compensation for their work (other than a link, which ought to be a given, and not a favor) to begin with.
If I’m missing something here (other than “free exposure”, which, again…), please point it out in due manner.
I’m a big fan of this site, but that kind of crowd-sourcing/product placement seriously ticks me off.

January 1st, 2011 1:10 pmI recommend SM team to leave thumbs up and remove thumbs down.
There is no need to offend a wallpaper designer with thumb down if one did not like.
It is also interesting to show rank of wallpaper according to the number of thumbs up.
Vitaly Friedman
January 2nd, 2011 2:17 am“Thumbs down” was removed. Thanks for the feedback, guys!
A.
January 1st, 2011 2:29 pmSome people thumb down for no reason. There are many kind of people out there. Sometimes it can be a hate or even jealousy, those with big egos etc. Thumbs up and down are ways people either choose to use fairly or abuse.
In this case, I’m all for either removing both thumbs or only keeping the positive thumb.
Wouldn’t it be clearly seen if one gets 10 thumbs up and another 100 thumbs up that the latter is much better?

January 1st, 2011 2:47 pmToday I am sadly retiring December’s “Starleaves” which was so beautiful to view each day. Now, I have fallen for “Twisted Winter” by Colin Oakes of Canada. This is now my daily January Love. I was surprised to notice the thumbs up/down feature as I don’t recall seeing that in the past. I could never “thumbs down” any artistic endeavor! Thanks to ALL the artists for their offerings! Happy New Year!
Colin Oakes
January 5th, 2011 3:20 pmThanks a lot for choosing “Twisted Winter” as your January Wallpaper Mary, I really appreciate it.

January 1st, 2011 2:51 pmI am for keeping thumbs up.

January 1st, 2011 6:03 pmThe logos in the middle of the wallpapers really detracts. Why would I want a tacky advertisement for Smashing Magazine on my desktop, detracting from a lovely wallpaper?

January 1st, 2011 8:08 pmI am disappointed. I always try to find something inspirational and there’s nothing here.

January 2nd, 2011 12:51 amI’m going to be super creative and switch the grid of Sunday-Saturday to a Monday-Sunday grid, or yet better, just put all the dates in one row without the 7-column grid.
While I’m at it, I want to re-design the automobile wheels to be a pentagon cause it will be “creative” and “out-of-the-box” and design homes that have 5 ft ceilings because it’s “out there”.
Those are fucking useless modifications that ruin the usability of otherwise beautiful artwork.
A.
January 2nd, 2011 5:39 amMost calendars in Europe start Monday as the first day. Creativity has nothing to do with it.

January 2nd, 2011 3:31 amIf you feature content like “Happy 2011″, how are we supposed to believe anything you say about design? Now this person can say “I was featured in Smashing Magazine”. Do you really want that?
:(

January 2nd, 2011 4:28 pmWhen I started to scroll through the top section all I thought was “Oh my God – so much Winter and snow and frost – - – get me out of here!” (In the southern hemisphere it’s SUMMER right now!!) – but then there were quite a few nice ones further down :D
I downloaded ‘Silent Love’ for the first half of the month.

Anyway to get an archive for all those calendar each month ? So we don’t have to clic each picture to get them ? (maybe 1 big archive for all resolutions, or X archives for each one)

January 3rd, 2011 11:30 amExcellent collection. I love the monthly wallpapers – they are so inspiring. As a graphic designer, I love being able to catch a glimpse of my desktop in between projects and gain inspiration from another artist.
One suggestion though, can all of the files be assembled into one zip file each month for download? I generally download them all and have them rotate all month. It would be so much easier to have all the files in one download each month. Thanks for considering the suggestion.
