Upcoming Conferences and Events for Designers and Developers in 2011

We’re well into 2011, and many designers and developers around the world are planning their travels for the year, including the possibility of attending any Web design or development conferences. To help you out with your plans for the upcoming months, we’ve put together a list of conferences and events that you might want to consider.

This particular post covers events taking place in about a six month timeframe that ends in late August and early September. Later this year, we’ll post another article like this at the end of August that will cover events covering a six-month period beginning in September.

As always, there is no way for us to be able to include every possible event here, but we’ll be glad to update the list if you provide a comment to an upcoming event that you feel would be of interest to Smashing Magazine’s readers. This may also be the chance to eventually meet each other1 this year.

  1. 1

wow thanks smashing magazine, really nice events in this post :O!

  2. 2

Hey guys nice article… but what about OFFF2011 (starts in june) Ive been to the previous one in Paris. A must go for design-lovers and creative geeks

    http://www.offf.ws/2011

  3. 3

Solid list. Looking forward to quite a few of them.

If I could humbly suggest you add Breaking Development in Dallas on April 10 and 11th to the list. It’s another solid event for anyone interested in design or development for the mobile web with a great speaker lineup and catered meals – http://breakingdc.com

  4. 4

As for conferences that might be interesting for the Smashing folk: http://codeconf.com/ http://brooklynbeta.org/ and http://atmedia11.webdirections.org/ (Courtesy of http://raditya.nl/events)

  5. 5

You missed Designer/Developer Workflow Conference in Kansas City http://d2wc.com

  6. 6

Nice List, weird choice for the quote for the UXcamp Europe thou

  7. 7

Also check out Nordic Ruby, June 16-18 in Gothenburg, Sweden – http://nordicruby.org

  8. 8

What about OFFF in Barcelona in June?

Why are the YAPC’s not listed?

  10. 10

What an awesome list. I’m new to the Interaction Design field and these conferences would be a great help. So many to choose from. Thanks. I’m going to SXSW for sure. Already got my ticket.

  11. 11

Nice post Smash, is hopefully going to attend the “Make Web Not War” in early may if there’s any possible way that it fits my schedule :(

  12. 12

This is an awesome list, many thanks for that; sure beats having to search them one by one. :)

  13. 13

Thanks for a great list, wish I could attend more conferences over the year but this year i will be going to SXSW, really looking forward to it. Then it will be Frontend2011.com in October for me here in Norway.

  14. 14

I will visit the http://jandbeyond.org/ Joomla conference in Kerkrade (May 6th – 8th) and the german Joomladay 2011 in Hamburg (September 2nd and 3rd).

  15. 15

Waiting until august to post about conferences in September? Would be more helpful to post that article much sooner…

    • 16

But where do we draw the line? If we post in July to announce August+, then that makes the August events short notice. If we post in June to announce July+, then that makes the July events short notice…. and so on… It’s impossible to have posts like this without excluding someone. Since the events usually start to pick up in the spring and fall, I think February and August posts are probably the best option.

I suggest those who want to stay more up to date and have plenty of time to plan should check out Lanyrd (http://lanyrd.com).

      • 17

You overlap the posts of course! You cover Feb-Aug in Feb. Then in June, you cover July – end of the year.

        • 18

Yes, I considered that solution, but then we run the risk of looking biased because we list certain events more than once.

But I’ll think about that for the next one, thanks for the suggestion.

  16. 19

Don’t forget about Word Camp SF 2011! http://2011.sf.wordcamp.org/

  17. 20

There’s a WordCamp in Miami on March 5th – probably too late to add to the list, but nice if you live in the area or need to get away from the cold/snow. Mark Jaquith and Andrew Nacin confirmed (2 Core WordPress developers) along with other core developers and speakers from various parts of the country. Was a sold out event last year.

    http://www.wordcampmiami.com

  18. 21

I’ve been waiting for this post! thanks a lot guys!!

  19. 22

The Eyeo Festival will be massive, sold out in 5 days, and should really be on this list:

    http://www.eyeofestival.com/

  20. 23

This list mainly covers conferences in the Americas and Europe.

If your in the Middle East around late March, there’s ArabNet Shift 2011 covering the developments of the region http://arabnet.me/

  21. 24

Great list, but you should also include the The 2011 Print and ePublishing Conference in Washington DC, USA
    May 23–25, 2011

    http://indesignsecretslive.com/conference.html

  22. 25

It should be noted that Google I/O is already sold out, so it might not be best to have it on this list (or at least have something there saying that it’s sold out).

  23. 26

Great start. Thanks for everyone filling in the ones that were missed. Maybe this would be better suited as a living document that everyone can contribute to?

  24. 27

“New Castle” should actually be “Newcastle upon Tyne”. Just sayin…

    • 28

You’re absolutely right. Thanks — fixed.

      • 29

        Andy Reid-McGlinn

        February 15, 2011 3:29 am

If you want to be even more accurate, you shouldn’t mention Newcastle at all. The Sage is in Gateshead (and was paid for by their council): a separate town altogether.

Or, you could go the council sanctioned route and call it (the vaguely embarrassing) NewcastleGateshead which covers the whole region.

Either way, having missed out last year, I’m hoping to go!

  25. 30

Thanks for this list Smashing. It would be great to get to SXSW, but I’ll probably go to a couple of events in Europe instead. I attended Frontend2010, and will attend Frontend2011 for sure (not on the list).

  26. 31

Photoshop World 2011… Yeah, I’ll be there

  27. 32

Don’t forget the Confoo conference happening in Montreal: http://confoo.ca/en

  28. 33

  29. 34

    Great web design inspiration!

  30. 35

Don’t forget superconf, a startup conference in Miami Feb 25/26: http://superconf.net

  31. 36

I’ll be at Mix11. There will be two bootcamp sessions, including two sessions on, respectively, HTML5/CSS3 and jQuery. Joe Marini is doing the jQuery one. And I’m going to both…oh yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  32. 37

There is a Design Festival in Costa Rica on March 10, 11, 12 it´s called FID (Festival Internacional de Diseño 2011), you should take a look.

    http://fidcr.com/

  33. 38

    Anyone going to Dibi?

  34. 39

For God’s sake! When should I work? All this great events, I don’t want to miss any of them.

  35. 41

Thanks for this massive list of beautiful conferences!

There is a brand new conference in the Netherlands. “Ready to Inspire” is a web conference about web design, type & code and will be held on November, 30 – December, 1 in Leiden, The Netherlands. check http://inspireconf.com

  36. 42

And don’t forget WEBSTOCK http://www.webstock.org.nz. It’s HUGE and on NOW in Wellington, New Zealand

  37. 43

Might be worth putting the cost alongside the When and Where details as some of these seem eye-wateringly expensive. Depending on how deep your pockets are of course. And I’ve got mine stitched up at the moment.

  38. 44

Great list! For those web designers who want to step outside their comfort zone and get inspired by designers from other disciplines, I suggest Gravity Free: http://www.GravityFreeDesign.com

  39. 45

Great List! I Hope Smashing Magazine can keep doing these posts more often! :) Thanks!

  40. 46

Gah! I wish more conferences were closer to me, like in DC or something. I can’t afford to fly all over the world at the moment… at least not yet:)

  41. 47

Great collection, The Big M in Bath is only down the road from us @ Clip Display

Thanks for putting this together, these events are really worth highlighting, great resource for inspiring employees and learning new things.

Now to cheekily ask my boss if I can attend one!!

  42. 48

  48. 54

D2W is in July. 14th is the hands-on classes, July 15-16 is the 2-day conference. Downtown KC http://D2WC.com and http://lanyrd.com/2011/d2wc/ is the URL for Lanyrd. D2W is a designer/developer/mobile workflow conference. All sessions center around workflow, whether between designer/developer or between applications. Mobile is new this year. We have a ton of awesome speakers. Plus it is priced right. Only $295 for the 2-day, $295 for the hands-on, or $445 for all 3 days.

  49. 55

    Also from the folks (of whom I am one, LOL) who do 360|Flex;

Oops, missed the part about this list ending in September. Sorry about that!

    360|iDev – September 11-14 – Denver, CO http://360idev.com
    360|MacDev – November 4-5 Denver, CO http://360macdev.com
