Things Are Looking Up

"I was shooting a wedding and was searching for perfect light. I convinced my bride and groom to keep climbing up to the top of the mountain we were on, as soon as we crested the summit the shy sun was waiting for us and the sky burst alive. It was perfect. The early fall sun was headed back south and the air had that slight crisp to it. Winter was coming but not here yet. The very moment the groom saw the landscape in front of him unfold, he quietly spoke to his new bride “things are looking up”. She giggled a laugh only a newlywed could. Keep your head up – things are looking up." Designed by Las Vegas Wedding Photographers121 from USA.

Pyre In The Sky

"With September comes the distinctive feeling that Summer is over and Winter is fast approaching. But in the East Coast, Fall translates into a glorious palette of brilliant warm tones burnished oranges, yellows, reds as the leaves change color. It is as if the lazy, hazy remanents of Summer are being vanquished by a pyre in the sky." Designed by Jen Cheng208 from Canada.

She was internally decapitated, broke her lower back, pelvis and all the ribs on one side. Doctors thought she wouldn’t make it through the night for she lay on an 8 inch broken bottle for over 8 hours before being discovered. She is steadily recovering and proved the doctors wrong in that she not only walked again but she dances and teaches others. She’s a motivational speaker and a living miracle. 2. 2

Great collection, as always, but it seems like we missed out on the minimalists this month…

  3. 3

September Bliss & Colorful Apple are the winners for me.

Although, as always, all the designs are of excellent quality. Very inspiring.

Now to decide which machine to put which design on?? hmmm… September Bliss on the Mac and Colorful Apple on the PC I think…

Thank you for another great collection SM.

P.S. Is anyone else seeing the Swiss Re Building (aka the ‘Gherkin’) in the Geometric design?

    • 4

Haha! I hadn’t noticed the Gherkin until you said it, it’s most probably unintentional though.

      • 5

I agree, but perhaps it provides some insight into how Norman Foster initially conceptualized such an iconic building?

Thank you very much for publishing my work and to have my design alongside such great artists. “If they want to see more of my work this is my link

  5. 7

A little disappointed with this months selection if I’m honest. I would have expected a bit more choice in 3D Art like there has been previously.

Regardless, I’d pick out the lighthouse, september bliss and Jonathan Livingston Seagull as my favourites.

  6. 8

Colorful Apple is awesome and my personal best for september wallpapers!

  7. 9

Nothing inspiring me here this month or last. Maybe we’re growing apart…

    • 10

      Yeah, me too :(

There are less comments this month compared to last, so I guess some others are feeling the same.

    • 11

They’re not as good as the ones we’ve seen in the past. This month I like the Colorful Apple and Peaceful Critters.

  8. 12

this is getting worse every month. a pitty, though, it used to be good.

    • 13

Care to try creating something yourself oh god of design?

    • 14

Yup, I agree. I used to look forward to a new Smashing wallpaper every month. Now it’s like a train wreck – I can’t help but look at how bad the selections have become. And no I don’t design, didn’t submit, and whatever silly responses you’ll reply with for my comments.

      • 15

You are whining about your selection from a free service provided to you. No one forces you to come to this website and download desktops yet you take it upon your own narcissistic self to insult the people that put time in to provide you with your free desktop wallpaper. Aren’t you just a wonderful contribution to society?

        • 16

You must have submitted one of these wallpapers. No offense but they are rather poor this month and the continued decline in quality does not do justice to the otherwise excellent level of work usually posted to SM.

        • 17

I agree with you. I think the people taking the time and putting in hte effort to provide us with the se beautiful ‘free’ designs should be well appreciate – and for those of who don’t have anything nice to say or if this is not for you, feel free to take your negativity somewhere else. Don’t get me wrong – criticism should always be welcome, but when it is insulting.

        • 19

  9. 20

Crazy I love !! Got Ink? nice color and humor

  10. 21

    Love this month’s collection!

I was kinda disappointed by previous months, thought that the quality was decreasing, so I’m glad to see the overflow of quality work this month.

Maybe because many designers had some spare time on their hands :)

  11. 22

    My favorite:
-Big Dinner,Yellow Submarine,Peacefall Critters,Love And Friendship (I love cartoon and they’re very cute)
-Jonathan Livingston Seagull – very beautiful scene.

  12. 23

All really well done as usual.
    Absolute favourite: Moods & Moments.

  13. 24

    thanks muchhh :)

  14. 25

Wicked collection love the lighthouse one and the back to school illustration.

  15. 26

How to choose-all are wonderful! Lost month I chose “Lion”-love it, little sad to say good bye, this month-don’t know yet:D Congrats to artists-great work and thank you Smashing Magazine!

    of course the table!
it’s my hometown.. thnx a lot for that version of calender =)

  19. 30

I vouch for “The Big Dinner”, “September Bliss” was another one of my favorites along with ink and “livingston seagull”.

September Bliss gave me a pleasant feeling of the arrival of september!! and big dinner was amusing!! Loved the concept of “got ink” and other wallpapers are great too!!

  20. 31

WOW, I really love ‘Lighthouse’ ..its so wuha

  21. 32

Thanks to everyone who provided 1600×1200!

  22. 33

I’m agree with simon. This month really SUCKS!
I think this kind of things happends because smashMag applied new policy!

we like the old ones, you just grow bigger with less quality even in the other posts.I liked the Mag like before, small with more quality!

  23. 34

    The last one is awesome!
    Just a question : No 1366×768 walls? :/

    • 35

You must have overlooked a few wallpapers “Flamingo” and “City of Antwerp” both have these resolutions available.

  24. 36

Some great ones, as usual–particularly Lighthouse, but the bright orange Smashing logo smeared on it ruins the entire effect.

  25. 37

Great collection this month. I’ve gone for the lighthouse. The moods one has invented a new mood – Relexed.

  26. 38

Thanks to all who submitted. I picked ‘Things are Looking Up’ and ‘City on Antwerp’.

    • 39

Thank you for liking my wallpaper submission “City of Antwerp”, I appreciate it.

      Are you from Belgium/Antwerp?

  27. 40

I love your collection in what I like the most is the capture of Jonathan Livingston Seagull how did he do that?

  34. 47

I like all. Thanks so much!

  36. 49

I love the “Moods & Moments” Design. its a creative Design…

  37. 50

“September bliss” is my favorite wallpaper for this month :)

  38. 51

Colorful Apple – my favorite :) … and Got Ink – a funny one :)

  39. 52

Ooh, I truly like Lighthouse and Things Are Looking Up (especially the background story in this one!). Fortunately I have two screens, so I don’t have to decide between those two.
Thanks for the nice collection again!

  40. 53

I just wonder, why so many wallpapers without 1280×1024, one of the most popular resolutions. What res should I download instead?

    • 54

You could use the 1920×1440 resolutions, those have the same aspect ratio of 1.33333… The resolution 1280×1024 was very popular a while back indeed but it’s a bit dated right now, everyone’s getting way bigger resolutions.

My wallpaper “City of Antwerp” provides the resolution you are looking for, take a look and enjoy.

  41. 55

September Bliss is my choice this month. Thank you SM for another great collection!

  42. 56

I chose City Of Antwerp, the photo has a nice composition and the quotation is great :)

    • 57

Thank you for chosing my submission “City of Antwerp”, I appreciate it a lot!
      Are you from around?

  43. 58

Jonathan Livingston Seagull is the best for me, fantastic wallpaper!

  44. 59

Flamingo is cool – kinda messes with my senses… Nice job.
Other than that – I’m a bit tired (tired might be an understatement) of the vignette effects.

  45. 60

    I like a lighthouse ;)

  46. 61

I really wish more of the wallpapers offered a 1024 x 1280 resolution!

    • 62

You could use the 1920×1440 resolutions instead. My wallpaper “City of Antwerp” provides this resolution.

  47. 63

    school fun is funny!

  48. 64

    great walls thanks!

  49. 65

Flamingo and September Bliss are my favourites this month. Thank you to all the designers :)

  50. 66

    September Bliss !!!
    my favorite !!

    Love it so much!!

  51. 67

I never read the descriptions, I just pick whatever rocks my boat… but I always notice later that the wallpaper I’ve picked is designed by vladstudio :P

  52. 68

I mostly like the “Things are looking up” wallpaper but Seagull and Apple is also bloody awesome. Thank you Smashingmag!

  53. 69

Please give 1366×768 size, for next month

  54. 70

Colorful Apple is way ahead the competition…

  55. 71

    Great collection this month! :D

  56. 72

September Bliss looks great on my Ipad!

  57. 73

Apart from Colourful Apple and Red Beetle which I can say are little bit good, in a whole September wallpaper looks like child’s play for me. I mean it will not last for a day on my laptop wallpaper.

  58. 74

Wow a really awesome collection. I am a little sad that my wallpaper isn’t featured. Ah well for those that want a Rugby World Cup 2011 wallpaper – you are welcome to get it from my blog:

  59. 75

    my fav is Big Dinner

  60. 76

    Dear contributors,

Please don’t forget about the 27″ Mac owners (2560×1440). We like your wallpapers but we need a few more pixels.

Thanks to the guys who rememberd us.

  61. 77

Thanks for the collection. This is a terrific idea and a great way for people to show their work and gather feedback.
If your purpose is to generate inspiration, Dancing in September did it for me. I’m not wild about the photo (though I can’t promise mine are better), but it gave me a fantastic idea to solve a problem I have been stuck on for 2 months! Thanks again.

  62. 78

I like a lot of the wallpapers but can’t use but 2 or 3 of them. I have to use the darker wallpapers but lately they have been few and far between. Most are to just to bright on the newer monitors. Sad, b/c I do look forward to this every month.

  63. 79

    Love And Friendship wins! ;)

  64. 80

I’m so humbled to be part of this month’s awesome selection of wallpaper designs!

  65. 81

Pyre in the Sky is just beautiful, definitely the choice for the month!

  66. 82

Great Collection, thanks for posting! All of them are great but I think the Lighthouse is my favorite.

  67. 83

My favorite is Feel Free! I love pigeons! Thanks for the great wallpaper.

  68. 84

    Pyre in the Sky rocks!!!!

  69. 85

My favourite one is: Pyre in the Sky – i love it :-)

  70. 86

I’m a bit disappointed this month too. I usually get so excited the 1st of every month and the last two months … nothing much. The artists are very talented, but there’s been nothing I’m super excited about – to use on my desktop. I don’t mean to complain as this is a free exhibition of art – and the efforts are appreciated. I just happened to notice a few other folks feel the same way so I thought I’d chime in.

  71. 87

    Very disappointed.

  72. 88

    Feel Free is my favorite!

  73. 89

Not your greatest collection but I can still pick my favourite: Stanimira Petrova from Bulgaria… Saying Thank you to a Friend!

  74. 90

Great selection this month, really nice designs…

    Regards from Spain.

  100. 118

    Geometric it is for me!

  101. 120

    September Bliss is really good..

Also Thank You for those beautiful pics guys..

  102. 121

Great collection! I like Pyre In The Sky. I would like it to be 1280×800, because when I resize the picture is streched and doesn’t look that good. But a very good collection and thank you for the work! :)

  103. 122

    Great postings as usual,
why don’t post also dual monitor versions (or create a separate category), could be a chance to express even more creativity on even more pxels !!!

  104. 123

I was a bit disappointed with both last month and this month – with the exception of Almog Shemesh. I picked his wallpapers for both August and September. :) although one request to Almog would be to switch up the actual background color of the illustration – instead of getting a whole new feel for the month and changing the color scheme, I just got a new character on the same color background. He’s still cute though, heh. Got ink?

  105. 124

Love September Bliss, Peaceful Critters, and Pyre in the Sky. Thank you all!

  106. 125

Usable calendars, please! I don’t need a random assortment of numbers in different lines. I need date of the month and day of the week matched up!

  107. 126

September Bliss, with Peacefall Critters coming in a close second.

  108. 127

I wish Hayat Sheikh brings out a book loving the illustrations, one can see you are just having fun!! love all your designs =)

  109. 128

A bit dismayed that you are lacking in a 9/11 tribute, as that event has affected the entire world.

  110. 129

School fun is my favorite. Great illustration style… nice use of color. Very cool design.

  111. 130

Disappointing. I’m a fan of the lighthouse and the September bliss, but seriously no rugby world cup theme and no 9/11 10 yr anniversary theme? How could both of these be overlooked?

  112. 131

Red Beetle is so touching! Something makes me feel, it’s living and a happy one )

  113. 133

The flamingo is on my wall now. It’s a great design and such a lovely plum colour.

  114. 134

Bleh… nothing I like this month. Uninspired.

  115. 135

    12th September mah birthday

  116. 136

    September Bliss is lovely! Thanks!

  117. 137

    Thanks everyone

Surprised there wasn’t more ‘Autumn’ pictures to be honest. I’ve chosen September purely for the leavey Autumn colours, but maybe that’s because I am from UK!

Look forward to October. Please someone do a Halloween one!

  118. 138
