Upcoming Web Design and Development Conferences in 2011-12

We spend a lot of time learning and thinking about the designs we see online, yet what we miss quite often are practical insights into the design process and workflow of our colleagues. This is why conferences are great for our industry. We meet people who think very much like we do and most probably struggle with similar problems; and perhaps they’ve found a solution which can inspire others. We learn how our colleagues work and what they have experienced; we can exchange our thoughts and ideas directly — something that we might struggle finding time for on Twitter or via email. Networking is great, and it’s powerful. And this is why every now and again we present an overview of upcoming conferences on Smashing Magazine.

In fact, it’s that time of year again when the Web design conference schedule really heats up. As we’ve always done in the past, here we present to you a chronological list of all the upcoming events and conferences that are of specific interest to Web designers and developers. We’ve also put together a Google Calendar1 as well as an Events iCal (.ics) file2 for you to use as a reference for your schedule. If you know of an event taking place between now and February, please add it to the comments. You can jump to a section using the links below:

    Hi Louis,

we’re hosting the “Deutsche Publishing-Konferenz 2012″ (short “DPK12″) in late April next year. It would be cool if you could take this one in your list, too.

Tickets are on super-early-bird right now, more information is on our website http://publishing-konferenz.de/ or on http://lanyrd.com/cdtyt.

    Thank you very much!

Can anyone recommend an excellent design conference that would be good for visual website/mobile or just website designers to attend?

    • 205

Ditto. I am having a difficult time finding trustworthy recommendations so that I can convince the bosses :)

I found this when looking into UX Week, but not many comments about whether other conferences were worth the expense, or if it they were meant for experienced web/mobile designers.

Now the question is whether Smashing Mag would consider including some kind of voting system for past conferences?

Hi, you should also mention Digitized Digital Design Conference, Athens, October 1st, 2011.

It’s the first year in Greece to host an only-digital design conference, and the event was sold out 8 days before. We have a great line-up of speakers, such as Florian Schmitt (Hi-ReS!), Anton Repponen (Fi NY), Anthony Kyriazis (Tribal DDB Athens, Onyro), Constantinos Demetriadis (Tribal DDB Athens, UX Mag), Haris Hararis (Radial.gr) and Nassos K. (OgilvyOne Athens).

Great list however, thanks for putting these all up together for us!

Also just announced is the Vancouver 2012 Web Design & Usability conference in June. Interlink Conference is a small hand-crafted event created for web professionals of all types. Explore the intersection of web design, code, and content during 2 empowering days of curated talks and workshops in Vancouver, Canada. (Plus, there’s dodgeball.)

London’s first Symfony Live conference takes place next month on the 13th and 14th September. This event, in the heart of London’s vibrant technical scene, brings together the best minds from open source enterprise software development. Open to the Symfony and Drupal communities, the first day will involve two workshop tracks: Getting Started with Symfony2and Going Further with Symfony2. The second day features a deeply technical conference with speakers including Fabien Potencier, CEO, SensioLabs and Dries Buytaert, CTO, Acquia. Both lead successful enterprise open source companies based on their respective technologies, and are well-known speakers on the conference circuit. There will be a variety of other talks during the day covering topics including composer, Symfony Components, phpdocumentor and silex.

This will also be the first opportunity to sit the Certified Symfony Developer exam in the UK. The certification is very new, the first exam took place at the Paris conference in June. So this is a great opportunity to really identify yourself as a true Symfony pro.

Advance warning: you will need solid Symfony2 experience.

If you’d like to attend this event, tickets are currently on sale with an early bird discount price of £150 that runs until the end of July.
Whether you’re completely new to Symfony and Drupal, or an experienced user, there’s something to suit you here.
Find out more about the talks and the speakers we’re updating the page with more information as we get it.
