We always try our best to challenge your artistic abilities and produce some interesting, beautiful and creative artwork. And as designers we usually turn to different sources of inspiration. As a matter of fact, we’ve discovered the best one — desktop wallpapers that are a little more distinctive than the usual crowd. This creativity mission has been going on for over two years now, and we are very thankful to all designers who have contributed and are still diligently contributing each month.

We continue to nourish you with a monthly spoon of inspiration. This post features 30 free desktop wallpapers created by artists across the globe for December 2011. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free. It’s time to freshen up your wallpaper!

Please note that:

  • All images can be clicked on and lead to the preview of the wallpaper,
  • You can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our Desktop Wallpaper Calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?

Crayon’s Snowy Sailing

"When I was a little girl, I was greatly fascinated about the magic of crayons. I still am. This illustration pays homage to the humble crayon. A life shared with children (and grown-ups who refuse to grow old). A small but a colorful, textured life. This winter season, I want to portray “Crayosa” as she peacefully sails through the snowy sea, carried by the stack of crayons in different shades of blue and purple." Like quite a few of them; especially of note…

“Jingle All The Way”": one of the most creative ways to display the calendar. It both reminds me of sledding/skiing and gives the sense of a “countdown” as it spirals down to both Christmas and a New Year.

Loved the “Tongue on Lamppost” & “Candy Cane Monster” for smiles & joy they provide, and…

The “International Christmas” and “Merry XMas” heart to remind me what the true meaning of Christmas is (goodwill toward men & love) when I start to get too caught up in the hustle & shopping & commercial cynicism.

Took Jingle All the Way this month – I love when the designer uses the calendar itself as part of the design. So fun and whimsical! Thank you!

Let me just say I love these designs. The company I work for recently decided to stop designing desktop calendars due to a needed change in resources and responsibilities. While I understand and agree with the change, I was a bit disappointed as I look forward to having a new desktop calendar each month. I am so excited that I have found these calendars and they are absolutely wonderful!!!! Even better than what I had before! Kudos to the artists! I had a tough time picking just one and I’m more than likely going to change my desktop throughout the month because I just couldn’t pick only one design!

There is a txt file we have to fill in as we submit our calendars, and there is no option for an 1366×768 resolution. My laptop has this resolution as well, btw, and it’s sad that we don’t have this possible. You know what? I’ll email The Smashing Guys about this idea.

  14. 14

According to wikipedia 1366×768 is the second most common resolution for internet users (behind 1024×768). Maybe let them know that as well.
