Behind the Design

As always, here are some insights from the designers:

“For us, the end of the year usually brings some precious time to reflect on our work and how our love for design remains relevant to the user interface design community. Our revelation this year is that clean, pixel perfect vector icons have become immensely important to our work. This means we typically spend the extra time to develop the icons that fit the specific need of the job at hand. As you can imagine, this ‘extra’ time takes considerable effort — effort that is often not a part of a clients’ original scope of work.

These holidays, we decided that the best gift we could offer our friends and colleagues is free access to some of our favorite custom UI icons. They are available in Adobe Photoshop PSDs, and for our really special friends, Fireworks PNGs. All vector, all scalable, all free to use for commercial or personal applications. Stay tuned for more in 2012!”

Thank you, Tomas Gajar and August Interactive. We appreciate your work and your good intentions!

A question for SM / icon author:
Does ‘without any restrictions’ mean I can use it in a GPL-licensed package? I’d like to create a WP theme using this icon pack someday :)

    Very nice icons.
Just as Banhurt said, I’d also love to see those icons in SVG format instead of “Fireworks PNG”. A standard format instead of a proprietary modification of a standard format should be a better choice for sharing stuff with the world.

    According libpng.org:
“Like GIF and TIFF, PNG is a raster format, which is to say, it represents an image as a two-dimensional array of colored dots (pixels). PNG is explicitly not a vector format, i.e., one that can store shapes (lines, boxes, ellipses, etc.) and be scaled arbitrarily without any loss of quality (generally speaking). For that you probably want SVG or PostScript. (There are some private extensions to PNG that add vector information in addition to PNG’s regular pixels–Macromedia’s Fireworks does something along those lines–but no valid PNG may omit the pixel data.)”

You are not 100% correct about this one.

The open-source PNG file format actually can store any metadata in it, including vectors, bitmaps, effects, pages and layers, etc. So editable Adobe Fireworks PNG files contain data that would allow you to easily re-scale, re-color and modify your icons without any loss of quality! (Same should be valid for Photoshop PSD file format, in case icons are vector-based.) Yes, you would need Fireworks for this purpose, but the same could be applied to InDesign files, Illustrator files, and so on…
