Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: March 2012
We always try our best to challenge your artistic abilities and produce some interesting, beautiful and creative artwork. And as designers we usually turn to different sources of inspiration. As a matter of fact, we’ve discovered the best one — desktop wallpapers that are a little more distinctive than the usual crowd. This creativity mission has been going on for over two years now, and we are very thankful to all designers who have contributed and are still diligently contributing each month.
We continue to nourish you with a monthly spoon of inspiration. This post features free desktop wallpapers created by artists across the globe for March 2012. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free. It’s time to freshen up your wallpaper!
Please note that:
- All images can be clicked on and lead to the preview of the wallpaper,
- You can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our Desktop Wallpaper Calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?

February 29th, 2012 3:10 pm:[ Why don’t the good ones ever have normal calendars? I can’t tell what days those lined up things are on. Bleh.

March 2nd, 2012 4:47 pmThis is precisely my problem. Designers, please bear in mind that some people have a hard time keeping track of time if you use a linear calendar. I seem to have some kind of temporal dyslexia, which is why I download the calendar in the first place. Thanks!!
Tom
March 6th, 2012 10:06 pmThat’s one reason why I like Letter From Spring so much. It also is cleaner, which works well for wallpaper.
Christine
March 7th, 2012 4:10 pmPersonally, I quite enjoy the linear calendars :D …but having the option would be nice?
Sam
March 11th, 2012 7:07 amAmen! The linear calendars are really hard to use and the whole point of having a calendar on wallpaper is for convenience! Please please please more wallpapers with “normal” calendars. (I adore the cookie one this month.)
Kadir Selcuk
February 29th, 2012 3:31 pmMarching Martians is brilliant :)
Barb
February 29th, 2012 4:25 pmLove the Marching Martians for March!
p.s. Wish you would make your Smashing logo just a wee bit smaller or more inconspicuous. It detracts from the backgrounds. Thanks!

February 29th, 2012 3:50 pmLike always… No 1366×768! How long do we need to fight for this resolution? :(
Neerav
February 29th, 2012 4:33 pmI own two monitor one with 1366×768 and another with 1600×900. No single wallpaper with that resolutions. I am so disappointed ;(
Anyways good collection of wallpaper :D
Dave
March 1st, 2012 1:05 pm2. Add calendar with rainmeter, geektool, or Photoshop.
3. There is no step 3
4. Also note that a 1920×1080 calendar [several options this month], scales down to both 1600×900 AND 1366×768 perfectly. Either adjust it yourself in photoshop, or just use the larger file size version and let your wallpaper manager do it.
5. Enjoy!
Chris Sargeant
February 29th, 2012 3:53 pmKeep Running Up That Hill definitely stuck out. Totally my favourite. :) Great work!

February 29th, 2012 3:56 pm“Ides of March” has two 25th’s. No 26th.
Johnny Martin
February 29th, 2012 3:56 pmI love these backgrounds! My only beef is that so few are in 2560×1440, which I would think would be more common since this is a design community.

February 29th, 2012 4:34 pmStrange, too few 1366 and 1600 resolutions.. :( I guess I will soon say goodbye to sm wallpapers…
Dave
March 4th, 2012 12:59 amThere are plenty of choices this month, as always … as long as you know that:
2560×1440 and 1920×1080 are the same as 1366×768 [technically 1366x768.375, but I doubt you'll notice that 3/8 of a pixel skewing]
1920×1440 is the same as 1600×1200.
Enjoy your travels!

February 29th, 2012 7:10 pmI’ll say it AGAIN. Calendars should have the option to begin the weeks on a SUNDAY! What a shame. Many cute unusable calendars. Disappointing. Again.
JP
March 1st, 2012 12:31 amI agree, Dee: usable calendars are great.
Kris
March 1st, 2012 3:29 pmThe calendars are free. The designers make the calendars however they want. You can always download the version without the calendar and add a calendar yourself. That would require more effort than simply complaining though, I suppose.
Jens
February 29th, 2012 7:24 pmYeah, only “Spring and Owl” have the most important date in March marked. Many thanks to Katerina. Guys, think of the Women’s Day on 8th! Make your girl or women a joy. Flowers are a goooood idea. :)

Annie
March 1st, 2012 4:07 amWow. So unimpressive this month. I usually find 7-10 I like and I rotate them throughout the month but this time, I only found 3 I like.
And as for calendars starting on Monday – I don’t mind it. After all, Saturday and Sunday are called the weekEND. ;-) It bugs me that our calendars here in the US all start the week on Sunday. Oh well.

March 2nd, 2012 11:25 amThat might be your preference, or the convention in your country, but it’s clearly not the case for a lot of other people. Is it really that big a deal anyway?

Michele
March 1st, 2012 3:03 pmReally disappointing this month. The only ones I like are too small for my screen (2560 x 1440).
Please enforce larger resolution images! This is the first month in almost 3 years I haven’t been able to find a wallpaper to use.
@Moyolkrec
March 1st, 2012 3:05 pmKeep Running Up That Hill is by far my favorite wallpaper you’ve done in a while. Do you have for an iPhone and iPad?
GVVV
March 1st, 2012 3:45 pmThe Smiley Collector. 1 life!
Andy
March 1st, 2012 4:01 pmCyrkiel for my mahoosive monitor, Running up that Hill for my little one.
Don’t get why so many people want the week to start on a Sunday though; I’m assuming it’s a religious thing? My week starts on a Monday…
Also, you can scale or even carefully crop higher resolution images down to smaller ones. That the designers have taken the time to create so many different resolutions in the first place (for free!) is generous enough.
Michela
March 1st, 2012 5:41 pmI love the wallpapers… It´s so bad usually there is none made for the down the Equator seasons… It´s going to be Fall here in Brazil… :(

March 2nd, 2012 9:48 amI’d really like to see more DUAL screen resolutions supported (3840×1080 for me), I think quite a large proportion of users will be using 2 (or more) monitors – certainly all the developers I know have had 2 screens for at least the past 5 years.
Annie (#42) is right Sat and Sunday are the weekEND, the week begins on a Monday – always has, always will.

March 2nd, 2012 11:23 amMy favourites this month are “Keep Running Up That Hill” and “Spring and Owl”.
Also, I know that the convention in the USA is for calendar weeks to start on a Sunday, but this isn’t the case in a lot of other countries. It kind of winds me up when some people think that one way is “right” and the other way is “wrong”…it just varies!

March 3rd, 2012 8:30 pmSuper cool walls. I wish there was love for 1366×768 too. Nevertheless, awesome collection as usual.

March 4th, 2012 1:03 amBeating a dead horse here with my third similar comment, but there are plenty of choices for 1366×768, if you realize that these two sizes will scale down perfectly:
2560×1440 and 1920×1080 … it works out to 1366×768.375
And I doubt you’ll notice the stretching and skewing that 3/8 of a pixel brings to the table.

March 4th, 2012 1:09 amThird month in a row for the Owl calendar. It may be silly but I’m enjoying watching the owl and little bird go through the months and am looking forward to more.

March 5th, 2012 6:05 pmSuperb collection. Smashing magazine is the best site for monthly wall papers. I liked Hello Spring, Spring and Owl. Keep it up Katerina Bobkova and Forsaken.

March 11th, 2012 7:52 amI love all of these – always do. But here’s what I look for (apart from a connection with the artist’s idea.)
A (usually darkish) background of some kind against which I can still see the bazzillions of icons which infest my desktop. I cannot do without my icons. I am a hoarder.
I have to rule out any wallpapers geared too prominently around Northern Hemisphere seasonal motif. I am in the Southern Hemisphere.
But I quibble. These designs are always gorgeous, inspiring and serve as a daily reminder that there are lots of really nice people in the world. Sigh.

March 18th, 2012 2:49 pmI’m so glad I discovered your website here in Canada. The designs are just awesome and I have to change my background every week cuz I can’t decide which design I like the best. I like the way the calendars are arranged which other people have complained about. I keep an ‘ordinary’ calendar near my monitor so who cares what the desktop wallpaper calendar looks like. It’s part of the design. One thing to consider is to keep the design towards the right hand side of the page since the icons on the left hide what’s over there.
Keep up the great work! Thanks!
