Desktop Wallpaper Calendars: March 2012

We always try our best to challenge your artistic abilities and produce some interesting, beautiful and creative artwork. And as designers we usually turn to different sources of inspiration. As a matter of fact, we’ve discovered the best one — desktop wallpapers that are a little more distinctive than the usual crowd. This creativity mission has been going on for over two years now, and we are very thankful to all designers who have contributed and are still diligently contributing each month.

We continue to nourish you with a monthly spoon of inspiration. This post features free desktop wallpapers created by artists across the globe for March 2012. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free. It’s time to freshen up your wallpaper!

Please note that:

  • All images can be clicked on and lead to the preview of the wallpaper,
  • You can feature your work in our magazine1 by taking part in our Desktop Wallpaper Calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?

:[ Why don’t the good ones ever have normal calendars? I can’t tell what days those lined up things are on. Bleh.

    • 2

This is precisely my problem. Designers, please bear in mind that some people have a hard time keeping track of time if you use a linear calendar. I seem to have some kind of temporal dyslexia, which is why I download the calendar in the first place. Thanks!!

    • 3

That’s one reason why I like Letter From Spring so much. It also is cleaner, which works well for wallpaper.

    • 4

Personally, I quite enjoy the linear calendars :D …but having the option would be nice?

    • 5

Amen! The linear calendars are really hard to use and the whole point of having a calendar on wallpaper is for convenience! Please please please more wallpapers with “normal” calendars. (I adore the cookie one this month.)

  2. 6

    Marching Martians is brilliant :)

  3. 11

I decided to go with Keep Running Up That Hill for March. Thanks :)

  4. 14

Like always… No 1366×768! How long do we need to fight for this resolution? :(

    • 15

I own two monitor one with 1366×768 and another with 1600×900. No single wallpaper with that resolutions. I am so disappointed ;(

Anyways good collection of wallpaper :D

    • 16

      2. Add calendar with rainmeter, geektool, or Photoshop.
      3. There is no step 3
      4. Also note that a 1920×1080 calendar [several options this month], scales down to both 1600×900 AND 1366×768 perfectly. Either adjust it yourself in photoshop, or just use the larger file size version and let your wallpaper manager do it.
      5. Enjoy!

  5. 17

Keep Running Up That Hill definitely stuck out. Totally my favourite. :) Great work!

  6. 18

“Ides of March” has two 25th’s. No 26th.

  7. 19

I love these backgrounds! My only beef is that so few are in 2560×1440, which I would think would be more common since this is a design community.

  8. 20

    The Smiley Collector is excellent

  9. 21

Strange, too few 1366 and 1600 resolutions.. :( I guess I will soon say goodbye to sm wallpapers…

    • 22

There are plenty of choices this month, as always … as long as you know that:

2560×1440 and 1920×1080 are the same as 1366×768 [technically 1366x768.375, but I doubt you'll notice that 3/8 of a pixel skewing]
1920×1440 is the same as 1600×1200.

      Enjoy your travels!

  10. 23

keep running on that hill, the sweet good morning girl and I love my soft wares are my fav !

  11. 24

Please please please make it mandatory to have 2560×1440 as part of the submission!!!!!!

  12. 25

These are fantastic! Thank you for sharing these, and thank you to the artists who designed them! I’m sharing this page with everyone I know.

Great selection!! Spring is pretty inspiring, huh? :)

  14. 27

Cookie fun and spring owl favs. Thanks.

  15. 29

I’ll say it AGAIN. Calendars should have the option to begin the weeks on a SUNDAY! What a shame. Many cute unusable calendars. Disappointing. Again.

    • 30

I agree, Dee: usable calendars are great.

    • 31

The calendars are free. The designers make the calendars however they want. You can always download the version without the calendar and add a calendar yourself. That would require more effort than simply complaining though, I suppose.

  16. 32

Yeah, only “Spring and Owl” have the most important date in March marked. Many thanks to Katerina. Guys, think of the Women’s Day on 8th! Make your girl or women a joy. Flowers are a goooood idea. :)

  17. 33

IDES OF MARCH is witty. Like the humor. The calendars are a great way to keep people coming back to the site.

  18. 34

“Keep Running up that Hill” did it for me! Thanks!

  19. 35

I, too, am not crazy about the calendar layout with Mondays first, but I like the designs so much, I put up with it. Thanks so much, for brightening up my desktop!

  20. 36

Cookie Fun is so cute and refreshing. Love it ^^

  21. 37

Love the selection. Keep it up!

  22. 38

    More rarely I see wallpapers that I like… :(

  23. 39

    March Fusion is the best.
    Always many thanks, SM.
    Yours sincerely from Italy.

  24. 40

    great collection! thanx

  25. 41

I love Canoe by the Lake. Thanks again for a fantastic selection of calendars.

  26. 42

I am not satisfied at all of this collection the previous ones were amazing :/
    Too bad!!

  27. 43

Cookie Fun is my fav — love it!! :)

  28. 44

    My favorite: Spring And Owl.
The indeterminate mood and color echo the weather and climate of the month.

  29. 46

Please keep this going, SM & artists. I use them monthly! :)

  30. 47

    I love Hello Spring

  31. 48

Wow. So unimpressive this month. I usually find 7-10 I like and I rotate them throughout the month but this time, I only found 3 I like.

And as for calendars starting on Monday – I don’t mind it. After all, Saturday and Sunday are called the weekEND. ;-) It bugs me that our calendars here in the US all start the week on Sunday. Oh well.

  32. 49
  33. 50

Keep Running Up That Hill…! liked most..

  34. 51

Katarina Bobkova from Ukraine… second month in a row I use her wallpaper. Love it!

  35. 53

cookie fun is the best for me~~I like such clean and colorful style~~

  36. 54

I like a message ” keep running up the hill ” don,t stop never… congratulations Andy Patrick !!!
    from Canada…

  37. 56

This month I’m missing a good old landscape photo wallpaper with just a calendar on it.

  38. 57

    Love the cat wallpaper

    Great post

  39. 58

    I picked “Hello Spring” :)

  40. 59

I repeat – the first day of the week is Sunday. This month only one calendar is of use to me and I do not like it….

    • 60

That might be your preference, or the convention in your country, but it’s clearly not the case for a lot of other people. Is it really that big a deal anyway?

  41. 62

Shock the monkey to spring! I love it!

  42. 63

    The Smiley Collector 1680×1050. Thanks!

  43. 64

Since Saint Patricks Day and all things shamrock have been excluded from the collection, I am torn between Canoe and Martians?

  44. 65

Really amazing collection. It’s hard to make up a favorite calender mind this month. Let’s change a wallpaper every day :)

  45. 66

Dull as usual in the past year or so

  46. 67

Spring and Owl is too cute not to be a favorite. Loved it!

  47. 68

Really disappointing this month. The only ones I like are too small for my screen (2560 x 1440).

Please enforce larger resolution images! This is the first month in almost 3 years I haven’t been able to find a wallpaper to use.

  48. 69

Keep Running Up That Hill is by far my favorite wallpaper you’ve done in a while. Do you have for an iPhone and iPad?

  49. 70

    The Smiley Collector. 1 life!

  50. 71

Cyrkiel for my mahoosive monitor, Running up that Hill for my little one.

Don’t get why so many people want the week to start on a Sunday though; I’m assuming it’s a religious thing? My week starts on a Monday…

Also, you can scale or even carefully crop higher resolution images down to smaller ones. That the designers have taken the time to create so many different resolutions in the first place (for free!) is generous enough.

  51. 72

I love the wallpapers… It´s so bad usually there is none made for the down the Equator seasons… It´s going to be Fall here in Brazil… :(

  52. 73

    Great wallpaper (=

  53. 74

The wallpaper of the option without calendar 1024×1024 of the lucky month, has a mistake in the “A” of “A 4 LEAF” is like “falling”. :s

  54. 75

Love the Golden Eyed Cat! Cyrkiel is good too… I think the wallpapers in these styles tend to be underrated every month.

  55. 76

Mountain is my fav! Love it..

  56. 77

I’d really like to see more DUAL screen resolutions supported (3840×1080 for me), I think quite a large proportion of users will be using 2 (or more) monitors – certainly all the developers I know have had 2 screens for at least the past 5 years.

Annie (#42) is right Sat and Sunday are the weekEND, the week begins on a Monday – always has, always will.

  57. 78

My favourites this month are “Keep Running Up That Hill” and “Spring and Owl”.

Also, I know that the convention in the USA is for calendar weeks to start on a Sunday, but this isn’t the case in a lot of other countries. It kind of winds me up when some people think that one way is “right” and the other way is “wrong”…it just varies!

  58. 79

    Love them all!

  59. 80

”Canoe By The Lake” is great..

  60. 81

Spring Owl is A-dOr-able!!!!!! I also love Waiting for Spring, Lucky Month, Cookie Fun and Good morning XD I love the monthly calendars on this site!!!! Thank you so much! :D

  61. 82

    Letter from spring

  62. 83

I was disappointed with the options this month!! :(

  63. 84

    Canoe and Keep-running :)

  64. 85

all are awesome collection .but my favorite is Spring And Owl.

  65. 86

Placebo – Running up that Hill (Kate Bush Remix) perfect song for an awesome background (March 2012).

  66. 87

Super cool walls. I wish there was love for 1366×768 too. Nevertheless, awesome collection as usual.

    • 88

Beating a dead horse here with my third similar comment, but there are plenty of choices for 1366×768, if you realize that these two sizes will scale down perfectly:

      2560×1440 and 1920×1080 … it works out to 1366×768.375

And I doubt you’ll notice the stretching and skewing that 3/8 of a pixel brings to the table.

  67. 89

I like the “Smiley Collector” – it’s so bright and cheerful

  68. 90

Third month in a row for the Owl calendar. It may be silly but I’m enjoying watching the owl and little bird go through the months and am looking forward to more.

  69. 91

It’s so pity. Again nothing, as on the February :(
I like the wallpapers with photos of nature.
And I don’t like any clipeart.

  70. 92

Thanks for the great collection! Loving the Hello Spring wallpaper :D

  71. 93

    I Love My Software!!!!!

I like most.. and it’s my desktop wallpaper now.

    Mufeed Ahmad

  72. 94

Is there ‘Keep Running Up That Hill’ image unless any word? It is my favory.

  73. 95

Superb collection. Smashing magazine is the best site for monthly wall papers. I liked Hello Spring, Spring and Owl. Keep it up Katerina Bobkova and Forsaken.

  74. 96

i like it most. thanks a lot.

I love all of these – always do. But here’s what I look for (apart from a connection with the artist’s idea.)

A (usually darkish) background of some kind against which I can still see the bazzillions of icons which infest my desktop. I cannot do without my icons. I am a hoarder.

I have to rule out any wallpapers geared too prominently around Northern Hemisphere seasonal motif. I am in the Southern Hemisphere.

But I quibble. These designs are always gorgeous, inspiring and serve as a daily reminder that there are lots of really nice people in the world. Sigh.

  76. 98

    Great post! Awesome collection……

  77. 99

Thought that the cookies was the most original. Surprised that there was no St. Patricks Day.

  78. 100

My favourite is Cookie Fun! Very clean, fresh and beautiful idea!

    I Like All Design!!!!!!!!!!!!

  80. 102

I’m so glad I discovered your website here in Canada. The designs are just awesome and I have to change my background every week cuz I can’t decide which design I like the best. I like the way the calendars are arranged which other people have complained about. I keep an ‘ordinary’ calendar near my monitor so who cares what the desktop wallpaper calendar looks like. It’s part of the design. One thing to consider is to keep the design towards the right hand side of the page since the icons on the left hide what’s over there.

Keep up the great work! Thanks!

  81. 103

Very very weak this month :[
