We always try our best to challenge your artistic abilities and produce some interesting, beautiful and creative artwork. And as designers we usually turn to different sources of inspiration. As a matter of fact, we’ve discovered the best one—desktop wallpapers that are a little more distinctive than the usual crowd. This creativity mission has been going on for over four years now, and we are very thankful to all designers who have contributed and are still diligently contributing each month.
We continue to nourish you with a monthly spoon of inspiration. This post features free desktop wallpapers created by artists across the globe for September 2012. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free. It’s time to freshen up your wallpaper!
Please note that:
- All images can be clicked on and lead to the preview of the wallpaper,
- You can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our Desktop Wallpaper Calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?

Nine
"I’m always interested in bridging language and cultures with design. In this wallpaper, I introduce a Chinese idiom with the word ‘Nine’ (in red, pronounced Jiu) – corresponding to September, which is the ninth month of the year. What’s different here is that I’ve constructed my own Chinese words instead of using Chinese fonts – I’ve broken up, joined and bridged glyphs from the Didot font and formed these words – so it’s actually a very visual, design-oriented approach to bridging languages. Hopefully if time permits, I’ll complete the set and do one design for each month, each with a different Chinese idiom containing the number of the month." Designed by Teo Yu Siang from Singapore.

Funny thing (or not?), how the perception of going back to school is so bad in general, like a punishment. It speaks a lot about the whole education system.

August 31st, 2012 6:36 pmwhy so many of them are so childish?
where is the DESIGN?
Loren
September 2nd, 2012 9:45 pmMaybe they are childish because it’s back to school… I don’t appreciate you nasty comment. Is it because you tried a design and it didn’t get chosen bew hew!
Hungry Caterpillar
September 5th, 2012 4:23 pmI wouldn’t consider them to be ‘childish,’ maybe ‘fun’ ? You need to lighten up a little, from what I see, the word DESIGN can be applied to all these. If they are not your taste then design your own, don’t criticize something that is given to you for free.

Not Happy
September 2nd, 2012 4:02 amI really like the selections this month. Utterly disappointed about ‘Summer is Over’. Sad really, and not at all humorous. Last week, another school year started with a shooting leaving students dead. This seems to happen every year, in different countries around the world. And every year, students take their lives because they feel that they have not lived up to the expectations of others whilst in school. Yes, Summer is over but the stress and reality of school life have greater effects and meanings to those within its system. I never comment, and really do not care to hear the responses of others. I am just letting my thoughts on this piece of art be known to the publishers of this site, that being – you should never have posted it as a selection this month.
I totally agree.
September 3rd, 2012 1:52 pmI totally agree with you here. When I saw the “Summer is over” artwork I was shocked that SM has even added it to their selection. Especially if most of the calendars are based on back to school – for children! I think SM should take this off their post immediately. There’s enough violence in this world, and enough suicides, especially under young adults.
Vitaly Friedman (editor-in-chief of Smashing Magazine)
September 4th, 2012 9:44 amThe “Summer Is Over” calendar has now been removed. We apologize if the wallpaper caused any disturbance — this was not our intention at all.
CaySedai
September 7th, 2012 6:22 amNow how about removing (or asking the designers to redo the calendars for) the calendar with August days instead of September (“Back to School”) or “September Calendar” which has “41″ on the 4th and “1″ on the 11th.
And, oh, yeah, “September Bliss,” which has eight days a week (now I have Beatles music running through my head).

September 2nd, 2012 7:57 amI love the designs, but always so sad to see few wallpapers with a standard calendar!

September 3rd, 2012 8:00 amUmmm…. September Calendar by Vlad Gerasimov… am I mistaken or should that 41 (and the 1 under it) be corrected?

September 5th, 2012 3:19 pmI was going to say the naughty kitten has been playing with the numbers or does September now have 41 days in it :)

September 3rd, 2012 3:07 pmHas anyone else noticed that the ‘September Calendar’ one runs 1, 2, 3, 41, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 1, 12?
Calendar Fail.
I got it anyway though, the cat is just too cute!

September 4th, 2012 3:20 amCan I get “World Literacy Day” in 1440X900? I think that is a great depiction of hope of education.

September 4th, 2012 5:38 amI cannot believe that you would include “Summer is over”. I understand what it’s trying to say (oh dear back to school boo hoo) but it utterly fails visually.
Please remove this as it sends a very disturbing message, not only to kids, but to anyone who may be in a dark place. This wallpaper validates suicide as a “way out”, a “quick fix”. And frankly it trivializes people who are suffering from depression.
Really poor, SM.

September 4th, 2012 12:33 pmAutumn invaders is my favorite. I love the retro game look combined with the cross-stitch look. I also like Photo manipulation a lot too but I do have one small criticism. I found the calendar numbers were hard to read when I tried it on my screen.

September 5th, 2012 9:21 am+1 for “nothing beats Autumn Invaders”
September is my favorite month, with full of sunshine, so I would have expected more “happy” wallpapers.
Shootings in schools are not prevalent in the whole world, they’re mostly the problem of the US (not exclusively though). So before commenting that “you should never have posted” the “summer is over” wallpaper, think twice, because for the rest of the world it means something totally different. Besides that I’m sorry for the agression growing in schools, being culturally aware should be a bi-directional process. So don’t assume everyone is aware of what has happened in a school in your country.

September 5th, 2012 11:56 am‘Under the sea’ is great. I have it now on my desktop.

September 5th, 2012 4:16 pmI love the one September Calendar by Vlad Gerasimov, but there is a HUGE TYPO in it! There is a Tuesday the 41st and the next week has a Tuesday 1st!

September 5th, 2012 9:37 pmI love coming every month to explore the designs and pick a wallpaper.
One question: is it possible to have calendar formats with a Sunday weekly start day as an option? I notice a lot of Monday weekly start days and in North America calendars are typically presented with the Sunday first. I’m not sure how difficult it is to add the actual calendar to the picture. It would be nice because I often miss out using a wallpaper I love simply because the first day of the week is Monday, and in the past this has really messed up with my scheduling.

September 7th, 2012 6:28 amI often skip those for the same reason. You could download the version without a calendar and if you have any kind of graphics program at all, you could put your own calendar. One trick is to put the numbers in columns, then align the columns across the top (and space them horizontally). That way the numbers all line up (have them right-justified).

September 6th, 2012 2:26 pmWell I don’t love any of those .No cheloveche.ru this month Can you post it somewhere else I prefer only cheloveche wallpapers.

September 7th, 2012 9:16 pmLove the creativity, but I really encourage the designers to create beautiful AND usable calendars, showing the day of the week AND the date in a way that’s easy to glance at.
None of this unlabeled numbers in a line business! (And no, highlighting the weekend in a different color does not suffice.)

September 9th, 2012 9:17 pmExcellent set of wallpapers. Kudos to all of the designers. I do have to say though, I’m not sure I understand the purpose of having day numbers without the day of the week. All that tells me is how many days there are in that month. It’s more useful to know what day of the week each particular date falls on.

September 19th, 2012 10:03 amHi,
Thanks a lot for all these wonderful wallpapers each month, it’s a pleasure to come, see the creation, and personnalize my screen with them regularly.
I’ve a question concerning this page : could it be possible to propose some filters on the display ?
My idea is simple :
- all wallpapers have different resolution available, but not all resolutions
- i (and everybody) have a specific screen resolution
- each time, i have to search (by text search on the page) which wallpapers exist for my screen
- with a filter, it could be interesting to choose which resolution we want for example, and to have only wallpaper that are adapted to our screen
Of course, if it’s not possible, that’s not a problem, but that is just a personal request to increase the quality of your website.
Have a good day.
F.
