"I’m always interested in bridging language and cultures with design. In this wallpaper, I introduce a Chinese idiom with the word ‘Nine’ (in red, pronounced Jiu) – corresponding to September, which is the ninth month of the year. What’s different here is that I’ve constructed my own Chinese words instead of using Chinese fonts – I’ve broken up, joined and bridged glyphs from the Didot font and formed these words – so it’s actually a very visual, design-oriented approach to bridging languages. Hopefully if time permits, I’ll complete the set and do one design for each month, each with a different Chinese idiom containing the number of the month." 1. 1

My favorite is “Traces”. Minimalist and remembered me when i was a child and have to go back to school after summer holidays…

  2. 2

Autumn Invaders is AWESOME! Love the texture, love the use of leaves, and love the game!

  3. 4

Love the first one! *downloads and uses right away*

  4. 5

Nothing beats “Invaders of Autumn” for me. Great throw-back design in multiple ways. Already displayed on both monitors (a day early).

  5. 6

    Only one 2880×1800 wallpaper? :(

  6. 7

Great collection September 2012, kudos to all!
I like the color tones and texture feeling in “Autumn Invaders”.
And yes, I welcome the initiative of the author of “Nine” to initiate us into the mysteries of Chinese language.

  7. 8

Autumn Memories is definitely my favorite this month.

  8. 9

    Great collection this month.

Funny thing (or not?), how the perception of going back to school is so bad in general, like a punishment. It speaks a lot about the whole education system.

  9. 10

I just love your monthly wallpaper compilations! Chained Lake this September is great, some mystery in it. They are all inspiring, so thank you, good job!

  10. 11

Great wallpapers there! Colorful Trees is my new wallpaper now.

  11. 12

Finally it’s here for September. I have been waiting since morning here in India. Awesome work!!

  12. 13

Love the Colorful Trees by Blazoon. Hope to see more such “dark-ish” wallpapers next months :) One improvement on that – sundays could have been noted in red/orange color.

  13. 14

    Autumn Owl is so cute!!

  14. 15

why so many of them are so childish?
    where is the DESIGN?

    • 16

Maybe they are childish because it’s back to school… I don’t appreciate you nasty comment. Is it because you tried a design and it didn’t get chosen bew hew!

    • 17

      Hungry Caterpillar

      September 5, 2012 4:23 pm

I wouldn’t consider them to be ‘childish,’ maybe ‘fun’ ? You need to lighten up a little, from what I see, the word DESIGN can be applied to all these. If they are not your taste then design your own, don’t criticize something that is given to you for free.

  15. 18

    Autumn invaders

  16. 19

my like goes to “Autumn Invaders” which is first one in the display.
Really There is no dead end for creativity.

Thanks to all designer who made this possible and “smashing magazine” too.

  28. 35

Where’s something from somebody in the Southern hemisphere? September is considered the first month of spring on this side of the world- I was hoping for something fresh and spring-y!

  29. 36

    Simply superb…

  30. 37

Love “Under the sea” !!! Nice one

  31. 38

Am I mistaken, or is “Back to School” by Mark McGall from Northern Ireland has September starting on Wednesday? Typo?

  32. 40

I really like Kate’s Bobkova Autumn Owl! Frankly speaking, I love all wallpapers she made and was so sad when last month were no funny owls.

    • 41

“Funny thing (or not?), how the perception of going back to school is so bad in general, like a punishment. It speaks a lot about the whole education system.”

    Thank You !
    A beautiful collection !
    My favorite is “Colorful Trees”.

  38. 47

I really like the selections this month. Utterly disappointed about ‘Summer is Over’. Sad really, and not at all humorous. Last week, another school year started with a shooting leaving students dead. This seems to happen every year, in different countries around the world. And every year, students take their lives because they feel that they have not lived up to the expectations of others whilst in school. Yes, Summer is over but the stress and reality of school life have greater effects and meanings to those within its system. I never comment, and really do not care to hear the responses of others. I am just letting my thoughts on this piece of art be known to the publishers of this site, that being – you should never have posted it as a selection this month.

    • 48

I totally agree with you here. When I saw the “Summer is over” artwork I was shocked that SM has even added it to their selection. Especially if most of the calendars are based on back to school – for children! I think SM should take this off their post immediately. There’s enough violence in this world, and enough suicides, especially under young adults.

The “Summer Is Over” calendar has now been removed. We apologize if the wallpaper caused any disturbance — this was not our intention at all.

      • 50

Now how about removing (or asking the designers to redo the calendars for) the calendar with August days instead of September (“Back to School”) or “September Calendar” which has “41″ on the 4th and “1″ on the 11th.

And, oh, yeah, “September Bliss,” which has eight days a week (now I have Beatles music running through my head).

  39. 51

I love the designs, but always so sad to see few wallpapers with a standard calendar!

  40. 52

Really pretty cool calendars. Like to use them.

Yeah! This is the thing which I want! Thanks. Also, works are very nice.

  42. 54

Choosing between Autumn Invaders and Autumn Owl! Now which one to pick? Thanks for sharing these!

  43. 55

I love everything! A great selection this month.

  44. 56

Autumn Invaders is awesome. At first, i thought it was a patterned jumper. -_-”

  45. 57

    My favorite is “Photo Manipulation”.

  46. 58

Hi Cherian, your calender is a classic one.. Congrats :)

  47. 59

Love the Autumn Invaders textile-ness – and the Nine one is gorgeous. I still don’t know which one to choose! Maybe I will have to switch halfway.

  48. 60

Ummm…. September Calendar by Vlad Gerasimov… am I mistaken or should that 41 (and the 1 under it) be corrected?

  49. 62

Summer is a state of mind :-)

  50. 63

There are only four 1600×1200 wallpaper :(

  51. 64

Great works! My favorite is “Colorful Trees”. :)

  52. 65

I love the “Automn Invaders” wallpaper.

  53. 66

    Summer is over is nice

    September 3, 2012 3:07 pm

    Has anyone else noticed that the ‘September Calendar’ one runs 1, 2, 3, 41, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 1, 12?
    Calendar Fail.

I got it anyway though, the cat is just too cute!

  56. 70

Autumn Invaders is great! Calendar by Vlad Gerasimov is so cute. :) Also I like Photo Manipulation, Back To School Me Hearties and Chained Lake.

  57. 71

So many good ones (as usual). Going to have to shortlist one for my desktop!

  58. 72

The calendar on September Bliss is wrong! There are 8 days in the week in this one.

  59. 75

Still wish more designers would make a version with weeks starting on Sunday as well.

  60. 76

Can I get “World Literacy Day” in 1440X900? I think that is a great depiction of hope of education.

  61. 78

I cannot believe that you would include “Summer is over”. I understand what it’s trying to say (oh dear back to school boo hoo) but it utterly fails visually.

Please remove this as it sends a very disturbing message, not only to kids, but to anyone who may be in a dark place. This wallpaper validates suicide as a “way out”, a “quick fix”. And frankly it trivializes people who are suffering from depression.

    Really poor, SM.

  62. 79

Autumn invaders is my favorite. I love the retro game look combined with the cross-stitch look. I also like Photo manipulation a lot too but I do have one small criticism. I found the calendar numbers were hard to read when I tried it on my screen.

  63. 80

    Autumn Memories rulez!

  64. 81

    Under the Sea :-)

  65. 82

The owl is back, I <3 him! Thank you Katerina :-)

  66. 83

    Great, thanks a lot :)

  67. 84

Autumn Owl!! Luv iT! :) Thank you :)

  68. 85

Nice collection. My favorite is “Colorful Trees.” When I first saw it, it reminded me of Paramore’s album cover for “all we know is falling.”

  69. 86

Good wallpapers and my favorite one is World Literacy Day ..I love it.. excellent design Mr Cheriyan Manalel..

  70. 87

+1 for “nothing beats Autumn Invaders”

September is my favorite month, with full of sunshine, so I would have expected more “happy” wallpapers.

Shootings in schools are not prevalent in the whole world, they’re mostly the problem of the US (not exclusively though). So before commenting that “you should never have posted” the “summer is over” wallpaper, think twice, because for the rest of the world it means something totally different. Besides that I’m sorry for the agression growing in schools, being culturally aware should be a bi-directional process. So don’t assume everyone is aware of what has happened in a school in your country.

  71. 88

‘Under the sea’ is great. I have it now on my desktop.

  72. 89

I love the one September Calendar by Vlad Gerasimov, but there is a HUGE TYPO in it! There is a Tuesday the 41st and the next week has a Tuesday 1st!

  73. 90

I love coming every month to explore the designs and pick a wallpaper.

One question: is it possible to have calendar formats with a Sunday weekly start day as an option? I notice a lot of Monday weekly start days and in North America calendars are typically presented with the Sunday first. I’m not sure how difficult it is to add the actual calendar to the picture. It would be nice because I often miss out using a wallpaper I love simply because the first day of the week is Monday, and in the past this has really messed up with my scheduling.

    • 91

I often skip those for the same reason. You could download the version without a calendar and if you have any kind of graphics program at all, you could put your own calendar. One trick is to put the numbers in columns, then align the columns across the top (and space them horizontally). That way the numbers all line up (have them right-justified).

  74. 92

Well I don’t love any of those .No this month Can you post it somewhere else I prefer only cheloveche wallpapers.

  75. 93

Love the creativity, but I really encourage the designers to create beautiful AND usable calendars, showing the day of the week AND the date in a way that’s easy to glance at.
None of this unlabeled numbers in a line business! (And no, highlighting the weekend in a different color does not suffice.)

  76. 94
  77. 95

Excellent set of wallpapers. Kudos to all of the designers. I do have to say though, I’m not sure I understand the purpose of having day numbers without the day of the week. All that tells me is how many days there are in that month. It’s more useful to know what day of the week each particular date falls on.

  78. 96

I love this web. It’s funny and util.

  79. 97

Great work : ) My favorites are:
    1) Autumn Invaders
    2) Autumn Memories
    3) Colorful Trees
Thank you – have a great September!

  80. 98

Thanks a lot for all these wonderful wallpapers each month, it’s a pleasure to come, see the creation, and personnalize my screen with them regularly.
I’ve a question concerning this page : could it be possible to propose some filters on the display ?
    My idea is simple :
    - all wallpapers have different resolution available, but not all resolutions
    - i (and everybody) have a specific screen resolution
    - each time, i have to search (by text search on the page) which wallpapers exist for my screen
    - with a filter, it could be interesting to choose which resolution we want for example, and to have only wallpaper that are adapted to our screen
Of course, if it’s not possible, that’s not a problem, but that is just a personal request to increase the quality of your website.
    Have a good day.

  81. 99

I like the smashing magazine’s desktop calendar wallpapers. It is very useful and beautiful at the same time…

In this month, i like – Autumn Invaders, Last days of summer, World Literacy day , September map and Autumn Memories…

My wishes to all other artists too for their wonderful job
