As a matter of fact, we’ve discovered the best one—desktop wallpapers that are a little more distinctive than the usual crowd. This creativity mission has been going on for over four years now, and we are very thankful to all designers who have contributed and are still diligently contributing each month.
This post features free desktop wallpapers created by artists across the globe for December 2012. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free. It’s time to freshen up your wallpaper!

November 30th, 2012 3:15 pmNice collection this month! Pretty disappointed that “Winter City” isn’t available without the calendar, though. :(
Trying to help
December 2nd, 2012 7:11 pmI also wanted a non-calendar version. Obviously all credit to the original artist (Sarfaraz Ansari) but this is an edited version:

November 30th, 2012 4:08 pmEvery design has its own specialty.
But when it comes to uniqueness, all x-mas designs flies away and Mayan Calendar wins the race.

November 30th, 2012 6:02 pmI agree that Mayan is a great design, and I would use it if it were called Aztec, but as a Mexican, I can’t use the Aztec Stone of the Sun when it’s labeled Mayan… It just feels wrong…

December 1st, 2012 4:49 amI agree with you, the design is fabulous, but really is a big mistake, sorry.

December 1st, 2012 5:39 pmCan’t you just change the file name? The person who designed it is probably unaware that they had made that mistake.
Kelly Jepsen
December 3rd, 2012 4:52 amI’m sorry, why does this affect your use of the wallpaper?
Kathleen Clohessy
December 3rd, 2012 6:10 pmI have to agree the others. The design came from someone in the Ukraine..Perhaps he or she isn’t as up on ancient Mexican culture as you would like but how does that affect your use of the design? Change the name if it offends you., or just don’t use it but don’t make a BIG DEAL out of someone’s obviously unintentional mistake.
For the record I love the Crazy Elf..that’s what I’ll be looking at until January 2013
Ernesto
December 3rd, 2012 9:30 pmI don’t think anyone is making a big deal. But, as designers, aren’t we supposed to have a high attention to detail?

November 30th, 2012 4:18 pmWonderful collection and I find especially inspiring December by Vlad Gerasimov

December 1st, 2012 1:14 amI love ‘December’ also. The background image isn’t intrusive enough to where it’s hard to read folder names on my desktop. It has a nice subtle pattern to it. And it has a little programming to it with a nice balance of colors and design. Definitely a keeper!

December 1st, 2012 6:44 amWinter Garphee speaks to me. The simple candle flicker; the lights on in the distant house; smoke from the chimney; the star of Bethlehem (I’m assuming) shining brightly . So lonely, yet so warm. Thanks Razvan!

agreeable.
Thanks S.M.

December 1st, 2012 6:10 pmIt would have been nice to see some wallpapers displaying the nativity, since the real purpose of Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus…
Jason
December 3rd, 2012 5:38 pmWithout wanting to turn this into a full-fledged discussion on religion, a family and community celebration on the darkest day of the year is as old as dirt. You might also ask for a Yuletide or Saturnalia calendar, both of which predate the “birth of Christ”. Anyway, all the best of season’s greetings to you!
Fire and Mirth
December 5th, 2012 3:47 amAgreed. I enjoyed the Mayan references (Christmas in Advance + Maya), but the list was otherwise swamped with Santa + snow. I would have loved something for those of us down here in the southern hemisphere. But even more, I would have loved a beautiful nativity scene. If you’re going to choose to represent Christmas anyway (Santa certainly doesn’t represent Hanukkah), why not capture the meaning of Christmas at least once?

December 1st, 2012 7:34 pmThis time around I like the Snowglobe and the House of the Birds (which is the one I’m currently using), both of which are very cute.
Whatever happened to the little owl and bird wallpapers which I absolutely adored?
Thanks very much. I always come to your site first for my desktop backgrounds… :)

December 1st, 2012 10:04 pmIf it was at least one wallpaper for 1024*600, for netbooks… I had to cut them to fit the screen parameters.

Estreitta
December 2nd, 2012 6:18 amI am a regular downloader of the desktop wall paper on your site and many I have loved. I just wish there was at least one that represented the true meaning of CHRISTmas. It didnt have to be overtly pushing Christian… but maybe one with the Star in the sky and the Wise men in a silhouette overlooking Nazareth and a calendar. Something to maybe think of for the future.

December 2nd, 2012 7:05 amNiceeeeeeeeeee! love all them.

December 3rd, 2012 8:52 amHi guys, thanks for selecting my artwork – Frosty Globe – I am very proud of this!
There is a small issue here, could you please change the link on my name to zitec.com (instead of zitec.ro)? This is the main domain, thank you very much!

December 3rd, 2012 11:52 pmThe calendar is wrong on “Christmas Wishes” by Bharat Kv from India. Dec. 1 was a Saturday. Kind of important . . .
The calendar on “Sweet December” is wrong, too. The column heading for Sunday is spelled SO instead of the universally accepted SU. I understand that he’s German, but, again, accuracy is kind of important . . .
Claudio Lione
December 4th, 2012 10:36 pmI agree with you, accuracy is important. I realised and corrected the mistake and send the files, but it was too late. If you want the wallpaper with the right SU … you can download it from https://dl.dropbox.com/u/18236934/Wallpaper_corrected.zip

December 4th, 2012 1:31 amDecemberist 1680×1050 with calendar says ‘December 2013′. Time really does fly. But, at least we made it past the Mayan Apocalypse !

December 4th, 2012 5:32 pmFrosty Globe is nice but I would like to have it on my desktop without Zitec written. ;)
Seth
December 4th, 2012 5:54 pmToo many of these were a bit obvious and juvenile this month if I’m honest, not feeling the Santas.
Few great ones though, the far and away winner was ‘December’ by Vlad Gerasimov, really appeals to the geek in me.
Other worthy mentions are ‘Decemberist’ with its dubsteppy vibe and ‘Christmas in Advance’, love the clean design and festive color scheme.
See you all in January!

December 5th, 2012 3:53 amHoliday Hand Lettering by Stephen Kistner is awesome. Nice bold hand drawn snowflake that “pops” from the background with a universal Happy Holidays! message. It’s my favorite.

December 5th, 2012 7:07 pmEvery design holds its one unique creativity with excellent art direction. If I had to pick a favorite it would be “Christmas Snowflakes” Magdalena Vinterova from Slovakia. It is Christmas themed but strays away from the standard green and red colors and brings something completely new and radiant to the holidays. This entire collection has great variety with fabulous non-traditional designs, which is risky, but in this case I believe had a great outcome.

December 5th, 2012 11:53 pmCool wallpapers! Thank you all!
I like them all, I can’t even choose :)

December 6th, 2012 12:00 pmI don’t know what are some complains & grunts for here. It’s all free, and y’all know it… Have some attitude, people. Attitude! lol.
Anyway, Happy Christmas & may we all have a merrier New Year! (Don’t nit-pick me)
Thanks for the whole SM Gang & for sharing so much constructive articles & rich posts through this tough year!
I’ll see you all next year! Hopefully with something to share back at you.
Oh, and thanks to all of those free wallpaper contributors. They’re all beautiful just for being made. I do agree, though, real-life photography is missing it’s portion. ;-)

December 21st, 2012 2:11 pmMore than one of these has an incorrect calendar. It would be nice if they were judged for both design appeal and accuracy. I find it surprising that the calendars are wrong!
