Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months.

And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?

CSS3 Cheat Sheet (PDF)

Just last week we released an extensive printable HTML 5 Cheat Sheet that lists all currently supported HTML 5 tags, their descriptions, their attributes and their support in HTML 4. In comments to this post we received many requests for a similar CSS 3 cheat sheet that would present the main features of CSS 3 in a handy, printable reference card.

So we asked our friend Chris Hanscom from Veign.com (who created the HTML 5 cheat sheet) to create a quick reference card for CSS 3. We already encouraged you to experiment with CSS 3 in our last posts and now you can use this handy cheat sheet to use the new CSS 3 features in some modern browsers (Firefox 3.5, Opera 9.6, Safari 3+, Google Chrome and Co.). The result is a printable CSS 3 scrib sheet, created and released exclusively for the readers of Smashing Magazine. Thank you for your great work, Chris Hanscom!

CSS 3 Cheat Sheet

In this post we present a printable CSS 3 Cheat Sheet (PDF), a complete listing of all the properties, selectors types and allowed values in the current CSS 3 specification from the W3C. Each property is provided in a section that attempts to match it with the section (module) that it is most actively associated within the w3c specification. Next to each property is a listing of the expected values that that property takes (normal text shows named values it accepts and italics shows value types it will accept).

HTML 5 Cheat Sheet (PDF)

XHTML 2 is dead, long live HTML 5! According to W3C News Archive, XHTML 2 working group is expected to stop work end of 2009 and W3C is planning to increase resources on HTML 5 instead. And even although HTML 5 won’t be completely supported until 2022 (yes, 2022), it doesn't mean that it won't be widely adopted within the foreseeable future.

HTML 5 Cheat Sheet

So in the spirit of the upcoming change we decided to release a handy printable HTML 5 Cheat Sheet that lists all currently supported tags, their descriptions, their attributes and their support in HTML 4. The cheat sheet was created by our friends from Veign and released exclusively for the readers of Smashing Magazine.

The Upcoming Smashing Book

Our biggest and most important project of the year, the Smashing Book, has come in swinging. Eleven extensive articles have been written, as decided by our readers. They are at various stages of completion. Creating a book ultimately requires more effort and dedication than online articles because, in the end, nothing can be changed, and readers have to pay for a physical product.

book2

We have tried to keep errors to a minimum; several correction cycles were required: hard times for our proofreader Andrew Lobo. The writing was done (in alphabetical order) by Adelle Charles, Alessandro Cattaneo, Andrew Maier, Chris Spooner, Darius A. Monsef (Colourlovers), David Leggett, Dmitry Fadeyev, Jacob Gube, Jon Tangerine (partial editing), Rene Schmidt, Steven Snell, Sven Lennartz and Vitaly Friedman.

The book will have 313 pages and 11 chapters, printed completely in color.

We have reserved 100 copies for review purposes. These are for magazines, blogs and other editorial publications in our industry. All publications, both small and new or old and large, are eligible to receive a free copy for review. But copies are limited. Simply head over to our email form, select "Book Review Copy" as your subject (this is important), type in your name, your postal address and the title and the URL of your blog / magazine / publication (this is important, too) – and that's it!

Unfortunately, we have received way too many requests already – no requests are accepted any longer.
