The Smashing Coffee Mug Photo Contest: Join In!

Here's a task for you! Have a look at your desk, take a shot of your beloved coffee mug, send us the photo, and see if you're added to the huge poster that we'll be creating from the best images that we get from all over the world. We'll prepare an exclusive version in PDF and print a limited-edition poster (20 copies).

If your photo is chosen, your name will be printed on the poster, too. In addition, selected photos will be published in an upcoming Smashing Magazine post. Those with the most creative and original submissions will be awarded with one of the exclusive printed wall posters. We won't be selling it, of course — but you already knew that.

To Five Smashing Years… And A Free Anniversary eBook Treat!

When we started Smashing Magazine, we didn’t expect anything. We didn’t have a grand master plan for a successful online magazine for designers and developers. We created something that we found useful and that we thought others would find useful, too. We did not lose focus, we relied on instinct more than once, we stayed patient, and we pulled the occasional night shift. That was 2006.

And then you came along.

You have passed the word along, left comments, dropped us emails. You let us know that we matter. You let us know that we are doing something meaningful. And you let us know that our humble work deserved your attention. And we listened — carefully.

Welcome To Smashing Coding!

Every now and again our Smashing Editorial team gets requests for very specific articles on very specific topics. Since our audience is very large and diverse, until now we weren't able to present these articles in our magazine and so we were looking for ways to change that. And we found a solution. Today, we are glad to announce that we've launched Smashing Coding, an extended section on Smashing Magazine which will contain more technical, advanced articles on programming and coding — be it JavaScript, PHP, Ruby or programming in general.

Smashing Coding will be curated by our new editor Keir Whitaker. We will make sure to produce verified, high-quality articles in the brand new section. Please take a closer look at the section and let us know if you find any bugs or errors. Thanks, and we are looking forward to meeting you on the pages of our new little project!

Smashing Book 2: Why We Love It And Why You’ll Love It, Too

Two and a half months ago, the Smashing Book 2 was released. For us, a small independent publisher, it was a big deal, because this ambitious project on which we had been working since July 2010 was also very important for Smashing Magazine. We spent a tremendous amount of time and effort on the little and big details of the book. It was very important for us to get it right this time: to create an outstanding, high-quality book and provide outstanding, high-quality service to our readers.

In this post, we’d like to provide some insight into the book’s production that we have gained during the process. And if you haven’t purchased the book yet, maybe you’ll want to buy both printed Smashing Books for a special price.
