The Smashing Book: Join In!

No, we're not giving anything away in this post. Instead, we've got some work to do, and we need you to play an important role in it. Our most interesting (and important) project for 2009 is something we are modestly calling "The Smashing Book": a smashingly written, beautifully designed and professionally printed book. It will be created by and for the Web design community. Four key decisions have already been made: the book's title will be "The Smashing Book"; it will be a paperback; the price is fixed, as is the release date, which is early September 2009.

The Smashing Book

We want to create a totally unique and exciting book, full of insightful and useful articles; a book that contains only articles that a reader of Smashing Magazine would really want to read. No fluff, no cruft, just hearty meat and potatoes content.

To achieve this, we need the help of our community: your help. And what could be better than working on this important project together with our readers? If you want to participate in our project, please visit the forum (the registration is required for replies) and help in any of the following ways.

Showcase Of Brilliant Comic Book Cover Art

From Rudolph Töpffer and Wilhelm Bush’s precursors to modern-day incarnations, comics have been a large part of popular culture for generations. Growing over the ages through contributions to the genre from Christophe Chabouté, Angelo Agostini and, of course, Richard Outcault, this then-revolutionary new way for artists to create and deliver a narrative exploded throughout the art world, leaving a lasting mark that would mature over the years, morphing into a mainstream artistic medium. Today, with a more stylized focus on heroic tales and dark worlds beyond the imagination, this genre continuously churns out amazing artwork from some extremely talented artists.

Batman

In this inspirational installment, we look at some of the wonderful works over the years that have graced the covers of comics -- art that has delighted and dazzled fans and non-fans alike from shelves and displays across the globe, the kind of works that tempt those not usually taken by this genre to give it another look or to pick up a book for the first time. We feel these impressive feats that draw this kind of attention and inspire this kind of adoration deserve a showcase, so we proudly present examples of brilliant comic book cover art!

Books Giveaway: Comment and Win!

Over the last weeks we have again selected dozens of useful development and web design-related books, we've bought all of them and we wanted to give them all away to our readers — for free. Unfortunately, it turned out that some books were unavailable, some were sold out and some are still waiting for the next edition. Consequently, we've decided to give away at least the books which are available now and keep the rest for future give-aways.

Well, why would we do that? Basically, for four reasons: first, we truly appreciate our readers' support, trust and interest and we want to give something back. Second, we want to make the Web a better place and encourage designers to help us in achieving this aim. Third, we like to smash things. And well, fourth, we can afford it.

Excellent Book Covers and Paperbacks

Book covers are hard to design and nice to look at. An effective book cover manages to catch human's eye and convey the idea behind the book on one single page. However, it's getting even harder: to make a book really hard to forget, designers need to design the cover in a unique, creative and striking way. That's not that different from Web where it's important to build a sound information architecture upon a rather restricted design layout.

Book Covers - Book Covers

The main idea of this post is to provide you with some creative, expressive and appealing book covers. You won't like all of them, but you'll definitely find some designs which are worth pondering upon.
