Smashing Community WordPress Theme: Comment and Win!

While the Smashing Community icon set is being designed and prepared for the release, we would like to ask your opinion about the WordPress theme that you would like us to design. And here’s how it works: you tell us what Wordpress-theme you need, and then we design it together with PSD to WordPress and release it for free.

Two days ago, we invited you to participate in the Smashing Community Icon Set event, in which you would tell us what icons you want and we would design them for you together with the design agency SoftFacade of Russia. Indeed, we were overwhelmed by the amount of ideas and suggestions. Overall, we received over 430 comments in our announcement post and in the forum. We identified over 120 (!) various ideas, combined them according to similarity and ranked them in order of popularity. We ended up with the seven most popular ideas.

And now it is your turn to decide which icon set we should design. Please vote for your favorite set in the poll below. And please spread the word so that as many users as possible can participate, so that the set that is truly most wanted by the community is chosen. You have 48 hours.

Smashing Community Icon Set: Comment and Win!

Ready for this? Here's how it works: you tell us what icons you need, and then we design them together with SoftFacade (which recently created the beautiful Smashing Retro Icon Set) and release them for free. And to make it a bit more interesting, we'll smash six commenters and forum participants with original nerdy gifts. To participate, just suggest an idea for a great useful icon set in the comments to this post or in this forum thread. Details are below.

Just let us know what icon set you would like us to design (and, if possible, what specific icons the set should contain) in the comments to this post or in this forum thread. The set may contain at most eight icons.

Why should you get gifts only on Christmas and your birthday? We at Smashing Magazine love to give away things all year long. This time, you have a chance to get some really cool hardware.

Taking part in this giveaway is easy... well, maybe not that easy. We're keen on seeing a lot of comments and want to see at least 5,000 comments in this post, so spread the word and help us get to 5,000 or more comments and then win one of the smashing prizes below.

Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 X2

The 5,000 comment challenge is important, folks. If we don't reach that goal, then the prizes get torched. Okay, they don't get torched, but the giveaway only kicks in after 5000 comments. It is not a random, unrealistic figure either; we got 3,800 comments in our recent books giveaway.

The <hr>-Contest Results – Download your fresh <hr>-line now!

Three weeks ago we have encouraged our readers to participate in our <hr>-contest by designing beautiful and creative horizontal lines. It was necessary, since this design-element was slowly disappearing and was often neglected in web design. But it is going to change now. We have received 1290 images and source-files from 384 designers across the globe. The result is an impressive collection of horizontal lines that designers can use for free without any restrictions whatsoever.

Many entries contained not only images, but also source-files, mostly for Photoshop or Illustrator. You can use them if you want to modify a design for your projects. For this purpose we packed these files in one .zip-archive with all source-files (109 files, 25 Mb). Of course, it would be better to provide the link to a .zip-package next to each of the designs presented below, but it would take many hours of work which we can actually use in a more effective way. We can not guarantee that all images in the .zip-package are correct as we haven't tested all of them.

Unfortunately, some entries could not be considered for the contest. They didn't meet our requirements, were too big or unusable. It was important for us that these files could be used in projects beyond the scope of our contest.

The <hr /> Contest

What is <hr />? Basically, it is an old HTML-tag which has been used since the very beginning of the Web. hr stands for the horizontal rule and represents exactly what you would expect — a horizontal line or a horizontal divider.

By default, web browsers render hr as a simple horizontal line. In terms of semantics the tag is supposed to clearly separate content blocks. This is often used in design of footers, but also makes sense in other situations — for instance, if you want to separate two blog posts or make the divisions within the content structure sharper.

Similar to our blog header contest we’d like to create a smashing gallery of freely available <hr /> graphics. The winner will get a Wacom Intuos3 9X12 USB Tablet.

Smashing Author Contest: Results

One month ago we announced the guest author contest, with the main prize being an Apple MacBook Air. We received 252 submissions. The choice was tough and time-consuming as we wanted to have a nice mix of various articles participating in the contest. In the end we have selected 15 articles and published them last week.

Top 10 CSS Table Designs

We have considered various details to determine the winner of the contest: in particular, we considered the degree of utility, traffic, the quality of comments, the quality of backlinks and the poll results. The final decision was not based upon our personal preferences, but on the decision of our readers and their activities.
