Desktop Wallpaper Calender: March 2008

Creativity is all about being stubborn, reluctant, uncompromising or simply different. Unique ideas are becoming necessary, conformity to standards superflous and pointless. Few weeks ago we've published an overview of some (really) stunning desktop wallpapers. Researching for some excellent wallpapers, we've stumbled upon Patricia Villanueva's weblog with her sometimes bold, sometimes intriguing, sometimes crazy, but always creative, unusual and incredibly personal works.

That's why we've contacted Patricia, a 29-year-old graphics designer from Mexico-City, and asked her to create English versions of her monthly desktop wallpapers for Smashing Magazine. Patricia agreed. Result: a very special desktop wallpaper calendar for March 2008.

Desktop Wallpaper

You can download the wallpaper in 4 widescreen resolutions: 1920×1200, 1680×1050, 1440×900, 1280x800. A .zip-archive with all resolutions is also packed in a wallpaper-pack and is available for free download.

Please notice: we are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. You don't know it yet, but your work may be featured in one of our upcoming posts.

Grunge Style In Modern Web Design

Most design trends come unexpectedly, evolve over time, become pointless and finally disappear from the design landscape. This holds particularly for web design, which is — just as every other creative field — prone for over-hyping and over-usage of trends. Being used excessively (sometimes properly, but mostly without any reasonable purpose), trends lose their ability to communicate information, express something unique or innovative and consequently lose their visual appeal.

Web 2.0 style is an excellent example for this evolution in design. In the last months of 2007 we've observed a clear example of design abuse, as glossy buttons, colorful reflections, 3D-effects, rounded corners and xx-large font sizes could be found almost everywhere (and we've presented some examples a year ago). However, currently we've been observing a new step in this evolution. Web 2.0 elements start to disappear; they become more subtle, more user-centric, more content-oriented and less loud. Is it a sign for coming changes?

Below we've collected everything you would ever need for a perfect design in a grunge style — design examples, free fonts, icons, textures, brushes and even few tutorials.

Icons For Your Desktop and Icons For Your Web Designs

The value of icons lies in their ability to communicate with visitors or users in a more intuitive and effective way. Jakob Nielsen, the maestro of usability, postulated few years ago that "recognition rather than recall" is one of the basic heuristics for user-friendly design. In fact, it's necessary to "minimize the user's memory load by making objects, actions, and options visible. The user should not have to remember information from one part of the dialogue to another. Instructions for use of the system should be visible or easily retrievable whenever appropriate."

Icons are supposed to achieve just that. And this is why it's useful to actually use them both on your desktop and in your web design. They can reduce the complexity of the design and make it easier to get from point A to point B.
