Two Days Left To Enter Guest Author Contest

We would like to remind you that the deadline for our guest author contest is approaching. Best guest articles will be published on Smashing Magazine with the link to the author’s site. The best guest post will be awarded with Apple MacBook Air. Apart from that then further writers will be awarded with designer laptop sleeves, bags and books.

MacBook Air

Participation is easy. To get a chance to win one of the prizes it's enough to submit a short discussion article (max. 1200 characters) or an original and beautiful top-10-list. Further details, rules and awards can be found in the original article. We have received 90 entries so far. Thanks to all participants!

The main idea behind the contest is not to get as many guest articles as possible, but to find talented guest authors who will want to work with us after the contest and get properly paid for their work. If you would like to write for us beyond the contest — drop us a line, we’ll figure something out.

Two days are left. You can submit your article and top-10-list until 23:59, 5th of August 2008.

Get creative, folks!

Not all of them were available which is why we've decided to give away at least the books which are available now and keep the rest for future giveaways. Consequently, we provided you with the opportunity to win 8 of them in our book giveaway.

Books Giveaway: Comment and Win!

Over the last weeks we have again selected dozens of useful development and web design-related books, we've bought all of them and we wanted to give them all away to our readers — for free. Unfortunately, it turned out that some books were unavailable, some were sold out and some are still waiting for the next edition. Consequently, we've decided to give away at least the books which are available now and keep the rest for future give-aways.

Well, why would we do that? Basically, for four reasons: first, we truly appreciate our readers' support, trust and interest and we want to give something back. Second, we want to make the Web a better place and encourage designers to help us in achieving this aim. Third, we like to smash things. And well, fourth, we can afford it.

Transcending CSS

In this post we are giving away 8 professional web design-related books — the books cover the topics CSS, usability, user interface design, innovation, web navigation, web form design and JavaScript programming. Hopefully, the winners of the books will be able to widen their horizon in web development and create more effective, more user-friendly and more beautiful web designs.

Winners of the Logo Contest

Smashing Magazine Logo Winner

It took us five days in a row to find five best designs for our Smashing Magazine Logo Contest. It was hard and it was a neck-and-neck race for 5 competitors. You can find selected designs in the article Logo Contest - Sketches and Designs.

And now we have the winner.

It was a tough decision to choose 5 best logos from over 190 sketches. Our choice might not look reasonable for all of you, but you have to keep in mind that the logo should fit perfectly to our color scheme and our site layout. We had to create many screenshots with different logo variation and check, whether the look we get is optimal. Not every beautiful logo we liked first passed this test, so only "bulletproof" logos remained.

Logo Contest: Sketches and Designs

Smashing Magazine Logo Content

It was a tough decision to make. Three weeks ago we've announced the Smashing Magazine Logo Contest for the most creative, clean and fresh logo for our site. We've received over 190 Logos from 105 participants, living all around the world. We had a big choice and it wasn't easy to select the winner. After all, the logo shouldn't be just creative or gorgeous - it should fit to our web-site perfectly.

In our decision we've considered many aspects such as typographic clarity, used color schemes, ideas, simplicity and, of course, design. We've taken our time and selected the best works five days in a row. In the end it was a neck-and-neck race for 5 competitors.

We'd like to thank every participant of our contest. We really appreciate your creativity, your work and your time.

We'll announce the winner tomorrow. Today, however, we'd like to present most original and interesting works we've received. Not every sketch is gorgeous, so not every design will be presented.

Thanks, guys. Your participation means a hell of a lot to us.
