The result: hundreds and hundreds of sets available almost everywhere, usually not that well executed and often duplicated from other sets. However, there are indeed free high-quality icon sets. Adobe Photoshop Tutorials – Best Of

When it comes to graphic design, Adobe Photoshop is usually the first option to consider. However, the software itself is a quite tough nut to crack — and definitely extremely hard to master. For instance, the concepts are not always intuitive and it's not always clear when to use what tool and how to use it effectively. In fact, in Photoshop it usually takes pretty much time to achieve something you have never done before.

However, you don't need to muddle through numerous Photoshop features and extensions for every design problem. You can use professional suggestions instead, e.g. professional step-by-step tutorials which provide excellent results and thus can save you a lot of time.

Icons For Your Desktop and Icons For Your Web Designs

The value of icons lies in their ability to communicate with visitors or users in a more intuitive and effective way. Jakob Nielsen, the maestro of usability, postulated few years ago that "recognition rather than recall" is one of the basic heuristics for user-friendly design. In fact, it's necessary to "minimize the user's memory load by making objects, actions, and options visible. The user should not have to remember information from one part of the dialogue to another. Instructions for use of the system should be visible or easily retrievable whenever appropriate."

Icons are supposed to achieve just that. And this is why it's useful to actually use them both on your desktop and in your web design. They can reduce the complexity of the design and make it easier to get from point A to point B.

Creative Favicons: Tiny Artwork

Since visual elements are easier to remember, they can be used to draw visitors' attention to the brand identity of the site. As visual indicators, favicons can establish the communication with visitors and make a web-site easier to remember and get back to once you need it - for instance, once the visitors look for the site in their bookmarks. Still most sites don't make use of them - just like 404-error-pages, favicons are often forgotten or simply ignored. It's time to change that, folks. Every once and again we present some of the most creative and beautiful favicons — to prompt you to design them for your sites. In fact, we are willing to do that until the trend is finally established. The design of favicons might look like a simple task; however to
  • make the design recognizable,
  • keep it simple and
  • combine visual identity with
  • visual clarity
  • within a 16x16 rectangle
is a creative challenge you shouldn't underestimate. The details build the foundation of a successful logo, and to take care of the smallest details is extremely important for a usable and visually appealing favicon. The images below can be clicked - apparently, they lead to the sites from which the favicons have been taken. The examples show not only how a well-designed favicon might look like, but also which creative approaches can be used to give a favicon the freshness and clarity it deserves. The examples also demonstrate how favicons can support the overall design of the site it is being used on. 20+ Free And Fresh Icon Sets

User-friendly icon sets are always nice to look at and useful to have ready to hand. Since effective designers guide their users' attention using visuals, icons can (and probably should) be used in almost every project you are or will be working on. Whether for an illustration, sketch, site or weblog - used moderately, icons can point users' attention to the key-aspects of an article or specific site sections and communicate the message of the site in a more effective way.

This is why web designers need them. And this is why we look for them. Regularly.
