Breathtaking Typographic Posters

You can't design without type. However, yon can use only type (or mostly only type) to create breath-taking designs. In fact, many graphic designers and artists take exactly this route to communicate their ideas through their works. The results are sometimes crazy, sometimes artsy, sometimes beautiful, but often just different from things we're used to. Thus designers explore new horizons and we explore new viewing perspectives which is what inspiration is all about.

This post showcases over 50 breathtaking typographic posters designed by artists across the globe. We feature Oriental, Iranian, Hebrew, Japanese, Chinese and Russian typographic posters as well as a number of further references. This isn't a "best of", there is no ranking and the collection isn't supposed to be complete; it's rather subjective and quite random. All screenshots are clickable; however, links not always lead directly to the corresponding image (e.g. it's impossible in Flash-based sites) — sometimes you'll need to search for it.

You may also want to take a look at the article Typography In Motion we've published few months ago.

So what can be achieved out of simple letters and symbols? Please be patient, some screenshots are huge.

Typography In Motion

In most designs typography is used to present information in a rather static way — after all, it has to be read by users. However, it doesn't have to be like this. What effects can be achieved if typography is set in motion? What happens if letters are suddenly floating, jumping and dancing around while sentences are actually interacting with the readers?

Typography in Motion

Where motion is involved, video is necessary. Below we present some excellent examples of typography embedded into movies and videos — be prepared, "dynamic" typography can be breathtaking.

40+ Excellent Freefonts For Professional Design

The importance of typography in design can't be overestimated. The accuracy, precision and balance of geometric forms can give letters the elegance and sharpness they deserve. Besides, elegant fonts can help to convey the message in a more convenient way. In fact, while there are many excellent professional fonts (we've presented some of them in our article 80 Beautiful Typefaces For Professional Design) there are literally thousands of free low-quality fonts which you would never use for professional designs.

Quality costs. The price of "bulletproof" fonts usually reflects their quality and starts at 50$ per typeface. However, before purchasing a font you will probably use only once in your designs you might want to take a glance at outstanding free alternatives first.

Mido STF

Over the last year we've been observing typo-designers and their works; we've regularly collected high-quality fonts available for free download and free to use for personal or/and commercial projects. In this article we'd like to present an overview of over 40 excellent free fonts you might use for your professional designs in 2008. What is your favourite?

The Showcase Of BIG Typography

The main advantage of excellent typography lies in its ability to be both attractive and functional at the same time. Although images communicate more vividly, text presentation can impress visitors with its sharpness and precise geometrical forms and curves. Consequently, chosen wisely and used carefully, it can be very effective — and there are dozens of outstanding examples of how the latter can be achieved.

However, web typography doesn't have to support the overall design. It can dominate. It can be loud. It can be bold. And it can be everywhere on a web-site. In many situations it's reasonable to give the typography the prominent position it deserves, leaving visual cues in the background or removing them at all. Doing that, you have to risk large font sizes surrounded by a generous amount of white space. What comes out of it? Elegant web sites with a unique form, style and sense of precision.

Typo Screenshot

In this article we present over 35 examples of big, "loud" and yet elegant typography in web design; some listed designs are Flash-based, and in some cases designs are based not only upon typography, but also upon some visual elements.

  • You might be interesting in the showcase of simple and clean designs we've published before.

Free Fonts of the Month: Revalo, Nadia Serif, Qlassik

Sometimes web design is just about beautiful typography. Used with a profound understanding of white space, basic typographic principles and usability heuristics, it can sufficiently highlight the main sections of the site and its key-elements. Font size of headers, body copy and navigation is important. Leading is important. Line length is important. And the visibility of links is important. Basically, that's it - really, you don't need more.

There are literally thousands of professional typefaces you can use, you might use dozens of them; however there is also a plenty of high-quality freefonts which can serve as reasonable and feasible alternatives and fulfill your requirements just as well. We collect all of them regularly, so you don't have to.

Smashing Free Font and WordPress-Theme

As our Smashing First Anniversary celebration ends, we'd like to wrap up our event with two further presents for each and every one of our readers. In August we've asked Jos Buivenga, a Dutch typo-designer who has created profesional freefonts such as Delicious to design a special typeface dedicated to the Smashing Magazine First Anniversary. Jos has agreed to get a "smashing" freefont done just in time. We've also asked Elena Gafita from the DesignDisease team — well-known for its professional Wordpress themes such as Blogging Pro — to design a special Wordpress-Theme dedicated to our anniversary. Despite deadlines Elena agreed and promised to get a "smashing" Wordpress-Theme done just in time.
