Smashing Cartoons is a new regular section on Smashing Magazine. Every Friday we will be publishing a new cartoon created by Ricardo Gimenes, the creative mind of Behind the Websites. The cartoon will be dedicated to design and web development, but also have a comic twist about everything happening around the Web and give you some insights behind the curtains of Smashing Magazine. Also, on this page we will be collecting all issues of the Smashing Cartoon for your convenience. You will also find the latest cartoon on the sidebar of our pages.
We are looking forward to your feedback and your ideas!

The Smashing Editorial loves high-quality content and cares about little details. We also believe that content and design are crafts worth sharpening.
Oh, God, WHEN WILL YOUR COMICS MAKE SENSE??
Comic: “Fleaty is a geek bug.”
I’m thinking, “Okay, so this is a comic about software bugs.”
Comic: “Fleaty loves technology.”
Brain: “Okay, I’m sorta with you. More advanced tech means harder-to-understand bugs. Oh, look, IE9 is there. I guess they’re saying there are bugs in IE9. Somehow the bug is supposed to be endearing.”
Comic: “Unfortunately, technology hates him.” [IE9 spraying poison at him and I guess killing him.]
Brain: “Okay… Um… okay….. Um…. WTF. IE9 eliminates bugs? IE9 eliminates geeks? IE9 eliminates the wrong bugs? IE9 is somehow exclusionary? Using the transitive property, IE9 is anti-technology because it is anti-technology-bugs?? AHHH!!!! WHY DO YOU MAKE MY BRAIN EXPLODE???”
Please hire someone who can tell a simple story, because try as I might, I can’t ever make heads or tails of your comics. I can’t even tell if they’re supposed to be funny. I can’t tell if they make a point remotely, and if so, what that point might possibly be. The best I can say about Smashing Magazine comics is that they are horrible, incomprehensible stories drawn pretty well. Sort of like a never-ending repetition of Waterworld, only with 250% more Kevin Costner.
no one’s forcing you to read them…
wow…
cant remember when last I spent 15 minutes on a single page.
Well done guys!
the last ones are really a waste of time. they’re not funny at all.
Make funny ones again or leave it.
thanks
hehehe, that was a good one: brazil -> netherlands…
I assume Spain will kick the Dutch back to Holland.
This is absolutely brilliant! Love it… and I’m sad Brazil got sent home, but happy that Spain rules.
cheers
worst post ever
They are just amazing! :D
Any chance of a cartoon showing how much thought, pain and re-design goes into pleasing the users that don’t care or notice anything :0)
Gosh these comics are lame. Great animation, awful, awful, content.
now..now… i just think you guys are germany fans (you should! :p)
ok, this is my prediction:
holland will go to the final against Spanish.
and let see then….^^
Norman: I agree, a link to a news article of some sort would be nice.
Basically Apple livestreamed their “event” (Salespitch) in a way that the only devices able to see it were theirs.
“Apple® will broadcast its September 1 event online using Apple’s industry-leading HTTP Live Streaming, which is based on open standards. Viewing requires either a Mac® running Safari® on Mac OS® X version 10.6 Snow Leopard®, an iPhone® or iPod touch® running iOS 3.0 or higher, or an iPad™.”
Note the “Based on Open Standards”-bit. That’s a bit like what they say on “Orange Juice” packaging.
“Worst post ever!”
:o)
I love it all and cry laughing with some :D
Amazing! :-)
pretty funny joke cartoon..
i love it !
I second Brock Peters. You guys are great illustrators, but your writing leaves much to be desired. Some comics don’t even make sense. #39. Web Battle? What’s the battle in the comic? I mean, I know the Flash/HTML5 reference, but how does the comic represent battling with the somersaults? Is it saying Flash has had to do a lot? Is it saying Flash is confused with the squiggly lines? What does the fading Flash logo mean? And then disappearing and re-appearing? Did Flash leave and then return? Does it mean HTML is not prepared? Or capable? Dear God, WHAT DOES IT MEAN??
Hire a writer. Better yet, hire a comedic writer. Better yet, a comedic writer who makes comics. Like Axe Cop.
Great style, very well done, but sadly there are at most 2 or 3 that actually made me laugh…
Amazing…will buy these artworks in a book form if it comes out…
MOM DAD WHERE DID I COM FROM ?
Cool
“Worst post ever” Do you remember this? Yes, yes you remember!! hahaha ohhh!! It was you!
nicely drawn but you guys need a writer, they are not funny even in the slightest.
yup, totally agree! the execution is nice, but the humour… seldom…..
Indeed Mr.Winters is so much better & so much funnier.
For wooden-headed individuals
The flash comic is supposed to mean that we ve all seen what flash can do in terms of features and ease of use proved by the numerous examples all over the web (flash ads not included)
so lets see how how html5 responds..
still waiting for HTML 5′s response.. grrr come on now don’t leave a dude hanging.. and #39 was COMPLETELY understandable.. just sayin..
…if you want to get beat up.
I see nothing funny guys, sorry.
Thanks for the advice, James. Designing for a 1024 pixel width monitor is pretty standard. Many people still use that size monitor. Especially on laptops and netbooks. For a site that specializes in web design, it’s kind of a silly mistake to make. Telling people to buy things to fix the website’s problem is a lazy snob’s excuse – it’s the same as a web designer ignoring their IE users and telling them to install FF.
And I’m in agreement with the majority of readers here – the comic’s not even funny!
ok.. i am still searching for the funny-ness here :(
Lol… The little IE character is funny… “WHAT!?”
Can’t wait for the series…

March 26th, 2010 8:46 amThis is a good description of what we feel for IE6 and its brothers about website rendering. Funny!

March 28th, 2010 7:42 amI wondered how far down the comments I’d have to read before I saw one like that. Cartoons/Comics are meant to be subjective. Each to their own and all that.

March 26th, 2010 10:38 amAww! The little ie character almost makes me like the browser. Almost.

March 27th, 2010 11:51 amVery good initiative! I’ve been longing for a smashing comic! Please make sure to put them up in a good manner so one can read them through a rss-reader or similar on the cellphones. I read all my comics on my phone while I’m on the subway or the likes.
Alex Köhler
March 27th, 2010 3:05 pmI don’t like IE5 6 7 8 either.
I do like cartoons.

You should add “Boo”, to make it funnier.

March 29th, 2010 6:33 amWhat the heck is wrong with you guys? Are you all zombified by the G trend? I am looking stupefied how an incredible large number of “followers” are turning normal people into Demi, or Semi Gods. It;s just a magazine composed of articles gathered form around the world. If you were to Google it, you’ll find just as that or better.
Cheers

March 30th, 2010 6:08 amsomeone please tell me what is funny about this.
William Lee
March 30th, 2010 12:34 pmSo this is a web design magazine? The page is broken in FF 3.6 on a 1024×786 monitor. The right edge of the comic overflows & gets hidden.
James
March 31st, 2010 4:18 pmYes this is a web design magazine. Site demographic would entail designers with FAR HIGHER resolution and therefore they may extend their site resolution higher….solution, buy a real monitor.
William Lee
March 31st, 2010 6:01 pmThanks for the advice, James.
Alexander Trefz
April 7th, 2010 11:47 amI have to agree. 1024px is standard. And its standard for SMag, too. They could provide solutions for higher resolutions but they have to make a version for 1024. Definitly.
The IPad is funny, but i dont get the IE one.
Carlos
March 31st, 2010 4:35 pmjajajajajaja, just love the second one… XD

April 2nd, 2010 3:51 amAdpaters?
Ricardo Gimenes
April 2nd, 2010 3:54 am“The designers of the iPad, in all their greatness, didn’t add any ports – that means no USB and no SD cards… But don’t worry, at extra charge, you can buy adapters. Hurray! Thanks Apple for providing…”

April 2nd, 2010 4:43 amGreat! Now you’ve killed IE6 am sure he is going strait to HELL! :)
Maciek
April 2nd, 2010 4:50 amIs ‘adpaters’ written this way on purpose (should be ‘adapters’ ?) or have you misspelt it?
Ricardo Gimenes
April 2nd, 2010 5:07 ammisspelt.
Vishesh
April 2nd, 2010 4:51 amThe adpater thing, looks really like a mispelling, rather than fun being poked. What was it meant to be? Otherwise, nice. :)

April 2nd, 2010 6:31 amJAjajaja.. so fun.. wonderfull comics.. very nice style.. good sens of humor and the best design magazine ever..
leighann
April 2nd, 2010 7:57 amthe iPad one is pretty cute, but the #1 cartoon literally took me 15 mins to get. its not very noticeable that the hand in the 5th frame is from IE. and the last pilot one is just kinda poorly designed. whats with all the negative space in the upper left hand corner? i get its a cartoon, but its a cartoon on a design blog.
Ricardo Gimenes
April 5th, 2010 7:42 amHi leighann, thanks for the iPad one :) The pilot is not a cartoon it is part of my blog, you can see a bit more poorly designed here http://behindthewebsites.com because I love negative space ;)

April 3rd, 2010 8:51 amThese characters have a name ? why you don´t give them a name, to every one of them; with the help of your readers. They have been created by you, however since they have been online, they belong “some way” to your audience, Don´t you think so ?
Magda
May 6th, 2010 5:22 amI think the characters are the company founders and employees himself. See the illustration in “About Smashing Magazine”….
As for the cartoons some are a bit way too geeky for me, but some are really cute!

April 9th, 2010 9:43 amHey Mr. Hate, I mean Mr.”H” about Smashing Comic again? As you can see it’s not another issue of the Smashing Comic, if you want help please tell me why you don’t like it, style? Subject? Ricardo Gimenes? etc…or you don’t like cartoons in general? It will help me to create a better cartoon ;) Don’t forget to come back here next Friday.

April 9th, 2010 12:07 pmHey men… nice cartoons!… well a feedback will be: Apple block using Flash CS5 compiler! this sould be a legal problem between Adobe and Apple
Tom
April 9th, 2010 5:36 pmI love the idea, but here’s where I have to say something no one else seems to have.
I’m guessing all of these cartoons need to be outsourced so they get made by a third party provider, right?.
What happened to Smashing Magazine being in dept and not having enough money to stay in business. That is what you guys asked all those people to buy your book for, right?.
If you’re tight on money, how the heck do you guys afford to do things like this?
