Free Fonts of the Month: FF Good, Segoe UI

Every now and again we take a look around, select “fresh” high-quality free fonts and present them to you in a brief overview. The choice is enormous, so the time you need to find them is usually the time you should be investing in your current projects. We search for them and we find them, so you don’t have too.

This month we’ve found two of them – FF Good and Segoe UI. It’s not quite clear if one is legally allowed to use Segoe UI, which is also presented below. Please read the license agreement carefully – it can change from time to time.

  • You can find over 50 more free fonts in our section Free Fonts1.

You might need to load the page two or more times until the right page appears. You’ll also need to register a free account to be able to download the typeface.

2. LTR DataMine (removed, since the font wasn’t working properly!)

According to the license, “The user of this LettError font software agrees to credit LettError as the trademark and copyright owner of the LettError fonts and list the font names, wherever and whenever design, production, or any other credits are shown.”

3. Segoe UI.

The design of Segoe UI improves the reading and scanning of text while leveraging ClearType. The overall approach to font size increase and font usage creates consistency across Windows and applications for a better experience in all languages.

Thank you, shikkaba, the article was edited.

  12. 12

I like the numbers of the first font. And I really like Smashing Magazine!! I love it!

  13. 13

The Segoe license renders it practically useless as a free font:
…Microsoft grants you a personal, nonexclusive, non-transferable, royalty-free license to install and use the Software solely for the purpose of creating materials requested by Microsoft” (important section bolded)

Chances are that any “free” font with a license topping 14 kb is less free than most of use would like—or are able—to use.

  14. 14

I’m 100% certain that you can’t use Segoe UI in your own designs. It’s the system font on Windows Vista and it’s only meant to appear in Windows displays. You can’t put it on a brochure and print it.

    Very nice selection of fonts!

  16. 16

If you want to get fully featured use out of Segoe UI, you might as well just use Frutiger/Frutiger Next instead, since Segoe UI is pretty much a blatant rip-off of Frutiger. There’s been a lot of controversy over the whole thing.

Don’t kid yourself. Just use Frutiger (or at least use Myriad, it’s close enough).

  17. 17

¡Wow! First font is fantastic. Very nice, and very clean.

  18. 18

Am trying to download Segoe UI but am getting Error 404
when I click on the download link.
Please help or is there an alternate link?

  19. 19

FF Good Wide Light is not more available (at least for me)… What a pity!
    Any alternate link?

  20. 20

Segoe UI is installed into Windows XP if the user installs Windows Live Mail,
