Acorn Icon Set For Free Download

In this post and in the previous1 one we release two beautiful professional icon sets that will hopefully meet your expectations and will come in handy in your projects.

Acorn Icon Set Link

This icon set was designed by Monica Corduneanu2 and released especially for Smashing Magazine and its readers. The set contains 17 beautiful icons-illustrations: an envelope, book, home, laidy and the tramp, magnifying glass, mister, mister and misses, newspaper, paperclip, pencil, rain, the French, the gangster, the kids, the reader, twins and, of course, the Smashing addict.

The download package (see links below) also includes the Adobe Illustrator source file. As always, the set is completely free and may be used for any private or commercial project without any restrictions whatsoever.

Motivation behind the design Link

As usual, here are some insights from the designer:

With the help of the „Mister Acorn” icon set I’ve managed to bring a piece of nature to life. It’s about a set composed of vectorial cartoon style icons, in witch the main caracter, mister acorn is shown in diferent situations. You can see the set as a voyage of the main caracter through the world, from Italy, the magical world of cartoons, to France.

At the same time, the icons are adapted to webdesign necessities containing specific elements. It’s a free to use icon set for non-commercial purpose released in png and ai formats.

So, if you thought that acorns don’t have a soul, well think again!

Best wishes, The Creator, Monica Corduneanu from Creatures Land6.

Thank you, Monica! Please let us know in the comments if this release meets your expectations. And if not, please let us know what we could improve in the upcoming releases!

Sometimes I think, I shouldn’t leave this site anymore, because I could miss something. Your quicker than Lucky Luke can shoot. :)

  2. 2

This is beautiful. Not very useful but Beautiful.
    Thanks :-)

  3. 3

    Very nice icons, thanks!

  4. 4

Are they icons? No, those images break all the principles of icon design!

I have to say, this is definitely the weirdest icon set I’ve seen on Smashing Magazine :-)

  6. 6

Acorns? I mean, they’re nice and all, but not very practical I suppose. Perhaps if i made some stickers out of them and give it to my niece to stick it on her school folders. :-P

  7. 7

    this is retarded.

  8. 8

What the hell? They’re cute and all, but not very useful.

  9. 9

    thanks so much

  10. 10

So who do you have to have sex with to get your icon set on smashing magazine?

  11. 11

might just be the ugliest thing i’ve seen. like, ever.

  12. 12

hmm… first to show me a practical use with these thingemajiggs (not icons, not illustrations, what are they?) get’s a beer from me!

  13. 13

Acorns! I love the one where they’re all jammed into a birdshouse of some sort… That’ll be of use some time! Seriously.

  14. 14

the best icon ever!... .... ...

    April 27, 2009 7:35 am

” bring a piece of nature to life. ” some things are better left dead….

  15. 15

    I think it’s hilarious! I love the love-acorns. It reminds me of my favorite song, “I’m a nut”… ;)

  16. 16

You guys who complain should 1) read the artists’ insight 2) look at the large preview. On a cartoon style website they could become useful. They’re more specific, admitted, than most other icon sets but there are situation they might fit… And if not useful, at least they’re a beautiful piece of art =)

  17. 17

Thanks Guys! This is creative but, useless Icon set. Where would even use these?

  18. 18

i agree: they are very well designed. i imagine they’d be good for an ad.

    These are interesting ….

To me, they look kind of like chicken eggs. If the colors had been more brown and less gray it would be easier to tell that they are acorns.

Not really they quality I would expect from Smashing.

Felicitaciones a todos los colegas diseñadores en su día!!!!

  21. 21

hmm, not reaching the usual Smashing Magazine high standard, I’m afraid. Rather useless chocolate-box art I dare to say…

  22. 22

Would you people stop whining? It seems that some of you got a bit too used to freebies.
If you don’t like it don’t download it.

    What a bunch of losers….

  23. 23

This set is a bit deceiving, nice but not the quality i have grown to expect from Smashing Magazine …

  24. 24

    This icon set is nuts!

  25. 25

    Different, but very clever!
    Thanks, as always.

  26. 26

Now everyone is going to start using acorns because of this cool icon set =P Not really, but nice set nonetheless.

Can “Mr. Acorn” be our new mascot? lol – good job Monica.

  27. 27

    @ Alex

Please let us know in the comments if this release meets your expectations. And if not, please let us know what we could improve in the upcoming releases!

It appears Smashing supports constructive criticism.

  28. 28

I am sorry, those are just not up to par with Smashing’s standards. Ignominious.

  29. 29

Wow! I am just starting work on an acorn based website ( These are perfect! Thanks!

    April 27, 2009 11:05 am

I’m sorry some of you don’t appreciate the set.
It supposed to be funny, it’s 100% vectorial, and usefull for cartoon art creation :D

  31. 31

    April 27, 2009 11:37 am

    funny but can’t use them

  32. 32

    Super Monica!

Great for cartoon style sites :)

    Inca o data, felicitari!

  33. 33

i agree icons arent realistically useful. Where would one want to use them?? This article should have been tagged free cartoon character!

  34. 34

    okie dokie…

  35. 35

    Corduneanu Monica,

Its not about appreciation either for the set or your talents.
Nobody cares if you want to make an artistic statement in the form of Icons, go for it, but a place like deviant art might be a better showcase for such an exercise.

I think the readers of Smashing Magazine are looking for content that can be useful to them in a practical, real world application.
Your use of the Acorn has narrowed the usefulness of your contribution down to a level that does not support many opportunities for the icons to be used in a generic or common way. “Generic” or “Common” may be terms that will make many creative people cringe, however in this forum and the specific subject of “freebies” offered to the public, it would be wise to offer something that appeals to the masses and not the few.

  36. 36

this seems to have literally no use

    Leland Clemmons

    April 27, 2009 3:11 pm

Perhaps the only application these icons could have is on an site that sells acorns. Cool looking drawings – but they have little to no practical application.

  38. 38

I like it. I think people should put themselves in the shoes of a website owner. Don’t you think how SM people work hard to keep this website the best web resource ever ? Could you show a lil bit of appreciation at least. If this icons don’t fit your needs, fine, maybe for some other user it may be helpful. C’mon. Don’t be rude, people. Thanks Monica, and Thanks Smashing Magazine for providing us really good stuff FOR FREE!

  39. 39

These are definitely not icons…. they’re Acons!! Kudos for creativity. While they may not serve mainstream usefulness, they are certainly unforgettable.

  40. 40

    what? don’t touch that squirrel’s nuts! =]

  41. 41

Looks like a French men without legs. Maybe it’s Sarko.

  42. 42

To all who said this is not useful: I’m looking forward for the day you’ll need this for a client with a site requiring such a style (knowing already you’ll come with your tails between your legs ;) )

Monica, don’t get discouraged, these are awesome and reflect your talent, even if the area of use is limited.

Heck, if it wasn’t for creatives like Monica and others, we would be still facing tables and IE :)) Remember how long it took for developers to switch to CSS websites? Wasn’t that also look at with doubt? Even today, the swithching process goes on… Funny…

    @spritzstuhl : lol man :))

  44. 44

None of you re designers, The day I meet someone who can design, and design for print and screen…will be the day I die…
Designers are overrated, if u cant design for final product wether its print or screen..just STFU, you losers.
These icons are clever, and oh where is your submissions at so I can rip on your crappy art work

  45. 45

    sama creation

    April 28, 2009 2:59 am

    These are interesting

  46. 46

    @ 44, Mike

Dude..Are you for real? The only reason you can flame like that would be because you rock screen and print. 50 bucks and my aforementioned beer says you’re not rocking anything.
Designers are not overrated. The only reason you were able to make the comment that assured you look like an idiot, is because a designer made the comment form. He (or she) knew he (or she) had to think about the fact that people like yourself would need to post moronic comments on posts. The mere fact that you were able to post, shows designers are not overrated.

Furthermore; you claim that the icons are clever. Somehow you seem to find a purpose for these icons. If you’re as brilliant as you claim to be, I challenge you to show me a design where these acorns are used as icons and actually adding something to the whole. If you manage to do that, I’ll buy you a beer (paypal, you’ll have to buy it yourself, but I’ll sponsor you).

I don’t want to flame the designer of the icons. Obviously, she has some purpose for these thingemajiggs. The problem is that it’s promoted as an “icon set”, where I only see freaky little acorns, doing human stuff. Nice illustrations, but they’re faaaar away from being icons.

  47. 47

    Felicitari, Monica Corduneanu.

  48. 48

Wow, since when did smashing magazine comments become so hateful?

I remember it used to be all “thank you”s

Not so keen on these acorn thingys though…

  49. 49

Monica, I think these are adorable! I LOVE the little french acorn. I do have one thing to critique, and that’s just that I wish they had a bit more contrast in the forms. The value seems to be the same for each one and they look a smidge washed out.Otherwise, I love them :)

Good job…and ignore the flamers…just b/c they don’t have a use to everyone across the board, doesn’t mean someone won’t find them useful for maybe a kid’s website or handouts for teachers etc.

ps- might want to spell check the “motivation behind the design”, lots of words used in the incorrect context or spelled wrong.

  50. 50

    Very cute.
And ignore rude comments. People are just jealous.

  51. 51

    i want to know about

  52. 52

    April 28, 2009 11:27 pm

Monica tried, ok … but please, SM, try to filter the content to keep the reached level of your site. To be free isn’t a reason to publish whatever people send. I respect everibody’s work, but I think this icon set is not serious at all. Thanks for all.
