100 Free High Quality WordPress Themes: 2010 Edition

It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since our last WordPress theme collection, but there you have it — the time has come again. Once a year we feature the most useful and interesting WordPress-themes that we are collecting over months and present them in a nice quick overview. The collections from 2007, 2008 and 2009 are still useful, but some of the themes are outdated or updated now.

Looking back over these previous theme articles, you can clearly see how and why WordPress has rapidly matured into the CMS powerhouse it is today. With all of the features that have been added and improvements made with every new WordPress version and with its ever-increasing popularity among the design and development community, the quality of free themes is evident. Developers are continually pushing WordPress’ boundaries, giving us today’s outstanding free theme collection.

Today, we present a fresh collection of useful WordPress themes. Please notice that some themes are a bit older, but they are included because we haven’t featured them last time. This round-up picks up where we left off last year: most themes below were released between June 2009 and August 2010. I use Titan Free Theme =D

    Damn good theme

  2. 2

    Gotta love that Pre-Launch themes!

    • 3

There’s also a really nice free theme called “Irresistible” at, I’m using that one and found an awesome hosting company ( that installs and sets up WordPress for you when you setup your hosting account ~ Sweet!

  3. 4

You missed one of the most popular themes (by download) Suffusion. It is free and fully (really incredibly fully) configurable. I am nothing to do with the author but I use this theme on 10 sites and they all look completely different due to its flexibility. Have a look you won’t be disappointed.

    • 5

I use it too. I agree it is a great theme. However, the support in the forum from the owner and his cohort is rude and arrogant.

      • 6

please correct your statement. The developer is not arrogant at all, he is friendly, helpful and very patient.

The rude and arrogant cohorts = I think you mean me, as I am active in that forum and have a special humour sometimes, which is not appreciated by everybody.
        That’s life…

But please do not thow all persons in one bucket ;=)

      • 8

Suffusion rocks, and I’ve even had Sayontan (the developer) drop by my blog when I posted there about performance problems. If anyone gets rude, it’s probably towards users who post questions that have already been answered. I’ve found the support forums to be incredible, and have had to actually post a question there only once.

I agree. However, sometimes you just need to quickly find a nice free theme, install it and customize it a bit. Sometimes you just don’t have enough time to building a fully custom theme from scratch.

      • 21

Exactly. For instance, I have a friend who can’t pay me for a quick and simple site, but I’d like to help him out. Themes are the way to go. If I were building a site for a company, it would be a different story. Nice collection!

        • 22

I agree. More importantly not all clients can afford expensive prices for a bespoke theme. I know a lot of start ups and individuals who wants a blog or portfolio site up but doesn’t have the budget to afford me or other developers.

When working with big clients who can afford to pay or agencies then its a different story. But for the lower end market Themes are the way to go.

  10. 23

the quality of these free themes is pretty impressive!

  11. 24

    What about Drupal??

Excellent selection. For starter themes, I’d also recommend Ian Stewart’s HTML5 theme Toolbox:

I also recently released a free portfolio theme that uses custom post types:

Not feeling great about the $40 I just spent. I’ve left a comment on your site. Contact would be greatly appreciated.

  29. 53

Awesome job guys :) I found many new themes!!

  30. 54

You compiled, once again, a great list of wordpress themes! I really appreciate this collection and will play around with two or three of these. However, there is one little mistake I stumbled upon: The BEBACKWP demo (Pre-Launch WordPress Themes) is not properly linked!

Thanks again and keep up the good work!

  31. 55

WOW! My favourite post returns with a new editon. Brilliant!!!!

  32. 56

    Awesome Article!! :)

Did you know it shows up in the entire RSS feed? LOL
    Instead of just a snippet?

Yes, we know, Kris. This is the signature of Smashing Magazine, and we stay true to it.

  33. 58

when i started reading this i was the first one… and when i am writing this comment i saw comments count said 34 :) this is byfar my favorite post of SM , rock on

  34. 59

    oh, i love you!
    i really do.

  35. 60

Thanks for including The Erudite in this list! However, you could not have chosen a worse screenshot – the demo content for themes is terrible for my theme. If it all possible, please take a screenshot of instead. Thanks!

    perfect compilation. love it!

  39. 65

Nice collection! Thanks for the links.

  40. 66

    Great collections – thank you so much for sharing these themes! =}

  41. 67

    waw, nice themes ..
    I love wordpress

  42. 68

Wow another post full of wordpress themes, how original. Can’t find those on every 2 bit design blog or anything.

PS. Buy the book or we’ll shutdown.

  43. 69

Thank you so much! I especially love the last part of the post with blank themes. I needed to create a new core theme and I was kind of reading having to make one because of all that is needed, now this is one part of the process that won’t give me a headache!

  44. 70

Great collections – thank you so much for sharing these themes

  45. 71

oh no a classic if you dont step up now you misses the train image

  46. 72

You know you’re obsessed with WordPress when…

…for the last two days any time you’ve seen a themes roundup you’ve played “identify the theme from a distance” with your fiance and won.

  47. 73

    Really useful !

  48. 74

Wicked awesome – looks like Christmas came early this year! Sweet….

  49. 75

    Nice Collection!!!

  50. 76

Fantastic!! I’m something of a theme collector (themes are my new crack, complementing my overwhelming background tile collection – I kid! sort of…). Is there any hope of a zip file with all of them together?

  51. 77

fantastic, but unfortunately i’m not using wordpress.
    i’m use joomla

  52. 78

    Great Collection!!!!
please Anyone know the wp themes that can be used for online Music

  53. 79

Blissful Blog is nice.. but they charge $19.00 to get a FAQ for the design.. and even after paying the 19.00 I couldn’t get the lightbox to work.. and other lightbox plugins wont work with that theme chosen.

(works fine if you revert back to the wordpress default theme).

If someone figures out how to get it to work.. let me know.

    • 80

is a nice theme, but not totally free at all…

    • 81

The Lightbox Plus plugin works great with the Blissful Blog. The Blissful Blog theme itself is totally free. The $19 is optional if you would like the theme PSD and documentation.

  54. 82

Yeah!! Another creativity showcase, we need it because our own creativity is completely missing or somewhere down the drain pipe.

In most seriousness this is just sad. There are so many other ways to keep your audience. Showcases of free content are a waste of yours and ours time.

Take for example A list Apart, they aren’t publishing just for the sake of publishing. Publish a bit more rarely, but only high quality content.

    1. No designer will use someone else’s design for his own blog/site/journal/whatever…
    2. No client would want to share the same template with about …. 1000 others around the globe.
    3. Don’t you have professional writers around?

      August 19, 2010 10:51 pm

Martin, thank you for your reply. We have a quite large readership. There are readers who are interested in showcases and round-ups and there are readers who are interested in though-provoking design-related articles. Our goal is to provide useful content for the web design community, and this is exactly what we are doing. E.g. round-ups of freely available fonts are always useful, and in this case showcase of free content is not waste of yours and ours time.

If you don’t like this post, why don’t you just skip it? There are plenty of non-round-up-articles on Smashing Magazine as well!

      • 84

I am regular reader :) and the comment posted above is my personal opinion, it must not affect anyone, who likes this type of articles.

Also, I really do skip the showcases :) Just this time I was wondering about why they are so popular.

          August 20, 2010 1:01 am

You also need to keep in mind that not all readers are professional designers or developers, and will find these themes helpful for their own sites, or to simply tear apart and look at the code, which is in my opinion one of the very best ways of learning. :)

        • 86

“Also, I really do skip the showcases :) Just this time I was wondering about why they are so popular.”

          I mean, seriously…

          • 87

Yes, seriously – showcases of free design templates usually consist of nothing but sad examples how even a good idea can look bad. They are full of mistakes and have unfinished look.

Not to mention that they are limited to a home page and sometimes a second text only page (if we are talking strictly for sites).

    • 88

Yeah!! Another creativity showcase, we need it because our own creativity is completely missing or somewhere down the drain pipe.

In most seriousness this is just sad. There are so many other ways to keep your audience. Showcases of free content are a waste of yours and ours time.

Technically, according to you, everything you read here is a waste of time. Why are you so obsessed with wasting time?!

Take for example A list Apart, they aren’t publishing just for the sake of publishing. Publish a bit more rarely, but only high quality content.

Bah. Another side-liner. Do not comment just to comment! There are a readers who read more often and leave less comments but, the comments are meaningful!

      1. No designer will use someone else’s design for his own blog/site/journal/whatever…
      2. No client would want to share the same template with about …. 1000 others around the globe.
      3. Don’t you have professional writers around?

      1. Not all readers are designers.
      2. Not all readers are clients. Not all bloggers/website owners make money off their site. And not all of them mind sharing.
      3. Nah. Just good ones. :-)

      4. If you were a ‘regular reader’, you’d not have left a comment like this!

I am regular reader :) and the comment posted above is my personal opinion, it must not affect anyone, who likes this type of articles.

      Ooh! A disclaimer!? Lol!

      I have one too:
I’m not a regular commenter and this comment is my personal opinion (of a personal opinion of another commenter), it must not affect anyone, who likes leaving such comments!

      • 89

There was a time, not that long ago, that you could read very interesting articles here. Like there are some new entries that grabbed my attention. But as a reader I have the right to comment, approve/disapprove etc….

Technically, according to you, everything you read here is a waste of time. Why are you so obsessed with wasting time?!.

Not everything, just showcases like this one, I still think they are useless. Also, if this is the designers magazine …. wtf are the non-designers doing here?

Bah. Another side-liner. Do not comment just to comment! There are a readers who read more often and leave less comments but, the comments are meaningful!.

This comment is not for the sake of commenting. I am giving examples with the site with the most sophisticated articles regarding web design (in my opinion).

Also, Smashing are big boys, they do not need defenders :) they need to post high-quality content.

  55. 91

The Structure theme appears not to be free. Though its page talks at length about it being a free theme, there doesn’t appear to be a way to download it. The only link I can find is buried in the “about” section, and doesn’t work. Going directly to the Organic Designs website says it costs $69:

  56. 97

Really like the approach of shaken and stirred and imbalance themes have taken, good to see something different.

  62. 104

And the list is really awesome.

  68. 110

Great selection and great themes. Exactly what I was looking for now!

  69. 111

Great List.still you missed some awesome WP Themes

  70. 112

The “Ideal Website” theme is NOT free!

    • 113

I disagree. Any of these themes can be modified to become the ‘perfect theme’ for your project.

  71. 114

Nice list! Will be updating our gallery with some of the better ones listed here…

  72. 115

    Love Boldy.

  73. 116

You might want to note that kristarella’s mini is a thesis skin, and while it is free, thesis is not. Not that I have anything against any of that, and have learned a lot from kristarella (and thesis).

The pre-launch themes are great. I just might use one of them in the near future.

  74. 117

The interior pages of the Cumulus theme cause my FF to crash… every time. has any one else experienced this with that theme?

  75. 118

Seems to FolioGrid is good but after lots of try, thumnail is not display in wordpress latest version 3

  76. 119

    Confused, what to choose :)

Very nice collection indeed… i may have a suggestion for above list which might be a great addition to that. Last night i found this new news theme in my feed. you should totally check it out.

Also, whom should i contact for writing articles on SM.

  78. 121

just FYI but the theme on that the link in your article points to is the IA3 template and it’s not free ! it’s 30 $ or more ;) the theme is awesome for sure but not free.

    Otherwise great list !

    • 122

The first one isn’t free – true. But here they talk about a free template called “Free WordPress Template: The Ideal Website” – see point #2.

  79. 123

Nice work Paul, Thanks for sharing such awesome themes :)

Wow. A number of these are rip-offs of real sites. Maybe designers should start checking out the theme gardens with cease-and-desist papers ready.

  81. 125

    Awesome list of free themes!

  82. 126

The two themes I wanted for my blogs, autofocus and foliogrip does not work after downloading .. =(
But otherwise great selection. I suppose I can manage with just 98 to choose from!

    • 127

Hello, what problem have you encountered with FolioGrid? We’ve had several thousand downloads so far and not too many problems.

If you post on the site on this link, we should be able to help you out should you wish to use it:

The site and FolioGrid theme are undergoing massive changes in the next few weeks, so keep an eye out for improved versions :) Ticketing, support wiki and documentation for the themes.

      Take care,

  83. 128

Thanks to Smashing Magazine for featuring two of our themes, we appretiate it!

It seems that our mobile theme “iPhonsta” (featured as first mobile theme) is titled ‘WordPress Mobile Pack’, could you please fix this?

Thanks and keep up smashing work!

I was hoping for a “Business Theme” section! :/ Gutted.

  85. 130

I can not recommend the use of the monekypr theme. Although it looks cool, the html code that lies beneath is terrible. It uses tables and empty div’s with inline styled height to set up the layout.
The gyus form Retro Design Studio better look for someone else to write the code! :(

  86. 131

It’s the first time I heard about the Elastic Theme Editor, it’s incredible !

  89. 135

WordPress + WordPress themes … it’s like peanut butter and jelly. They work separately but together it’s MAGIC! Great list and thanks for sharing!

  90. 136

    the themes are awesome

  91. 137

A list of WordPress awesomeness! One of the best Smashing Magazine articles.

  92. 138

We need something like this but for Joomla, awsome resources.
    Thanks Samshing team!

  93. 139

I like the imbalance demo theme most on the list, the design is clean and minimalistic and shows off the art based site very well. The font for the header, and the minimal use of red complements the design well as it keeps to the simple theme.
Also the WPESP Theme in the portfolio section looks good, the colours work well together however i think that it could be improved if the navigation scrolled down with the rest of the page.

  94. 140

    Thank for sharing!

  95. 141

The best WP roundup of the season.

  96. 142

Thank you Smashingmagzine! I have enjoyed this site for years, and have learned so so so much! I noticed that BlueBubble is one of the 100 best free WordPress themes.

It was updated to version 3.0 the same time this article here was released.

    Thank you again, Smashingmagazine!

  97. 143

Thanks a lot for a great list, I’m going to be using several. LiveTwit took all of three minutes to get working on my site @ MMA.BS, and I’m looking forward to popping out a few other sites using these themes.

I so badly want to use the Foliogrid theme for my site, but every time I try to install it with WordPress, I get the following error. Can anyone help me with this at all? It would be soooo appreciated.

  101. 148

Newspress has a bunch of spammy links in its footer. :( Other than that, great compilation!

  102. 149

Ahhhh nice, I found a theme in here that will work better for my project than one I purchased, you saved me hours of frustration – thanks again Smashing!!!

  103. 150

More beautiful free wordpress themes can be found at with direct download link :D

  104. 151

    Nice collection !

  105. 152

Have these all been tested virus/spyware free?

  106. 153

Great collections. Few of them are really attractive. Thanks.

  107. 154

Nice list, I was searching for wordpress themes then I found your site…extremely useful..thanks for sharing it :)

  108. 155

Some of these themes i use on my WP sites, not all of them are that good as they look. And the service after install is with free themes mostly not there. Better buy a cheap premium wordpress theme WordPress Theme NL with full support.

  109. 156

In the “Pre-Launch WordPress Themes” section, for the “BEBACKWP” theme, you’ve linked the “demo” with the URL of the demo link for the “Ice Breaker” theme.

  110. 157

There’s no .psd file along with Lap of Luxury to edit the text/make it your own. Considering how many people have commented on their site saying something to that effect, there’s no solution offered.

  111. 158

Most of these are old and rehashed.

  112. 159

Have you missed this Free Premium WordPress Theme:

  116. 165

very cool :) i couldn’t find any I wanted to use but it’s a great list anyway!

  117. 166

The Satoshi theme from Vooshthemes is great, but i cannot access the Theme options menu under Appearance settings. When i click the link it does nothing. I’m running WordPress 3.0.1 on my local pc, using WAMP server.

  118. 167

Hi. The first theme – Cumulus – seems to be dropped by the developer. Please have a look into it and update appropriately.

    Time-saving list. Thank you

  119. 168

    very nice~! Thanks ^_^

  120. 169

Does anyone know of someone who has designed a nicer look for the Socrates theme? I like the concept, but the look isn’t my style. I’d like something more feminine that works with the Socrates theme. Any ideas/suggestions? Thank you, very much in advance! -Angel

      Hello Irwan,
thanks for letting us know. “The WhatsUp Theme” is no more available.Sorry!

  125. 175

  126. 176

I’m going to try and say this without sounding rude, however themes that have encrypted code in the footer or any other file do not and will never classify as “high quality” it is a practice that is frowned upon by a great many in the WordPress community and such themes are not allowed in the WordPress theme site.

  127. 177

That ‘s great post ! There are a lot of themes I like.

    Thanks for share !

  128. 178

Phenomenal collection of themes!! I never ever knew such designs actually existed. I have always wanted to use them and now this collection is providing it. With war of thoughts and options in mind it is difficult to choose just one…really! Thanks a lot! :)

  129. 179

However, it seems Cumulus has a premium version only. The links for the Cumulus theme do not work!

  132. 182

    How great!
    Thanks for sharing.

  133. 183

    I agree with your assumption.

  134. 184

I really LOVE these types of articles despite what Martin says. I am new to wordpress development so kinda going theme crazy. Really looking forward to January 2011 best themes. I have to point out like a few here that the #1 theme Cumulus is no longer available and Empire is a dead link. Also, some of the themes here do have security issues with static links and other oddities usually within the themes footer code I would sincerely appreciate that any future lists like this exclude those as best as possible because quite frankly I really like Smashing Magazine and would hate to stop reading or see your reputation tarnished as a result. Carry on the good work, I cannot wait to see more themes!

  135. 185

I’m not a web developer etc, just a person who’s been looking for nice looking themes, with adverts and other ‘necessary’ things as per the blog developer gurus. I think I’ve found a couple to try and upload. Thanks a lot Paul for having the info in one place.

hey awesome theme .great work. i have upload it to my website visite it

It seems that the creators of many of these themes have jacked up their prices after being put on this list. I suggest removing the following from this list:

    Ideal Website
    Structure Theme

  161. 211

Workaholic is also no longer free

  162. 212

    I’d suggest removing NewsPress from
It’s been updated to v2 which I downloaded. There are backlinks in the footer, which is fair enough for a free theme, however it wasn’t until I spent some time customizing it that I noticed the backlinks are to gambling, credit and herbal sites.

This is a pretty scummy move, it’s not disclosed until it’s too late really. As far as I’m concerned hidden base64_encoded PHP in the footer puts WPCrunchy far too much in the category of the dodgy themes that turn up in a Google search.

Maimpok is a Padd Solution theme and it contains backdoor and base64 decode like the rest of Padd Solution themes.

There are a lot of honest FREE theme providers, but either PaddSolutions are just as deluded as they say in the encoded codes (why give premium themes for free if you can’t put sponsors message), or someone is trying hard to smear honest provider of Free themes.

Can’t wait for the 2011 WordPress themes review. I’m guessing we’ll see many more mobile options.

I love Workaholic, Simplo and Clear. Great simple themes, great for writing some stuff with these themes. Today I finished my new theme “Two Sided”. In 2009 you have chosen the “Overstand” theme for your “100 quality wordpress themes” list. I would be very happy, if you could review the new “Two Sided” theme. Its´a mixture between a light magazine style and a classical blog style. I am curious if the theme could make it to the 2011 list. Nevertheless for all other readers who are interested in this new theme. Have a look at:

Have fun, keep on WordPressing and thank you for publishing great theme lists like this every year. It is really a pleasure.

Nice collection of themes. But I am wondering why bloggers do not use their own UNIQUE theme?

Even if it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that these public themes have it might be better to use something personalized. On my blog at I had someone design a unique theme for me at a very affordable price. Eventhough I agree that some free themes are much nicer than mine I wouldn’t sacrifice personality and uniqueness!

    Just my 2 cents…

    Great themes!

  181. 231

Great themes! They look so good, it’s hard to believe they’re free. But if you watch closely, some of them can be recreated in WP theme editors. They are based on a minimalistic layout and a good color and font pick. I use Lubith for example and it gives me this possibility. I will deffinitely take some of the themes provided here into consideration, the design is beautiful!

Can I simply say what a comfort to uncover someone that genuinely understands what they are talking about online. You actually know how to bring an issue to light and make it important. A lot more people really need to read this and understand this side of the story. I was surprised you aren’t more popular because you definitely have the gift.

  185. 235
