Desktop Wallpaper Calendar: October 2010

Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months. And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?

This post features 45 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.

Please notice:

  • all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
  • you can feature your work in our magazine1 by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?

So what wallpapers have we received for October 2010?

  3. 3

Ah, awesome collection! I’m really confused which to use first. :D
My favorite designs are all of Olivia Bell’s, Sasha Bell’s love in autumn, Kristin G Jackson’s Jump into Fall, Anna-Lena Lewerenz’s The Colours of Octobers, and Violeta Dabija’s Halloween. Keep it up, guys! :)

  4. 4

They are all amazing this month !

  5. 5

Hi, I come here to get my monthly desktop, regularly! And I always find something I love! But, this month, I’m not so sure… :( Do all October desktop backgrounds have to be about Halloween?! Here in India, we don’t celebrate Halloween all that much. In fact, almost no one does!! And all I can find is one very dank and dreary picture of Gandhi… the message on it is nice, but not what I was looking for. Something bright, even something related to autumn…but bright….would have been nice…anyway, I guess I’ll just have to wait till next month to see something I like.

Keep up the good work at smashing magazine, guys! I really mean that…just feeling a little let down this time around.

Actually, many wallpapers are not related to Halloween at all, especially the ones on the top of the page.

    • 14

Dear, I don’t think you have any idea about creativity. Prove me wrong and let’s see if you can create something like expectation for next month.

      • 15

        hai this is good

        • 16

My above comment is not for Vitaly but for Jane Hamilton. Sorry if you guys misinterpreted it.

I think there is only half of the wallpapers about Halloween. Mine (Above The Clouds) is quite bright I think, and no ghost or witch in it, just a cute giraffe :).
Is Smashing Magazine famous in India?

      • 19

        Nice work :-)

I like ur colors n style of work n make it my wall this month…Thanx

I am not much happy this month..:(

  9. 21

Thanks for featured my “Any Browser”! Love you, guys! :D

    • 22

Do you allow using the “any-browser-but-latest-version”-picture cut-out and re-sized and used as an icon on websites?

  10. 23

    My Favorites For October:

1- As always “Oliva Bell” photographs are astonishing ! (will be my desktop background)
2- Montona Moon – Excellent Job
3- I really liked that Caterpillar Scraper !

      • 26

Marisso & lillo is gr8. I luv de creativity (Peice of water melon – de skirt). Waitin for more walls frm u.

    • 27

That’s the one I chose. Maybe sometime this month I’ll say those words.

  12. 28

Above The Clouds is my wallpaper for October :)
    Nice one again guys.

  13. 30

Thanks a million for including “Pumpkin Spice Spookster,” my submission! My favorites are “The Colours of October” and definitely “Eerie October.”

  14. 32

Rocktober yeah, way cool – thanks

  15. 33

    16th place

  16. 34

    Hey, great collection!
I think it would be cool if you could subscribe to “Smashing Calendar Channel” via Google homepage, so it would change automatically at the beginning of the month, maybe every artist would have his own channel or something.
    Just a thought

  17. 35

Not going to lie, the last couple months I have been bummer because it seemed the selection was not amazing, but October has come through. Great job this month guys!

  18. 36

Great collection :) My favorites are
    1. Mahatma Gandhi
    2. purple fall
    3. This month rocks
    4. The words i’ve never said

Great work by all the designers…

  19. 38

Wow, love the 3d October Calendar wallpaper most. Got to your site via Twitter by accident, but it wasn’t the last time I’ve visited your great site, thanx

  20. 39

    excellent collection. as always!

  21. 40

I love Olivia Bell photography and Sasha Bell drawings.

  22. 42

Any Browser FTW! – If only more people would listen to, and obey, its sentiment.

  23. 43

Love Olivia’s Hibernating designs, obviously got a foot fetish this month. Also love Montana Moon and Heavy Equipment = powerful photographs!

  24. 44

Very low level this time d0des :/
I really don’t understand Hibernating 1 and Hibernating 2. There is nothing creative. Just regural photos.

  25. 45

Thank you for the great wallpapers. My favourite is Any Browser, though others are good as well. What about urging designers to create wallpapers for netbooks as well? 1024×600 for instance. That would be great.

Great selection as always. Bummed my calender wasn’t featured but will send one in till it is featured!!

  27. 47

Does anyone know where I can find a tutorial to create a calendar, with days showing in one line, at the bottom of the image (like, for example, on The Colours of October)?

    Thanks in advance,
    José Castro

  28. 49

Another great collection Smashing. Thanks for the share Vitaly!

  29. 50

Thank you so much for featuring my work at the very tippy top of your page! :)

The other designers were also very creative this month and I can’t pick a favorite!

  30. 51

Why does “Hibernating” scare me a little… (dead body?) Maybe that’s a good thing considering it’s the month of October? A picture of just feet in black and white screams Morge. All you need is a tag on the toe… I hope I don’t offend the designer. Good concept though.

  31. 52

Olivia Bell’s wallpaper is amazing thumbs up for a brilliant design!

  32. 53

    Hi everyone!!!

I really like every wallpaper so I don’t know which one to use in first place!!!

Anyway, I specially loved ‘The words I’ve never said’ and ‘Love in Autumn’.

    Thank you so much!!!

    Best regards,

    Paula – Colombia

  33. 56

Why is there a full-page Scion ad in the background behind the post when I click the back button? It’s kind of obnoxious. Anyway, nice wallpapers.

  34. 57

Only the Pumpkin Spice Spookster wallpaper is available in 1600×900, but that’s not the one I wanted. Oh well.

  35. 58

Nice selection, although I’m curious about the guidelines. I submitted for October and it’s not posted here. Just curious – I spent a lot of time selecting and preparing all the different sizes, etc. I’m not motivated to do all that again…

  36. 59

I like most “Childish” – this is a cool message and:
“The words I’ve never said to you” – I like the photo and the possibility to think about never said words

  37. 60

Hey Smashing Mag, thanks so much for posting my wallpaper! And great work by all the other designers as well.

  38. 61

While all of these come from clearly talented artists, I’m getting kind of tired of the toddler-centric art work. How about something more adult focused. I will often apply these wallpapers to work computers and if half my choices are kiddie art, I’m left searching elsewhere.

  39. 62
  40. 63

All wonderful, as always … but my favorite this month is Violeta Dabija’s Halloween. It’s beautiful and truly “haunting” … with such glowing, jewel-like colors. Lovely and just a little spooky.
