New Year, New Book: Smashing Book 2 Is Coming: Pre-Order Now!

Update:(26.01.2011) The pre-order phase is over. The book is now available at full price1.

Update: (30.01.2011) If you are planning to write an article or review of Smashing Book 2, please feel free to use the Smashing Book 2 Media Kit (.zip, 7 Mb). The kit contains images, illustrations and photos that you might find useful for your article. Thank you for your time and your efforts, guys!

What’s the best way to start a new year? Not just with resolutions and good intentions, but with good deeds! Therefore, today we have the pleasure of announcing that a new Smashing Book is on its way. And not only that: it’s not just a book but an annual event.

Smashing Book 2, Pre-Order Now, $23.90 or €19,102

Is the book really coming? In all honesty, the Smashing Book 1 could have been better in several ways: the overly long shipping times and poor quality of the binding were critical mistakes we made with that first book. But we did our homework and learned from our mistakes. We wanted to make the Smashing Book 2 better than its predecessor in every respect: the hardcover book will cost $29.90 USD (like the first one), but it will have more pages and much better binding and will be more comprehensive and of higher quality.

As you read this, the Smashing Book 2 is already in the final stage of production: printing started in late December. This means we will start shipping the books by February at the latest, and the pre-order period will be much shorter than the one with Smashing Book 1. You can pre-order your copy today3 and get a huge discount: 20% off the regular price.

What’s In The Book? Link

Like its predecessor, the Smashing Book 2 is a printed book about best practices in modern Web design. This book shares valuable practical insight into design, usability and coding. It provides professional advice for designing mobile applications and building successful e-commerce websites, and it explains common coding mistakes and how to avoid them.

You’ll explore the principles of professional design thinking and graphic design and learn how to apply psychology and game theory to create engaging user experiences. We also feature interviews from experts on the future of Web typography and describe how you can publish a book on your own.

Well-respected professionals have worked with us to provide exciting and comprehensive chapters:

  • “The Principles of Great Graphic Design,” Matt Ward and Alexander Charchar,
  • Visible vs. Invisible Design54,” Francisco Inchauste,
  • “Designing Mobile User Experiences,” Mike Rundle,
  • “Sketching, Wireframing and Prototyping,” Janko Jovanovic,
  • “Red Flags in Web Development,” Christian Heilmann,
  • “The Future of Web Typography,” Vivien Anayian,
  • “Game Design Techniques Applied to UX Design,” Christoph Kolb,
  • “When They Click: Psychology of Web Design,” Susan Weinschenk,
  • “Design Patterns on E-Commerce Websites (A Study),” Steven Bradley,
  • “How to Make a Book (Like This One),” The Smashing Magazine Team.

You will find more information below, and you can read a sample chapter — “Visible vs. Invisible Design54” (PDF, 5.6 MB) by Francisco Inchauste — for free.

Exclusive Artwork for the Book Link

The Smashing Book 2 features exclusive full-page illustrations for each chapter. And here we’ve got something special for you. The illustrations were created by the talented Australian illustrator and our dear friend Yiying Lu, who is well known as the designer of Twitter’s famous “Fail Whale6.” She has designed an exclusive new series called “Smashing Animals” for this book, and (by the way) you can purchase it as wall art on Yiying’s website.

Yiying lovingly cares for her cat on the wall. You can see this illustration in the chapter “Visible vs. Invisible Design,” written by Francisco Inchauste.

Names of Our Readers in the Book Link

In November 2010, our readers and fans had the opportunity to add their names to the book7. We sorted all of the participants alphabetically and created an exclusive double-page feature on pages 6 and 7. Overall, 2970 names form the “S” in Smashing — ASCII art at its best.

The Smashing Book 2 Is Available Only In The Smashing Shop… And Nowhere Else Link

The Smashing Book 2 will be a hardcover book with quality stitched binding, 360 pages and a bit larger of a size than its predecessor. The price is again just $29.90, but there is more. We want to make the book affordable to everyone, so Smashing Magazine will pay a large part of the shipping costs and ship the books at a fixed price of $3.50/€3.50 per copy, no matter where you live in the world.

And it gets even better: books will be sent only via air mail (except within Germany). The delivery will take between 3 and 15 working days at most (you can check delivery times for your country8). The books will be shipped from Berlin, Germany. And of course, if you are not satisfied or have questions, there is a 100-day money-back guarantee and a live chat in our recently redesigned Smashing Shop.

But That’s Not All, Right? Link

Right! Initially, the book was supposed to contain more chapters, but because most of our contributors delivered (much) more content than the book’s size could accommodate, we couldn’t include them all. (We could have added more pages, but then shipping costs would have increased significantly.) So, we will release four chapters as a free bonus eBook, called “The Lost Files.” This eBook will be available in PDF, ePUB and Mobipocket formats. In February, every registered customer will be able to download the book, even if they haven’t bought the Smashing Book 2. So, make sure to check out the Smashing Shop in February.

Here are the pieces that will be presented in the free bonus eBook:

  • “The Ultimate Web Design Questionnaire and Checklist,” Kat Neville,
  • “Plagues in Web Design and How to Deal With Them,” Speider Schneider,
  • “Interviews: Expert Tips From Renowned Designers,” Steven Snell,
  • “Web Design Community: Where Are We Going?,” Paul Scrivens (Drawar).

Features Of The Book Link

If you pre-order the Smashing Book 2 now, you will get a huge discount: 20% off the regular price. You’ll pay just $23.90 USD and will get:

A Closer Look At The Book’s Chapters Link

The Principles of Good Graphic Design, Matt Ward and Alexander Charchar
This chapter looks at some key concepts of graphic design as they relate to modern Web design. It looks at a number of the central elements and methodologies that drive the act of designing itself, and it discusses the sometimes subtle but always significant divide between the merely good and truly great.

This chapter is about: The meaning of graphic design. The difference between good and great design. Timeless design. Relational minimalism. Importance of contrast, space and tension. Typography. Visual voice.

Chapter 1: The Principles of Good Graphic Design

Visible vs. Invisible Design, Francisco Inchauste
Basic principles and techniques of producing the visible layer of design in tools such as Photoshop are widely covered in books and online. Design is generally understood to be only what we see: a visual and primarily artistic medium of communication. However, the invisible part of design takes on several forms. When we design a website or application, we don’t (and shouldn’t) start from scratch. We start with certain patterns, and we need to understand their limitations in order to create effective solutions and experiences. Balancing invisible and visible designs enables us to create effective and meaningful interfaces for websites and applications.

This chapter is about: Seeing the invisible in design. Designing how users think. Mental models. Excise design. Design patterns and interface guidelines.

Chapter 2: Visible vs. Invisible Design

Designing Mobile User Experiences, Mike Rundle
The best apps work well, but building an app that looks good and works well isn’t easy. Designing a mobile app’s user experience is particularly challenging because it requires skill in a variety of disciplines: interaction design, graphic design, information architecture and ergonomics, to name a few. User experience design is a combination of disciplines, and so designing a fantastic mobile app calls for a combination of perspectives and skills.

This chapter is about: Building and selling apps. Peculiarities of mobile software. Principles of good app design. User interface design patterns for mobile apps. Visual design of mobile apps.

Chapter 3: Designing Mobile User Experiences

Sketching, Wireframing and Prototyping, Janko Jovanovic
Every design process starts with an idea. Many ideas, actually. The truth is, only a few of them prove to be good, and the others are just bad. Many people believe that they have an excellent idea and know the path to realizing it, yet most fail. And that’s not surprising, because having an idea is not enough. Knowing how to choose an idea, shape it and develop it is crucial to success. This chapter describes the process of moving from abstract ideas to concrete solutions and explains the workflow, tools and techniques available when designing websites and user interfaces.

This chapter is about: Design process. Ideation through sketching. Storyboards. Techniques and tools. Wireframing. Prototyping. Testing and refining.

Chapter 4: Sketching, Wireframing and Prototyping

Red Flags (Warning Signs) in Web Development, Christian Heilmann
We spend a big part of our lives working hard to clean up and maintain products, rather than building great things to make the lives of our users easier. That’s just the way it is. If your code is hard to clean up, then you’ll be eating up even more time in the already short development process. Discovering that the product you’re having trouble extending or fixing is your own from some time ago is all the more aggravating. That’s when you start thinking that something must have gone wrong along the way. Well, something has. A few things will make good solutions go bad and start to smell, and this chapter goes over them.

This chapter is about: Building for maintenance, not the moment. Why HTML and CSS code go bad. HTML painting and convoluted CSS syntax. Issues with JavaScript and back-end code.

Chapter 5: Red Flags (Warning Signs) in Web Development

The Future of Web Typography, Vivien Anayian
In the foreword to The Elements of Typographic Style, Robert Bringhurst points out that the underlying principles of typography are independent of any particular typesetting medium. Yet it is only after almost 20 painful years of setting type on the Web that designers can finally breathe better and apply the essential elements of style without compromising on detail or execution. Recent years have been pivotal in shaping the future of typography on the Web; what was unthinkable only a few years ago has become possible today, and it will get even better tomorrow.

This chapter is about: Evolution of Web typography. @font-face. WOFF. The open-source type movement. Font licensing. Web font services. Current problems in Web typography. Fonts Module and CSS3. Exclusive interviews.

Chapter 6: The Future of Web Typography

Applying Game Design Principles to User Experience Design, Christoph Kolb
The ultimate goal of a business is simple: to engage as many people as possible in favorable interactions. These interactions could include buying a product, spreading the word, advertising or just generally becoming a fan. Such objectives clearly require us to explore paradigms and perspectives that go far beyond aesthetics and traditional user interaction. This is where game design theory comes in handy. We can apply game design to certain areas of interaction to create user experiences that engage people and bind them to the company. In this chapter, we will learn how to apply some of techniques and theory of game design to website design, user experience and business.

This chapter is about: Combining social psychology, game design theory and economics. Game mechanics: world, players and rules. Winning strategies for users and companies. Playbook and strategy for interaction designers. Game design techniques and real-life examples.

Chapter 7: Applying Game Design Principles to User Experience Design

When They Click: Psychology of Web Design and User Behavior, Susan Weinschenk
From the chapter: “I’m a psychologist by training and education. This means that I consider design in the context of the mental model of the user. Whether the design is of software, a website, a medical device, online instructions or product packaging, I can’t help but see it from a psychologist’s point of view. I enjoy applying what psychology research tells us about how people think, learn, play and work to design challenges. I take research and insight into the brain, the visual system, memory and motivation and extrapolate design principles from them.”

This chapter is about: Different views on design. The importance of social interactions. Unconscious decision-making. Social validation. Goal-gradient effect. Using distractions to grab attention. “Satisficing.” Mental models. Error handling. Inattentional blindness.

Chapter 8: When They Click: Psychology of Web Design and User Behavior

Design Patterns in E-Commerce Websites (Study), Steven Bradley
Designers of e-commerce websites have to take into account many things that designers of informational websites don’t. How to design the check-out process? How will the website establish trust so that visitors are willing to hand over sensitive credit card data? Common design patterns have evolved over time, and this chapter explores how well e-commerce websites match up with theory and best practices. What’s the average number of check-out pages for an e-commerce website? Do certain patterns emerge from the data to show how different websites approach such issues? Shopping websites were chosen and surveyed each based on a set of elements in several categories.

This chapter is about: Layout. Information architecture. Navigation. Color. Product, check-out and shopping cart pages. Wording and design of call-to-action buttons. Contact and support pages. On-site marketing.

Chapter 9: Design Patterns in e-Commerce Websites (Study)

How to Make a Book (Like This One), The Smashing Editorial Team
Holding your very own book in your hands for the first time is a truly remarkable experience. You suddenly realize that you’ve given your ideas — ideas conceived in some abstract state in your mind — a certain shape, a physical reality, making them tangible, visible and enduring. The feeling is overwhelming: it fills your heart with pride, in the way that a painter admires their creation. The feeling has not been alien to those who have participated in book manufacturing over the centuries, and yet experiencing it has never been so affordable and accessible as it is now.

This chapter is about: Printing a book on your own or with a publishing house. Writing, editing and preparing the book for printing. Pricing, marketing and fulfillment. eBook production: PDF, ePUB, Mobipocket. Print on demand.

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers related to Smashing Book 2.

Contents and Format of SM Book 2 Link

  • What’s the difference between Smashing Books 1 and 2?
Both books cover best practices in Web design and Web development, and they have similarities, but on a broad scale they cover different areas of design. Book 1 presents coding and layout techniques, color theory und UI design, while Book 2 covers psychology, designing for mobile devices, graphic design, wireframing and book production. They complement each other very well but are also distinct enough for standalone reading.
  • Is Smashing Book 2 an update, a new edition or a completely new book?
The content was written from scratch, specifically for the book. It’s a completely new book.
  • Is Smashing Book 2 available as eBook?
No. We don’t want it to be just one of the many books available everywhere, but rather be an exclusive annual event. Our goal was to print a large, unique, comprehensive and extremely valuable physical book. We don’t have any plans to release it as an eBook yet.
  • What’s with the extra eBook (the “Lost Files”)?
Initially, the book was supposed to contain more chapters, but because most of our contributors delivered (much) more content than the book could accommodate, we couldn’t include them all in the book. (We could have added more pages, but then shipping costs would have increased significantly.) Therefore, we will release four chapters as a free bonus eBook called “The Lost Files.” The eBook will be available in PDF, ePUB and Mobipocket formats. In February, every registered customer will be able to download the book, even if they haven’t bought the Smashing Book 2. So, make sure to check out the Smashing Shop in February.
  • Will the book be available in other languages?
    Not yet.

Don’t worry, this time there won’t be such delays. We learned from our mistakes. We have taken plenty precaution to make sure that everything sticks to the schedule. For example, different than last time, printing has already begun and the transport to our warehouse involves no ships. :)

But of course you’re welcome to wait until the books are on stock. Then you’ll miss the discount, though.

  4. 5

The first book was such an inspiration, I’m not worried about the second! It can only get better! :-) Keep up the great work!!

  8. 10

Preordered, definitely. Very lovely chapter illustrations. Good thing that the binding will be better this time («quality stitched binding»), volume one was a bit too stiff in the back.
Great to start 2011 with this posting, thanks a lot guys !!

    Hey guys,

    I wanted to preorder, but I can’t.

Just a small tip: before stating you ship anywhere in the world, please check you country list in the check-out form.

I’m in Romania and our country isn’t there (and how ironic is that, we’re also members of the EU…)

Not cool, not cool at all…

    January 5, 2011 6:30 am

    Hey Cosmin,

when we say anywhere, we do mean anywhere. We definitely do ship to Romania.

We suspect that our system has accidentally recognized you as an non-EU-customer. Is it possible that you are currently seeing prices in Dollar? You should see them in Euro. If this is the case, try using the “Force Shop View” dropdown at the very bottom of each page. There you can select Romania as you country of origin and then it should be possible to select Romania during the checkout process.

Sorry for the confusion – and of course thanks a lot for your interest in our book!

  13. 19

I’ve pre-ordered 1st one and never received it.
CS told me that it’s returned to them and asked me about correct address.
Book haven’t arrived to this address too.
What can I say? No more Smashing Books…

      January 5, 2011 7:13 am

      Dear Denis,

you won’t find this information for free. The chapters are written exclusively for the book and as you probably have noticed in the chapters overview, the book is written by experts who know exactly what they are writing about. Give the book a try — you won’t regret it.

    • 24

I received the book and i’m in the Philippines, though it took a few months before getting a hold of it :)

Anyway, it’s inspiring and I’d love to have the next one too even if I haven’t finished reading :)

    • 25

This site is still great! maybe the novelty of it being new kid on the block has faded a little but it’s still fresh. The last book was awesome and I will be ordering the new one today. The new format looks great.

Don’t worry guys, you haven’t ‘lost it’ in my humble opinion :)

  15. 26

  18. 30

love your honesty and your good work.

  19. 31

I’m really surprised you are holding on to releasing this as a print only book. You may want to re-evaluate that. Sure 10 years ago a printed book had more value because of the quality of the “binding” and the paper, but now it’s about the quality of the information. You may want to take some tips from your online colleagues at They are selling ebooks at your price point and doing well. With all of the readers and tablets available, your position is a little dated.

I really do like your articles and the value of your information. I hope you change your mid and offer the ebook version. I would pay the full price!

I’m based in the UK and wondered if I can pay in $?

Current exchange rate $1.516 and €1.142 euros.

Also, given the shipping rates is it actually cheaper for you to ship it to the USA than the UK because for me to pay for shipping in € is more expensive that paying for shipping to RoW in $.

    • 39

      Smashing Media Customer Support

      January 5, 2011 8:13 am

Sorry, but Europeans can only pay in Euros.

The exchange rate was different when we originally set the prices. Since the book is being produced in Europe, Europeans are paying a fair price. With the current exchange rate, Non-Europeans are a bit lucky, but that might change any day depending on the development of Euro/Dollar rates.

  23. 40

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to purchase the new book or not, so I downloaded the free chapter on Visible vs Invisibile design to see if it would be worth my money.

    It exceeded my expectations.

For about a year now I have been coming to smashing because it is so professional and ahead of the curve (if not making the curve!). I wouldn’t be the refined designer I am today had I not found you. And this book takes those ideas (many of which I had never thought about before), polishes them up, and presents them in an easy to understand, detailed, and friendly exposition.

Thank you smashing. You guys are amazing.

I will def be purchasing the book as soon as I can.

I will preorder the book today, the price in comparison to similar books is very good but on the other hands paying with euros is making the book more expensive. It seems that people from europe have to pay more for the same book.

I realize you guys need to pay the bills with book sales, but when will we be seeing more inspiration posts, tuts and something similar? Finding alot less design/dev here than I used to.

  30. 52

The best way to start the new year off right is to post some articles. 5 days in and this is the first thing you post?

  31. 54

    Hey guys,

First off, I’m a huge Smashing Magazine fan, and loved the first book!

The first Smashing Magazine book looks so polished, crisp, and professional, and I was wondering if there were any tips or tricks that could be shared.. Or even ideas on what software is best for formatting and designing the pages of an E-book?

I’m publishing my first fitness E-book, and would love to give the same outstanding impression to my readers as the Smashing Magazine book gave to me!

    Thank you!

    • 55

@Brenda The art is in the artist not the software. That being said, I use Adobe InDesign for page layout. It’s pretty much the best. Hush Quark! If the price tag is too much look at things like Scribus (it’s free). Oh, don’t get an ebook creator or any of that fast get it done crap. Oh and get a good graphic artist.

      Dear Brenda,

It’s probably an excellent topic for an article; we are using Adobe InDesign and Apple Pages and it actually works very well. Actually, InDesign is very powerful, so you probably will be able to get everything done with it.

Thanks for your kind words, and enjoy the reading of the SM Book!

  32. 57

Shouldn’t I get a copy for free? It would look really good on my desk.

There, I’ve cleaned a spot for it. You have to send one over.

  33. 58

Can we have a Kindle version?

Not currently, sorry. Our goal was to print a large, unique, comprehensive and extremely valuable physical book. We don’t have any plans to release it as an eBook yet.

  34. 61

Bought it! And the first one. Which for some reason I didn’t have yet.

  35. 62

I bought the book but didn’t register, will I still receive the digital book?

I did my part! – Preordered the book just a few minutes ago. I live in Honduras, so I hope I’m not one of those lamenting not getting the book shipped. But the preview chapter I read, I loved. Hope this makes me a better designer as well as a better business maker.

Thanks a lot for ordering! :) No, we won’t be shipping both books together. Smashing Book #1 will be shipped immediately and Smashing Book #2 as soon as it is on stock at the beginning of February.

  40. 72

    Hey guys !

I’m wondering about the “printing your own book” part. Is this a part dedicated to beginners? Because I’m specialized in publishing, and interested in learning new stuffs everyday in this area, but if it’s just lessons for beginners, I think I won’t buy the book.

    Thanks in advance !

      January 6, 2011 11:44 am

Good question: it depends on what you are looking for. Admittedly, the chapter isn’t going in the tiniest details and covers preparation, editing, layout, pricing, marketing and the details of the printing process — mostly things we encountered during the production of the book. If you are an advanced print expert, you probably will not find many new stuff there. Sorry.

I assume you are referrring to the delays during thr pre-sale last time? We’re still very sorry about that. :( Please be assured that we learned from our mistakes. This time, we started the pre-sale much later in the production process. The books are already being printed and they are being printed closer to our warehouse, so that there won’t be delays during the transport to our warehouse.

  43. 79

Pre-ordered the book as soon as I received the email. 23E that were spent well.

The first book thought me how to be a graphic designer and more importantly how to design well. Because of that I went from “meh!” to getting customers coming back for more.

    Thank you,

  44. 80

    Hi guyes,

When I try to order, it asks me to fill-in the state/region from Germany although I filled-in a different country in the drop down list before.

We suspect that our system has accidentally recognized you as an non-EU-customer. Is it possible that you are currently seeing prices in Dollar? You should see them in Euro. If this is the case, try using the “Force Shop View” dropdown at the very bottom of each page. There you can select your country of origin and afterwards it should be possible to select your country during the checkout process.

  54. 96

Is it a problem if I want it to ship directly to Mexico? last time I got it to the US but now I’m not living there, however I’m unsure if you guys are shipping it also down here (usually not a lot of stuff gets mailed here or it takes forever :( to reach me)

We do ship to Mexico. All shipments are sent via airmail, so it should not take too long, but we have no data on the delivery times to Mexico, so unfortunately I can’t give you a real estimate.

PRE-ORDERED , Regarding e-Book “Lost Files” When is your plan to make it available to download for registered users ?

Apart from its content/topics, I really love the illustration work for every chapter

I saw the shipping time for my country ( Pakistan ) which is around 5 to 9 days, quite nominal. Thanks Smashing for continuing great efforts.

Sweet!. I just pre-ordered my copy.

  60. 107

I…am….so…PUMPED! JUST Pre-Ordered my book this week, ordered the Smashing Book #1 last week, and a few eBooks, I’m getting totally Smashing Magazine pimped out and I LOVE IT…thank GOD I switched my degree to Web Design & Development, this stuff is too much fun…LOTS to learn, but still crazy fun!

  61. 108

Unless it can fit in my iPad, I have no intention to buy it. Get over the piracy fear, you will get your money.

  62. 109

I have just ordered this book and I have also read the sample chapter. I find it quite ironic that the sample chapter states that you should not ask people for information to be entered more than once when not required yet I have to enter my name and address details before I get to select PayPal as the payment method.

One of the advantages of paying by PayPal (and one of the conditions of use on websites) is that you should not require customers to enter their name and address details if I choose to pay with PayPal as, once I have made payment, PayPal will give you the details. By all means show this to me to verify after I have made payment but please don’t ask me to enter it when you can get it all from PayPal directly.

You are not alone in this however as many companies do this even though they should not / there is no need.

Anyway, just a pet hate of mine! Looking forward to the book.

  63. 110

Pre-ordered and really looking forward to it, especially the section based around mobile design, this is set to be a huge trend in 2011 and there are few people doing it very well.
I’m a big supporter of printing a hard cover version. Despite doing the majority of my reading on the train with my tablet, there is something about having a hard cover that is special, exclusive and important. Its not just another file on your hard drive, but something that people can ‘ooh’ and ‘ah’ over.

As always Smashing Mag is leading the curve, well done guys, keep up the amazing work.
