Upcoming Conferences and Events for Designers and Developers in 2011

We’re well into 2011, and many designers and developers around the world are planning their travels for the year, including the possibility of attending any Web design or development conferences. To help you out with your plans for the upcoming months, we’ve put together a list of conferences and events that you might want to consider.

This particular post covers events taking place in about a six month timeframe that ends in late August and early September. Later this year, we’ll post another article like this at the end of August that will cover events covering a six-month period beginning in September.

As always, there is no way for us to be able to include every possible event here, but we’ll be glad to update the list if you provide a comment to an upcoming event that you feel would be of interest to Smashing Magazine’s readers. This may also be the chance to eventually meet each other1 this year.

Solid list. Looking forward to quite a few of them.

If I could humbly suggest you add Breaking Development in Dallas on April 10 and 11th to the list. It’s another solid event for anyone interested in design or development for the mobile web with a great speaker lineup and catered meals – http://breakingdc.com

What an awesome list. I’m new to the Interaction Design field and these conferences would be a great help. So many to choose from. Thanks. I’m going to SXSW for sure. Already got my ticket.

Thanks for a great list, wish I could attend more conferences over the year but this year i will be going to SXSW, really looking forward to it. Then it will be Frontend2011.com in October for me here in Norway.

Waiting until august to post about conferences in September? Would be more helpful to post that article much sooner…

    0
    • 16

But where do we draw the line? If we post in July to announce August+, then that makes the August events short notice. If we post in June to announce July+, then that makes the July events short notice…. and so on… It’s impossible to have posts like this without excluding someone. Since the events usually start to pick up in the spring and fall, I think February and August posts are probably the best option.

I suggest those who want to stay more up to date and have plenty of time to plan should check out Lanyrd (http://lanyrd.com).

      • 17

You overlap the posts of course! You cover Feb-Aug in Feb. Then in June, you cover July – end of the year.

        1
        • 18

Yes, I considered that solution, but then we run the risk of looking biased because we list certain events more than once.

But I’ll think about that for the next one, thanks for the suggestion.

There’s a WordCamp in Miami on March 5th – probably too late to add to the list, but nice if you live in the area or need to get away from the cold/snow. Mark Jaquith and Andrew Nacin confirmed (2 Core WordPress developers) along with other core developers and speakers from various parts of the country. Was a sold out event last year.

The Eyeo Festival will be massive, sold out in 5 days, and should really be on this list:

This list mainly covers conferences in the Americas and Europe.

If your in the Middle East around late March, there’s ArabNet Shift 2011 covering the developments of the region http://arabnet.me/

It should be noted that Google I/O is already sold out, so it might not be best to have it on this list (or at least have something there saying that it’s sold out).

Great start. Thanks for everyone filling in the ones that were missed. Maybe this would be better suited as a living document that everyone can contribute to?

“New Castle” should actually be “Newcastle upon Tyne”. Just sayin…

If you want to be even more accurate, you shouldn’t mention Newcastle at all. The Sage is in Gateshead (and was paid for by their council): a separate town altogether.

Or, you could go the council sanctioned route and call it (the vaguely embarrassing) NewcastleGateshead which covers the whole region.

Either way, having missed out last year, I’m hoping to go!

Thanks for this list Smashing. It would be great to get to SXSW, but I’ll probably go to a couple of events in Europe instead. I attended Frontend2010, and will attend Frontend2011 for sure (not on the list).
