Smashing Cartoons: June 2011

We all have our favorite client stories, embarrassing design flaws and never-ending user requests which are all just a part of what we, as designers and developers, encounter very often in our daily work routine. In this new post series on Smashing Magazine, we’d like to put some of these situations into the spotlight and discuss them with you. The cartoons are all dedicated to Web design and also have a comic twist about everything happening around the Web and latest trends.

The main character of the cartoons is Fleaty, a talented, hard-working designer with big ambitions yet not that much luck when it comes to clients. Hopefully, Fleaty will put a smile on your face and maybe remind all of us of the flaws we have, and help us finally get rid of them. The creative mind behind the Smashing Cartoons is our talented illustrator Ricardo Gimenes1.

We’ll be adding a new cartoon every week; the latest cartoon is presented on the Smashing Magazine’s sidebar as well as on the Smashing Cartoons2 page. There you will also find all previous issues of the Smashing Cartoons series for your convenience.

Hilarious and bang-on as always! the 1st joke on old browsers is bloody brilliant!

    Keep em coming!

The “Mobile First” one reminded me of when I was freelancing and received a lot of client requests. The clients’ marketing departments hear terms like “social media,” “mobile,” and “SEO,” and they decide that want all of those things immediately implemented without even realizing what they are asking for. Thankfully I’m having a better experience now that I’m working at a company with more of a typical agency structure.

These are not funny. Real, maybe. Funny, no.

  7. 7

the oatmeal has it dialed.. this was not too funny.. no offense

  8. 8

I generally love SM but these cartoons are really uninteresting and not funny at all…

    The illustrations are nice

If Google will make all users download/upgrade IE browsers a lot of old school designers will die (me), but user experiences on web will be wonderful!

Glad I’m not the first person to be the bad guy, but these are face-palmingly bad. This is the kinda stuff I’d forgive in a middle school textbook, maybe.

  15. 15

SM should stop making cartoons XD…

  16. 16

Everybody says these cartoons are not funny. Yes & no… they are meant to remind you of a time when it happened to you. Then you laugh.

    I like them.

Also, if Google made users upgrade it would be awesome but then everyone would use Google Chrome. I hate Chrome -_-

Mobile First is the story of my life… EVERYDAY! UGH!
    Thanks for the giggle.

  18. 18

These are just awful and an unnecessary use of SM resources when websites like Clients From Hell are already doing stuff like this and far better executed.

SM should stick to what they do very well, which is giving us great tutorials and articles.

  19. 19

Agreed, These cartoons are terrible, the illustrations themselves are great, but they are not funny or witty and the majority are largely pointless. Focus your energy on the blog this is a dead end.

A friendly reality check from your blog fans.

i like the third one ” they just don’t care” because that was happened with me.
