    Hey guys,

I always bought your books, but this time $70 is too much for me. I am really sure they’re worth the price, but this is not my best period. I wish you the best and I hope I can buy them later on the year!!

    • 2

The price will also keep me from buying this. 70 dollars? Yikes. Maybe the eBook files for 10-15$, but not more than that.

        Hi Daniele and Tiia,

Please note that the Smashing Book #4 will consist of 16 chapters, i.e. 2 books in a slipcase. If you’d only like to have the eBooks, then you can subscribe to the Smashing Library where you can download the Smashing Book #4 eBooks as soon as they’re published.

Thank you for your support and understanding! :-)

        • 4

30 dollars for E-books? *sputters tea*

Just saying that it will be out of the reach of a lot of students (and there are a lot of cheapskates, but still..). Think they will stick to downloading it off The Pirate Bay.

          • 5

In all honesty, it’s only $15 a book coming from a place that is well deserving of it. The economy may be rough but this is an investment in your career. Take it seriously, learn, grow, improve and the $15 will easily make it back to you! Keep it up The Smashing Team!

Will you guys be including the names who pre-order the book in a special page like you did in the Book #3? :)

      Hi Victor,

No, this time we’ve thought of something even better — stay tuned! ;-)

  3. 10

Waau…books look really smashing. Bet they’re worth the money. Unfortunately, still too much for me. Maybe in future. Great work anyway!

Isn’t it possible to (pre-)order only the ebooks #4?

  5. 13

Price is a bit steep, and looking through the chapters you guys don’t really provide anything new. Most of this stuff has been covered over and over again since book #3 went out.

Also with book number 4 you guys should have had chosen more advanced in depth topics. On Creativity, Inspiration And Getting Started is not really that. Most of your readers are advanced and keep coming back to you guys for that content.

Another thing thing is the fact that you are pushing us 2 books. What if I’m only interested in design or just Coding? And $70 c’mon…

      Dear Adrian,

Well, here is the thing. The new book is different, and it will be more advanced, and more challenging. As we mentioned in the post, with the new book, we’d like to challenge you to look beyond what’s done usually, which is why the working title for the new book is “New Perspectives”. We’d like it to be a very forward-thinking, eye-opening book with innovative concepts and ideas being presented, discussed and developed further.

Tim Kadlec and Brad Frost have been writing about performance budgets (aka “Performance First”). The guys behind TypeForm reinvented the way Web forms look and work like. Marko Drugonjic used Camera API and face recognition to change the font-size and contrast of type depending on how far away a user is from the screen. I’ve been in touch a couple of guys from a university near our headquarters who are developing a strategy and tools for designing richer multi-screen experiences for TVs, phones, tablets and desktops. Oliver Reichenstein applied the concept of responsive design to native apps.

Tim Brown has been talking about Universal Typography that would adjust and work across the various screens beyond traditional media queries. Christian Heilmann has been talking about Vanilla Web Diet for Web apps. Addy Osmani and Paul Irish have developed a set of robust tools that can significantly boost a developer’s workflow but haven’t been adopted quite yet. But also internal processes — be it customer support, team management or personal workflow — are changing yet again.

The books will push the existing boundaries quite aggressively and provide you with new insights and a visionary perspective about your work and our design processes.

And yes, we will make a standalone eBook available of course, but we also want to orchestrate a beautiful, memorable experience that would shine through every single page as you gently flip it in your hands.

For $70 you will get two hardcover books in a beautiful, unique slipcase plus eBook versions of both books (shipping costs included!). We strongly believe that the price justifies the quality content and design that you will get for this price, Adrian.

        Thanks for your reply, Vitaly.

After reading what you’ve said, about the topics you will cover, you got my interest:) Pre-ordered :)

        Hi Vitaly,
Could you please inform us that when the Standalone books would be coming (Printed as well as eBook).

  6. 17

I have bought all of your hardcopy books and I liked them a lot. I can’t wait to get my hands on #4.
    When does the shipping start?

Thanks Klevis — the books will be released in September/October. We’ll start the shipping the very moment when the books become available!

I have recently bought all three of the old ones, and I have just finished the 1st chapter of Smashing Book #3. What I love about these books is that they don’t go too deep into the technical details, but give you more of an overview of what skills you could need to improve.

Most of all, these books challenge the norm and make me think in new ways, which affects me everytime I sit down to code a website. Nice work. Thank you!

  8. 21

Will #4 be available as part of the yearly library subscription?

    • 22

Vitaly Friedman (editor-in-chief of Smashing Magazine)

      April 23, 2013 7:00 pm

Yes, absolutely! But only the eBooks, not the printed version.

  9. 23

I kept reading your note as includes slipspace instead of slipcase, I was like what sort of technology will Smashing come out with next :P

May I ask when these ship?

  10. 28

Fresh food for our brains! Just for the after summer vacations… :) Thanks! Pre-ordered my copies.

  12. 30

What are the goodies that we’ll get if we pre-order? No offer on “Mobile Book + Smashing Book #4” purchase?

    • 31

Vitaly Friedman (editor-in-chief of Smashing Magazine)

      April 24, 2013 12:10 am

Well, as mentioned in the post, for $299.00, you’ll get a printed and digital copy of Smashing Book #4, an annual subscription to the Smashing Library, a Smashing t-shirt, a Smashing laptop bag, and your very own Smashing-style caricature, created by our illustrator Ricardo Gimenes.

And no, so far we don’t have an offer on Mobile Book + Smashing Book #4. Sorry.

Is it free shipping only for USA? Or can the book be delivered to other countries?

    • 33

Smashing Magazine is based in Germany not US, either way it is free shipping for everyone.

  14. 34

Could we just have the e-books? And could it be more affordably priced?

    • 35

Vitaly Friedman (editor-in-chief of Smashing Magazine)

      April 24, 2013 12:04 pm

Yes! The eBook option has been added to the overview.

  15. 36

I haven’t even finished reading all of Addy’s books and he has written another. The guy writes masterfully. The design patterns book is incredibly useful and once his Backbone book goes to print it will be in instant classic!

I devoured the first 3.5 books and the mobile book is a masterpiece. keep up the good work and creating relationships with the leading authors and creators. they do not get enough recognition imo.

Both printed books and eBooks will be released in September/October (as explained in the article). In fact, the chapters are being written this very moment. So please be patient and stay tuned!

Thanks for the fast reply. I just thought that the ebooks were out already.

      • 42

preordered but whaaaaaaat, do I really have to wait so long. :-)
I can’t await getting them in my hands. I already feeling the nice printed hardcover in my hands and seeing me sitting at my desk reading, reading and enjoying… Keep up the great work!!!

    I don’t buy a Printversion.

Yesterday there was one version that had the printed books and the smashing library (20% off). Is this offer still available somewhere? I was interested in buying that.
