Since seven years, our monthly desktop wallpapers post is a Smashing favorite that wouldn’t be possible without the tireless efforts of designers and artists from across the globe. Each month, we challenge you, the design community, to get your creative juices flowing and produce some interesting and inspiring desktop wallpapers. And well, we are very thankful to everyone who tickles their creativity and contributes to this challenge every month.

This post features artwork for December 2015. The wallpapers all come in versions with and without a calendar and can be downloaded for free. Now it’s up to you to decide: which one will deck your desktop this month?

Please note that:

  • All images can be clicked on and lead to the preview of the wallpaper,
  • You can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our Desktop Wallpaper Calendars series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?

Christmas Invaders

“While December brings darkness outside, we spend a lot of time inside. We take the time to celebrate Christmas in the company of our loved ones, but sometimes we might enjoy the simple joys of playing a computer game. Space Invaders has to be one of the most iconic classic arcade games, so to honour its legacy this wallpaper shows what a Christmas themed Space Invaders game might look like, so, therefore: Christmas Invaders!” — Designed by Wim Verpoorten from Belgium.

“What better way is there to bring in the festive season with an Isaac Newton-themed wallpaper? For geeks and science lovers especially.” — Designed by Passion Digital from the UK.

Miles To Go Before I Sleep

“I always love to think about the New Year and the new opportunities that we look forward to in the new year. I am always used to all the festive, holiday types of wallpaper, but I always think this is a great time for reflection, so I decided to create a wallpaper after many years of wanting to do this. So I thought to find a nice reflective wallpaper off of Unsplash and just figure out a way to express this aesthetically.” — Designed by Chanelle Henry from Philadelphia, PA.

I Wish You A Very Red Christmas!

We can see it in the neon lights in the street, in the Christmas papers that we use to wrap our presents, in our hearts, for instance. Everywhere! So I decided to wish everyone a very red Christmas. Peace!” — Designed by Jorge Cruz from Portugal.

This Month In A Galaxy Much Like Ours

“The 16th of December marks the return of one of my favorite movie franchises, Star Wars, which inspired me to create this wallpaper. I used the 16th because that’s when the movie first starts showing for the public in a few European countries, one of which is my home country, Belgium. Two days later it will appear in theaters across the USA.” — Designed by Kobe Vervoort from Belgium.

On an iPhone you need only ‘click’ (tap) on the resolution you need .. this is generally a vertical picture, with the first number (width) less than the height, such as 380×240 or similar

      1
      • 3

Bad example .. 320×480 makes more sense

Bad example .. 320×480 makes more sense .. MORE IMPORTANT: For us iPhone users, please consider that the time and date are always displayed on the top of the start screen, please, if possible: a few options with the calendar at the BOTTOM of the vertical image .. Thanx!

As every year goes by, new desktop colorful wallpaper calendars are designed at the end of each year in December. It is for the beginning of the new year with fresh hopes, determination, happiness, prosperity, well being and blessings for everyone.

Wow! There are so many great papers this month. I save a bunch for work but what makes me even happier is that there are a bunch of 1366×768 ones that I can use for home too! Special thanks to Alex Hermans, Chiara Faes, Marina Etuci, Stijn Van Doorslaer, Imagine Forest, Jordan Thoma, Ana Filipa Travassos, Maria Keller, Rachel Sulek, and Passion Digital.

I love the Newtonmas design – just the festive celebration that us unbelievers have been longing for!

I do love these. However, designers, although the ‘days of the month in a line along the bottom’ may look cool and allow for more creativity and space for the design, as a calendar it’s dysfunctional because of the difficulty of quickly finding ‘two weeks from’ or ‘how many weeks/days until.’ Especially in December! Similarly, having the calendar on the left interferes with desktop icons. So I chose the eggnog, even though it wasn’t quite my favorite! (Holly is always my favorite because it’s my child’s name.)

Be careful, the winter solstice is the “longest” night of the year, and the shortest day…

I loved these monthly calendars. For December I picked It’s “What’s Inside That Counts”.

One recommendation… I love using these to update my Facebook cover; any chance you can recommend that the design is presented on that size? (I imagine some people would love it for other social networks too).
