Freebie: Olympics Sports Icon Set (45 Icons, EPS, PDF, PNG, SVG)

This year, there will be 42 different sports and over 300 events taking place at the Olympics. Perhaps you have a project related to these upcoming games, or maybe you’ll be working on a project which is somehow related? Wouldn’t it be great to have a set of consistent icons for all sports-related activities, just in case? Well, that’s just what we thought.

This set of 45 icons was created by the design team at Icons81. Please note that this icon set is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported. You may modify the size, color or shape of the icons. No attribution is required, however, reselling of bundles or individual pictograms is not cool. Please provide credits to the creators and link to the article in which this freebie was released if you would like to spread the word in blog posts or anywhere else.

Insights From The Designers Link

“The Olympic games are scheduled to start on the 5th of August and we’re making sure you’re prepared. No matter what country you are supporting this summer, we have icons to represent your favorite sports.

Our design team is very sporty themselves; one is a former soccer player and another one is a professional powerlifter, so they had a lot of fun creating these icons for you. Use them on your website or application, or just send them to a friend — it’s on us!”

A big thank you to Icons8 — we sincerely appreciate your time and efforts. Keep up the brilliant work!

Thank you for sharing these beautiful icons!

These icons are great, however you might have the IOC on your back about usage of the Olympic rings –

From working on a few projects around London 2012 a few businesses got in trouble for using logos and even the word “Olympic” –

Hi Stephen, thank you for the precaution.
We don’t make any profit of it, other than spreading the word about sports in the design community. I’m not triggering ICA, but them going after us about the symbol that is used more often than some finger gestures… Would make a great story to tell friends!

Yes, but providing these assets without that kind of disclaimer can get others into trouble. What if others just used these icons in their product under the assumption “the icons are free, so we’re okay to use them” — but in actuality are breaking copyright law and could be on the fence for a lot of money.

This is an irresponsible icon set.

You’re right, thank you for the heads-up. We’ve sadly removed the rings… ;-(

Thank you for the pointer, Stephen K.! The rings have been removed from the icon set now.

That’s ok. Saw some designers get in hot water in London and didn’t want the same to happen to you guys.
The IOC have some quite nuts conditions for host nations, which include adding laws around trademarks beyond normal IP and copyrights, typically to allow only the official sponsors or media partners to be able to use the marks and phrases.

Hi! Thanks for sharing. Where I can find the mentioned CC Atributtion license in the original work? Or it’s just mentioned here?
    Thanks :)

To me, it seems SVG icons are missing some features to really overcome font icons.. With your technique we are able to change the color, same as icon fonts, nothing else? No way to animate, or to change only a custom svg path?
The only pro I can see is that this way we keep a visual connection between the original images (the svg itself) and the spritesheet. It is not just some crazy binary file format that translate into icons..
Too much trouble, you can download this free svg icon.

Thanks for the awesome share :)
