Product Designer

  • Vancouver, BC
  • full-time

We’re a laid back group of people working hard on a vision of the future where financial independence is achievable by all. Bookkeeping is a universal point of pain for passionate entrepreneurs pursuing their dreams. They want to run their businesses, not do accounting, so we make it disappear through services and software that give people control over their financial lives. While bookkeeping may not be the most glamorous subject matter, we genuinely believe that solving fundamental small business problems is anything but bland.

Bench is post Series B, capitalized by a team of Silicon Valley and New York investors. We’re scaling fast and we’re not slowing down anytime soon. In just a few short years, we’ve grown from four co-founders to over 275 Benchmates. It’s been quite the ride so far and we’re looking for the brightest minds who love solving tough problems to join us on this incredible leg of our journey.

This is a unique opportunity to design the next generation of software that powers our internal bookkeeping team. You will make product decisions. And conduct direct user research. And forge relationships with many other departments. It’s a tall order, but you will grow immensely and do the best work of your life.

Here are some of the things you’ll be responsible for:

  • Leading research and testing efforts directly with our internal bookkeeping team (that’s right here in the building with us!) to drive product decisions and iteration.

  • Prototyping new features and refining existing interfaces within the product.

  • Working closely with the product manager and engineers on your team to see features through from sketches to functioning software.

  • Embedding with our accounting and bookkeeping teams to learn about their daily challenges, create solutions for those, and communicate throughout rollout.

The essential stuff:

  • A rock solid foundation in UX and interaction design methodologies.

  • Proficiency in working within and contributing to an established design system.

  • A team player attitude, along with everything that implies: reliability, willingness to give and receive constructive criticism, and the active pursuit of feedback to improve your work.

  • A proven ability to decipher signal from noise when faced with conflicting inputs.

  • Impeccable communication skills, both verbal and in writing, and a belief that writing is interface design.

  • Willingness (enthusiasm, even) to immerse yourself in accounting and bookkeeping practices and deeply understand our internal bookkeeping team’s workflows.

  • A demonstrated ability to see beyond the task at hand and understand how your work impacts a larger system.

  • Experience collaborating with engineering and product to ship software.

The nice-to-haves:

  • Comfort with prototyping in the browser, digging through a codebase, and making your own tweaks and modifications.

  • Familiarity with recent methods and thinking in product design, such as microinteractions and jobs-to-be-done theory.

  • Ability to enliven an interface through meaningful animation.

  • Experience, education, or an interest in quantitative UX and data-informed design.

Other details and benefits:

  • This is a full-time position, because we want to spend lots of time with your wonderful self.

  • This position offers an annual salary based on experience.

  • We offer an extended benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, massage, and a Wellness Fund.

  • Our downtown office is close to lots of great restaurants and easily accessible via transit.

  • Our team regularly cycles between in-office and remote work depending on the kind of projects we’re working on.
